    Stopping biting

So today, my wife is sitting at home when she see's a stranger in our back yard . . . well, it turns out that this is a cable company employee who is connecting service at our new neighbor's house and needs access to the pole which is in our yard.  So any way, there's a guy up on a ladder and one on the ground (my wife can not see the man on the ladder).  She tells the guy on the ground that she needs to let the dog out, and he says fine . . . she then hears from up in the ar "NO NO NO!!!  Don't let him out!!!  I hate dogs!"  My wife and the guy on the ground both laugh . . . they tell him that a.) the dog is a 4 month old puppy, and b.) remind him that he's up on a LADDER.  So the dog comes out, and the guy on the ground just loves winston, he has several dogs of his own.  They are playing and the dog's having a good time.  Well, the play progresses and winston starts biting (not aggressive biting, but typical puppy biting).  The guy says "ah ah ahhh!" and sticks his thumb in winstons mouth . . . . winston stops biting very quickly.  My wife asks the guy what he did, and he told her that if you slip your thumb underneath the dogs tounge, they will stop biting.  You don't apply pressure, but just place your thumb there witht the rest of your fingers under the jaw.  It works like a charm!  The first thing the dog does it open its mouth and tries to push your thumb out with its tounge . . . in doing she he can't bite.

Anyone have any thoughts on this or done this?

This is what I tried to prevent Joey from play biting.  Didn't work.  What did work was no attention until you sit and be good.

By the way, where do you live?  My father in law is a cable sales man and is terrified of dogs.

Nope, not my father in laws territory.  Just wondering.
