Pet Store - What can I do?

Pet Store - What can I do?

There is a pet store in my town that I pass by frequently.  I finally got the nerve to go in the other day.

They sell purebred puppies and kittens including several designer breeds like the Puggle.  There were at least 30 puppies in there.  There was a section of “tea cup” puppies including a pug, poodle, chi, bichon, among others.

Most of the cages had NO water in them.

I played “ignorant consumer” so I could ask questions.
I was told they get their puppies from over 40 different breeders throughout the US.  She could get me ANY breed I wanted within a week.
Nobody wants a dog older than 6 months so older dogs get “marked down” until they sell.

What was most upsetting was 2 pitbull puppies who had just had their ears cropped.  It looked as if someone took a scissors and cut their ears off.  They were WAY too short and look mutilated.  When I commented about it, the lady said, and I quote, “Yea, I agree they cut them to short but I think the lady who did it was in a rush.”
    WHAT???!!!!

She said that she feels bad for them so she puts a towel in the crate every night.  Wow, that is mighty big of her.  What about the other 30 puppies who have to sleep on a cold, hard grate?

My county#%92s SPCA has an animal cruelty division which investigates cruelty complaints.  I called them and reported everything I observed.

What else can I do?  I am so angry I can#%92t see straight.

Sounds to me like you did what you could. I mean I wouldn't get a puppy for feeling bad because then your still helping the puppy mills. So calling them was the right thing. good work and if the puppies looked to be in bad conditions then I hope the SPCA can help. =)

With no disrespect intended, there is MUCH more you can do, there is much more all of us can do.

Unfortunately, activism has lost its meaning.  Today, when we think of an activist or demonstrator, we think of GreenPeace, or PETA.  While these organizations grew out of a grass roots idealogy based on social reform, they have become (in many cases) caricatures of the very methods they employ, and sadly, have lost their way and their effect (don't even get me started on Ingrid...)

Getting back to your post though, if you really are as angry as you note, then get two pieces of 4X4 cardboard, string them together (a la sandwich board), get a thick black magic marker, and come up with a few clever words to express your dismay (e.g. "Save a dog, or refill a cage. Your choice.".  Stand on public property near the store, and walk around.  You don't have to say or do anything else.  I promise you that every single person who intends to walk into that store will have your sign on their mind.  I further guarantee that you will deter more than half of all potential puppy buyers that day strictly because they are too uncomfortable walking by you.

Instant results.  If the owner asks you to move along, simply pretend he doesn't exist (do not argue or spout obscenities).  If he threatens you, pick up your cell phone and call the cops.  If he calls first, wait for the police to show up, say hello, and go home peacefully.  Come back another day.

Feeling ambitious?  Gather a group of friends and some hot chocolate (or soda) and make a day of it.

Is the store in a mall?  Have a shirt made up with your slogan and walk around in the store.  Go look at the puppies.  Don't bother the customers, just walk around and make sad faces at the puppies.  When you get approached, speak another language and shrug your shoulders.  Security shows up?  Leave peacefully.

Now go home and relax in the comfort that you are DOING something to save those puppies!

Again, I don't mean to pick on the OP.  Just answering the question.  I've been to my share of demos, and hugged enough trees to know that activism gets attention.  Unfortunately, it seems as though attention is the last thing we want nowadays.

    Good luck. [;)]

At the least go on your local craigs list and tell your neighbors what is going on because they likely shop there too. Make a flyer and post it in the immediate area of the store.
If they are being mostreated, ie without water or medical treatment you CAN call AC

I don't know.  I am not sure you can do that on private property, and usually a pet store is on private property. I may be wrong but if you do go there with a sign and they ask you to leave, you darn well better leave. I don't think calling the cops will get you anything but in trouble. That is what happened here in my city where a Pet Supply Plus was/IS selling puppy mill pups.

I'm glad you called SPCA, it was a good start.    Perhaps you can write a letter to the editor in your local newspaper.  For sure spreading the word about the fact that they are being mistreated would get some attention.  Do you have a local TV station,,,that had a known animal lover on it...in our city it is a very famous weather man...he is always talking pets.   Talking to anyone that will listen...especially pet owners.

Dyan, have you emailed Pet Supplies Plus corporate office? I had problems with one of their stores.. nothing like puppy mills or anything, but within 24 hours of my email the owner of the store I had been to called me at home and did everything in his power to make things right.

Pet Supplies Plus also followed up to be sure the franchise owner had followed through on my complaints. At least in my case, they took it very seriously. Even forked over $100 gift certificate to replace the fish I lost when bringing one of their disease fish home.

OH MY GOSH....let me retract that,,,,,,,,,I am so sorry and am sorry to Pet Supply Plus,,,they do NOT deal with puppy mills... I meant PET LAND!

Thanks to all who replied!  To clarify, I would NEVER buy a puppy from them.
Yes, I do feel bad but I will not support them in any way.

They are not located in the mall, they are a free standing store.  One of my friends is a Dog trainer and when I told her she mentioned getting a group together to protest.
I will also post on Craigs list.  Great idea.  I have not yet heard back from an Officer for the SPCA so I am going to call again today.

Just because something is against the law doesn't mean you shouldn't do it. Not returning slaves to their masters was once against the law too.

Here's what I'd do. Make a 1/4 page front-and-back leaflet on the horrors of puppy mills (include pictures!) and the connection they have to pet stores. Go to the parking lot, and leaflet the cars. Go back an hour later and leaflet again. And again. And again. It might not be legal if that's private property, but you're not hurting anyone or damaging any property. I say that's definately a morally acceptable thing to do and I've thought about doing the same thing with the Pet Land near me.

For sure one thing is true..if we don't break the laws about puppy mills they will NEVER stop!!!
    • Gold Top Dog
Yay Samantha!!!  I guarantee your protest will get results.

Just to clarify, as I said in my original post, stay on public property. There are usually very specific laws as to where you may or may not demonstrate, and depending on the mood of the officers that day, you may end up 'downtown', and that sucks (trust me).

Either way, you have my congratulations for taking it a step further. [sm=clapping%20hands%20smiley.gif][sm=clapping%20hands%20smiley.gif]

Pet Supply Plus was/IS selling puppy mill pups.

    rs.

Can't be a Pet Supples "Plus."  I used to work for one less than 1 1/2 years ago and it is in their contract that they in no way support the sale of puppies in a store.  They cannot even recommend a  pet store that sells puppies.  I love Pet Supplies "Plus," I'm darn sure that they cannot sell puppies within that franchise.  Are you sure it wasn't a Pet Land.

Edited portion: Sorry, I didnt read the rest of the posts after I saw this one.  I was just shocked by your statement.

    Pet Land[:@][:@][:@]  Worst place ever.

You know, my company distributes products to Pet Land, so ocassionaly I have to go in and talk to their managers, which by the way change like dirty underwear.  Apparently, it's hard to work at a torture house.

Another thing I noticed about their employees, they are usually thugs.  The last time I stopped by, a man was beating a girl over her head and pulling her hair inside a car in the Pet Land parking log.  I told the Pet Land manager right away that there was a man beating a woman in their parking lot and she said, "Oh, the guy's one of our employees.  I'll send another employee out to see what's going on."  What?![:o]  How about call the police.  They are just all around inhumane.

And to think that the AKC had nearly joined up with Petland.

It takes a certain type to work at a place like that.
