Neutering and the male perspective

Well, gee -- so, if you leave your dog intact you get to CHOOSE what kind of cancer?  Whatta thot.

And you are assuming that you will KNOW about the cancer quickly enough to "hack those off" before it metastasizes?  Shoot -- I wonder if the medical community knows about that -- does the same hold true for prostate cancer?

    Gee, what an intelligent thread..

Don't try and make out my post like that.  Maybe people didn't read into it like I thought they would.  Studies have shown (and I will get links) that hermangio and osteosarcoma has shown up MORE in neutered males that intact.  I'm going to stack the odds in my favor.  Who knows, maybe my dog will get some sort of cancer anyway, I'd hope he wouldn't, but when there are studies out there saying neutered animals end up with more "bodily" cancers than unaltered, it concerns me.

Poor Ranger went through hell after his neuter, which is another reason I'm not such a fan of neutering anymore either.

Responding to the OP...I've noticed that some men do have an issue with testicles. Personally when I finally neutered my last Akita I had at age 5, many moons ago (he failed OFA) my DH was quite glad as he put it "his b*lls were bigger than mine anyhow...haha!"

I think the three main issues with people who don't neuter...

Macho attitude: this can be women or men really...people who really believe their dogs need testosterone and visible dangling testicles in order to suit the owners expectations of behavior or appearance. Often this group is fine with the far more invasive and dangerous op of spaying a female dog. Very telling.

Peer pressure restistors: people who simply would refuse to do anything simply because "society" tells them it is the way things should be, and invent supporting criteria accordingly. Usually they strive to have as many opposing views on commonly discussed subjects as possible. Usually their criteria is something to the effect of "you wuoldn't understand because I'm way deeper than you on so many levels"...

Religious objectors: I believe we discussed this before that Judaism does not support the spaying or neutering of pets. There may be other religions that have similar rules...

rw, you crack me up...you can't imagine that someone who has a different opinion than yourself could possibly have a rational reasoning behind it...it's got to be because of some immature macho or rebellious tendency, or listening to some supernatural command.

I think you broke that down quite nicely Gina. The majority of people I personally know have neutered dogs. Based on conversations, they weighed the pros and the cons of an intact dog and the cons outweighed the pros. I only know a few people with intact dogs. There are only 3 reasons why they have intact dogs. 1 being that the dogs are being shown in conformation and they have to be intact. 2 being for medical reasons that prevent the dog from having a surgical procedure. 3 being because of stupid reasons based on machismo. Speaking of machismo, my cousin acts that way. It was quite hilarious though. He had an intact Pit Bull and refused to neuter it. So his wife took the dog in and had him neutered. She said she was tired of the dog marking in the house and acting like a fruit cake and when my cousin found out what she did, she told him if he so much as opens his trap to bitch about it, she'll take him in and have him neutered too. [:D]

    rwbeagle: Macho attitude

meilani: because of stupid reasons based on machismo

ok, as long as this type of generalization seems to be allowed here, i'll try one too... the main reason many women are comfortable with neutering their male dogs...is because they hate men...but they can't take out their frustrations out on the men...so they do it to their male dog.

of course, this opinion will be attacked...but for some reason, when a female makes an equally sexist and stupid generalization about men, it doesn't seem to faze anyone.

Faramir, do you even know what the definition of "machismo" is? In case you don't, here it is...

ma‧chis‧mo/mɑˈtʃizmoʊ, -ˈtʃɪz-, mə-/ Pronunciation Key - Show Spelled Pronunciation[mah-cheez-moh, -chiz-, muh-] Pronunciation Key - Show IPA Pronunciation

    –noun

    1.
a strong or exaggerated sense of manliness; an assumptive attitude that virility, courage, strength, and entitlement to dominate are attributes or concomitants of masculinity.

    2.
a strong or exaggerated sense of power or the right to dominate: The military campaign was an exercise in national machismo.

[Origin: 1945–50, American < Sp see [linkhttp://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=macho]macho[/link], [linkhttp://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=-ism]-ism[/link]]  And where did you get I was making a sexist generalization towards men? Not in my post because I know that I didn't say anything about all men acting machismo unless you are taking the anecdote regarding my cousin as a sexist generalization towards all men. I don't get why you're all bent out of shape but then again, if the shoe fits... By the way, I also own a spayed bitch. Guess I must hate women too, right? [8|]

fisher:  And whenever they talk about how "tough" or "scary" or "dominant" their dog is, I get him on his belly and give him a good rub and coo in a very high-pitched squeal about how "tough and dominant the baby is".

who gets the belly rub...the guy or the dog?

I think all who were trying to understand why some men perfer not to neuter would appreciate this thread to be kept on track.  There is no need to criticize the opinions of other people.  Try to be open minded and learn.
