    Dog Backpack

Has anyone gotten their dog a backpack?  Living in the city, I used to pack a sort of "doggie diaper bag" with plastic bags, treats, toys, housekeys, etc when we'd go for a long walk or to the park.  Now Bette has a backpack for all her stuff and she seems to walk better on the leash having something to concentrate on (other than traffic and squirrles.)  Has anyone had other experiences?

    Maddi wears one hiking...

I can't say that it's affected her ability to chase squirrels, chippers, and other things though.  Zoomies go uninhibited as well.

My brother has one for his red heeler and it's great for hiking and that kind of stuff.  He loads it with gear and she looks like a little tank ready to go on a long jorney.

My dog on the otherhahd does not need any more weight added to her body, she has hip problems that can't aford that kind of pressure.  I can't really take her for long hikes anyway because of that.

Wings used one with her service dog patch on it rater than a cape (so she could carry her own poop bags and training stuff :P)- I really like the ones made by Weneha (I have the Jogger model) and Kelty better than the 'Otward Hound One' brnd ones- they'er MUCH better made.

We have two! We have one HUGE Outward Hound one that is supposedly for overnight hikes, which we never do. We primarily have it as part of our emergency evacuation strategy (dogs come with, carry their own stuff). The one I use most often is made by Wolfpacks and it is their "saddle bag", and I use it several times a week. It's a good size for city day trips and acts as, yes, the "doggy diaper bag" with all their various things in it (and I'll admit, I make them carry my wallet and keys and my cell phone, which is funny when my dog starts ringing). It's also really highly adjustable and is a very simple design. Both dogs can wear it with adjustment (95 lbs and 55 lbs) and it doesn't have a bunch of straps and snaps and clasps and things. Just one velcro strap. Easy on, easy off. If you weight it even remotely evenly, it doesn't slide around.

I think you can only get these suckers online from Wolf Packs directly, and it ain't cheap, but I've just been pleased as punch with ours. We previously got a similar-looking one from PetCo and it was a piece of crap and broke before we even got out of the car for our first trip to the park with it.

This brand was recommended to me by people who have service dogs as the pack they use when their dogs need to carry items for them. I love it.  Here's a picture (poor quality, taken with a camera phone) of Marlowe sporting it quite stylishly.

Yes, good packs are well worth the money, IMO.

I payed $90 for Maddi's (RuffWear Palisades II) and I've never regreted it. I only regret not trying a small on her... it may have fit a tad better. I know these packs seem popular at the store I work for.

I have one for Tasha and yes, she acts much better on leash when she has it on.  However, if she gets to go off-leash, it needs to come off because she'll go swimming with it on no problems.  ;)  But it has velcro to hold the pack and the basic strap piece can stay on.

We got one for Prudence because she is 5 years younger than JJ and has twice the energy!  When we use it we put a 16 oz water bottle in each side as "weight" so that she gets a little more warn out.  We don't use it too often right now, but as JJ gets older and can walk less I know it will be a godsend.[;)]

Tank has one.  I must have deleted the pictures off my PC.  He loves his.  I think it makes him feel special because the other dogs don't have one.  It seems to draw more attention to him when he has it on.  People seem so fascinated by it.    He is a young strong dog and it really helped to train him on the leash better.

We got one for Bugsy and he loves to wear it and I also think he is more focused while wearing it on walks.  he's too young to load it up yet but we put poop bags in it and I bulk it up with empty 1 liter bottles so he gets used to the extra width.  We walk our neighborhood daily so almost everyone knows him and me (or my husband) and we get lots of laughs and queries about it.  Bugsy is a big energetic pup/dog (14mos) and even those that drive by us know slowing him down is the object [:D]
Ours is by Outdoor Products and the Large is supposed to be for dogs 70-100 lbs.  Bugsy is a lean 95+ and it is HUGE on him.  But it is a great pack

Laddie Bear wears a backpack when we are hiking. I bought it at Petsmart about 5 years ago. Can't remember what I paid, but it wasn't terribly expensive. It does not keep him from running. The only thing he carries is water and collapsible bowl. I carry first aid as I don't want him diving into lakes while carrying important cargo. The type I bought for Laddie has the pack that is held on by Velcro. It is nice if you want to remove the pack without unstrapping and removing the entire thing.  Oh the pack is by Outward Bound.

I wonder if they make backpacks for dogs that are 10 pounds.[:D]

Marley has one...he wears it for hiking...and walking sometimes (so he is used to it for hiking). It's just easier if he carries his own stuff when we go hiking! He isn't always thrilled about wearing it, but he deals with it! His is by Outward Hound. I got it at REI.

Oh, I just noticed...he is wearing it in the picture in my signature, because the picture was taken on a hike!
