Can anyone help me determine this dogs breed?

He's adorable!!  Bless you for taking him in!

There are lots of very experienced ;people at this forum, so never hesistate to ask questions if you want information regarding training and behavior.

He is definitely malnourished, and I agree that I probably wouldn't look to hard for the previous owners, either.

Where is Jaime when you need her?  Isn't she an Am Staff breeder?

Hey everybody. Thanks again for all the replys. I have decided on a name(If I keep him). Since I am in college right now studying mythology, I have decided to name him Odin. After the norse mythology god of wisdom and war. At this point I'm not sure what to do, I would love to keep him, but would also hate to take a family pet away from someone. I'm not sure if his injurys were from the previous owners, or he got away and fought another dog, or what. If I knew they were a result of his previous owner, I would definately keep him. He gets along great with my girlfriends son, and he seems to have created a bond with him, wich is a reason I would hate to get rid of him. Any advice on what I should do would be great. I don't want to return him to an owner who treats him bad, but I wouldn't want to take him away from a loving owner either. Like I said, I've lived in this neighborhood for a long time and I've never seen him around, and nobody new has moved in recently. I don't know what I should do. Putting an article in the newspaper seemed good at first, but if his owner is bad, then that would suck. Ahhh...

What part of the country are you from?

It's typical with that breed for people to mistreat them and neglect them.  I wouldn't be surprised if someone dumped him in your neighborhood.  Maybe they didn't want the hassle of a puppy anymore, or maybe they wanted a dog that would fight and they think he won't be mean enough.  Or, it's very very likely that he was just left in someone's backyard and ignored, and he got bored and got out.  In any of those cases I wouldn't want the original owner to have him again.

I'm assuming he didn't have any id on him at all.  If I were you I would look for lost posters all over your area, and look in the paper.  In my opinion, if he's a loved family pet, then they will look for him.

I had the exact same situation with my dog Winston recently.  I never saw any posters or adds in the paper for him so I kept him.  He was in the middle of a fairly busy street in the middle of the night.  I drove down around that area for weeks afterward looking for signs, and checked the paper.  I never found anything, and some people may disagree with me for not putting up "found" posters, but I just couldn't stomach the thought of having to give him back to someone who didn't care enough to realize their 2 month old pup was in the middle of the street at midnight.

Odin is a cute name, by the way.  ;)

Something about him screams American Bulldog to me.  I guess it is the heavier build.  He looks like an AmBull/Amstaff mix, IMO.  Gosh he is a handsome fella, I'm glad he found you/ you found him!

I agree that I'd simply look for "lost" flyers instead of making it public that you found him, since he cxould have gotten away from somebody possibly fighting him or getting ready to... >X.x;<

No idea what he is - but he is adorable and you did a wonderful thing to take him in!

I agree with Lexibelle that if this were a beloved pet, someone would be looking for him, I would keep your eyes open for ads and posters, even check with local vets and shelters to see if the owners have been calling to look for him...  if not - all yours [:D]!!

You need to come back and give us on update on the puppy!  [:)]

How are things going with him??

He's doing good. I went to the vet today and he said that he was probably a mix of pit bull, and maybe boxer or american bulldog. He also said that he was still a little unhealthy, but from what he could tell he was in pretty good shape. The rib that I was talking about, according to the vet was broken at one time but it's healed. I've also been looking around all over the place and haven't seen any posters, and nothings in the paper. I'll give it another week and if nothing shows up I'm keeping him. He loves to play tug, and when we go for walks he doesn't bark at any other dogs or people. He is strong though, I was actually having a hard time with getting the rope (of course I let him get it), but he put up quite a fight. So yeah he's doing good, loves to play, always hyper, and drinks alot. Like I said I'll give it another week, if nothing shows up I'll keep him.

Good for you. I doubt he had a responsible owner, considering the poor shape he was in and the poorly healed rib. Reminds of Stevie, it does! Don't be surprised if he turns out to be the best dog you've ever had! [:D]

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for taking this baby boy in!!!  Did the vet discuss what kind of diet he needs to be on to help get him in good shape again?

Sounds like you probably want to work on teaching him the "drop it" command, now that you know how stubborn and strong he is.  [;)]

Odin is a very handsome fella & judging from the pictures he thinks he's found his home.  If you do keep him, you WILL find a vast ocean of knowledge in here.  I just want to snuggle with him.

fourpaws, I just want to KISS that big ol nose!!
