    new to this whole thing

i recently started volunteering at an animal shelter. it offers buckle and martingale collars (although the fit usually isnt great) and slip leads. the dogs are usually very eager to get out of their kennels, and too many times they manage to slip out of their kennels before i manage to fit martingale/buckle collars around their necks. slip leads, however, are quick and easy to put on, as i could put it around the dog's neck just as it tries to poke its head out of its kennel run. however, when i walked a dog that was a puller with a slip lead, the slip lead remained tight she looked like she being choked by the leash. are slip leads a good choice to use? if so, what should the minimum width of the leash be if im walking a medium/big dog (say, a full-grown lab). if not, any tips for quickly putting a leash on or getting into the kennel without the dog escaping between my legs (the dogs are pretty swift when it comes to getting out)?

I hear ya! I've been in the same situation. Would it work to start by putting the slip lead over their head first, and then once you've got them outside and that initial frenzy is past, fit a buckle collar and switch over to that?

At our local shelter, some volunteers (two 7th graders included) trained the dogs with clickers and treats to stay in their kennels until released. They used to just go crazy and push their way out, but within a week after beginning the training, the dogs learned to wait nicely. It made everything much more pleasant.

At least you all have real collars. We only have the slip leads. :(
