taking a dog bite incedent too far

My Father in law was recently bit by a dog. He is a door to door cable sales man. He was inside (with permission) the owners house when the dog bit him. My father in law is loud and obnoxious and scared of dogs. I can image exactly how he behaved around the dog to get him self bit. He's jumpy around my little 20lb terrier and nerviously shoo's Joey away when he goes up to him for attention. The first time he met Joey at my old apartment, he actually ran back outside while yelling "He's going to bite me, He's going to bite me!"

My father in law also thinks the whole world's against him and it's never his fault. So of course he went way overboard. The dog didn't break the skin. My father in law called animal control and threw a fit when he found out that he had wait 10 days for a rabies result (apparently the dog was 1 year overdue for a rabies vac). The owners couldn't afford the 10 day quarantine anyways and ended up putting the dog to sleep[:(].

My father in law went to the doctor, which I agree was the smart thing to do. He insisting that these people pay for the medical bill and the time he took off from work to go to the doctor, even though his company paid for it. Which I kind-of agree with, but read on...

He had to fill out some paperwork at the county shelter. He's so socially inept...he talked to the shelter staff about how the owners owe him and how horrible this dog was. And how he doesn't think that there should be a difference in the law if someone gets bit by a roaming dog or if someone gets bit by a dog inside the owner's home, "The dog is dangerous." He was offended when a shelter employee said "Well they paid the ultimate price when they put their dog down." Of course he responded with the worst thing he could have possibly said, "It's just a dog and the dog bit me."

He also complained about how bad the shelter smelled (knowing him, he probably said this casually without thinking how offensive he was being, like everytime he offends me and further I've been in this shelter, it's not bad for a shelter). He ranted about this over Sunday Brunch. You should have seen the look on his face when I asked him why he would say something like that to a person who chose to work with dogs for a living and obviously a dog lover. And of course my mother in law responded with "The dog bit him!"

This happened a month ago and he's still complaining about it.

Now I realize that the owners had some fault in this. They should have locked the dog up especially with the way I know my father in law acted. They also should have kept their dog up to date on his rabies.

    I'm so mad.

omg... what a horrible situation. The dog was actually PTS over this?? And his skin wasn't even broken? Wow. Without trashing your FIL (out of respect for you) I can wholeheartedly agree that this was an over-reaction on his part. Yes - the dog should have been up-to-date on it's Rabies, yes - the owners should have locked him up while your FIL was there (if only) but to have the dog destroyed??? I have nothing nice to say now, so ... I will say nothing.

LOL.  Ooo, that will be my new answer for when he asks me when I'm having children.  "Oh well if your around I don't want to have to put my baby to sleep because it bit you."

That's so mean.  Honestly, my in laws are crazy.  I love them, but they are really weird.  They are good people (for the most part) but they lack in some social skills (dam hippies) and my father in law thinks the world revolves around his say and if it doesn't, then someone's out to screw him.  And it's never his fault.  My mother in law has incredable patients, but puts up with too much and allows her husband and even her children to walk all over her.

After FIL came into the house, did he say to the owners, "I'm afraid of dogs, could you lock him up?"

I had someone come to my house to check my DSL satilite.  He came into my house to check somethings.  I told the malinois to "go lay down" and the basenjis to "behave themselves"  (which is about all we can hope for with badsenjis most days).  If the man had wanted, I would have locked the boyz up, but he didn't seem to mind, boyz behaved (they're really very good with people) and the mal stayed in her ever vigilant spot on the sofa and didn't move until he left.

I feel really bad for those people having to put their dog down because of something like that. The poor dog was probably just defending its territory, doing what it thought was right and it lost its life. I am sorry that your FIL got bit, because that's never fun. But it does seem like he overreacted just a tiny bit. [;)]

I keep my dogs outside or upstairs if we have people over. Mainly it's because people don't come over enough for them to have learned manners. They get so excited, bark and jump on anyone who walks in. But I respect that some people are just not comfortable with dogs, so I'd rather have them leave the room.

we have to do something similar and for the same reasons. we usually put ours in their crates and give them an extra special kong.

i have to say that even though i would never let amelia get into a situation where she could/would bite a stranger, but it is nice that her bark scares the crap out of people when they ring the doorbell.

I had an oil burner repairman come to my house a couple of weeks ago and even though he went into the basement through the bulkhead I could tell Molly's barking was freaking him out.
When he asked about the dog barking away I had to reassure him many times that unless Molly had developed the ability to open 2 doors he was safe. He said "I've heard that many times". So I even showed him the door to the basement (from inside the house) was closed and then the door at the top of the stairs was also closed.
    He still acted fearful.
But I can understand that so I tried to make him feel better.
But if someone is afraid of dogs they should tell the homeowner that so everyone can remain safe.

Do you think your FIL is looking to sue?  I'm just a little confused as to why he needed to go to a doctor if he was supposedly bit and it didn't even break the skin.  Did he develop a huge bruise or something?  Did he want to get evaluated for the rabies prophylaxis since the dog was overdue on his vax or did animal control test the poor dog after he was PTS?

I'm sorry - I don't mean to sound rude to you (I know that you have nothing to do with it), but I am angered by this whole situation.   I am very sorry that he was bit, but he is taking this whole thing a little too far, IMHO.

    I am so sorry.

It sounds like the poor dog's owners had/have much to learn about dogs but your FIL has much to learn in general. His actions seem incredibly self-centered and juvenile. And who pays for everyone's lapses in behavior--well the dog of course.

Gosh.  I just don't know what to say here.  Considering that the people couldn't afford to pay for the quarentine, it seems wrong to "double dip" and make them pay for time away from work when he didn't loose a penny.  This is a workers comp injury and the carrier is liabel for any and all expenses INCLUDING the medical bills and lost time.  I'm gonna shut up.

That's a sad situation.  I don't really understand why there was a concern about rabies (even if the vacs weren't UTD) if the skin wasn't broken.

Oh no, you are not being rude. In case you can't tell by the tone of my writing, I think my father in law is nuts. Really.

Anyways, he is not looking to sue as far as I know. He went to the doctor because his boss probably told him to and to just make sure there was not hemeraging (sorry spelling) or anything. He went right after the "incedent."

My father in law involved animal control. He called Animal Control. Animal control discovered that the dog was overdue on its vac., so the dog needed to be quarantined. My father in law was upset that he had to wait 10 days for the quarantine period, but the owners couldn't afford 10 days of quarantine anyways so the dog was PTS for rabies testing.

My father in law knows jack about animals. He didn't know that rabies was not an issue if the dog didn't break the skin.

In fact here's another interesting couple of comments he's made.
-When Joey and I moved in with my husband..."You're going to leave that dog outside right?" In which my husband responded with "Dad, you telling Margaret to leave Joey outside is like telling you to leave Emily (my husbands lil sis) outside."

    - "When you have children your getting rid of the cats, right?" The funny part about this comment, is that I just read an article on Toxoplasmosis (that disease pregnant woman are concerned about contracting from cat poo). So I was able to explain that there was nothing to worry about because my cats are indoor. I also added that It would be more likely to contract toxo..... gardening than cleaning the cat box. Which is funny becuase he had just made a comment on the weeds in my garden.

Ok, now it makes sense why he went to the doctor - his company is covering their a** just in case, since it is a worker's comp. case.

Regarding the quarantine, according to this link, [linkhttp://www.petplace.com/dogs/animal-bites-rabies-and-quarantine-in-dogs/page1.aspx]http://www.petplace.com/dogs/animal-bites-rabies-and-quarantine-in-dogs/page1.aspx[/link]  the dog could have probably been kept at home since he had been vaccinated in the past but his vax is now expired.  It's a shame he had to needlessly die.

I just wish that the owners put the dog in a separate room or something so this could have been avoided.  I wonder if the dog had a previous biting history?
