    HELP! Skunked

By Golly, Miss Molly has done it this time and I'm the one in the dog house.  Suddenly we have too many dogs and it's all my fault.  Read on the net that douche will get the smell out and my hubby and the one son left at home refuses to buy 6 to 10 boxes of the stuff.  I have to stay home and wait for a phone call or I would go buy it, if it works.  Please, someone out there has to have the magic pill.  Please,Please share with me.  Molly is the little rascal next to the ball hog.    Oh yea, do skunks hibernate in the winter?  If so, I'm praying for snow tonight.

Oh Gosh been there. Twice, first my DH was taking out the trash and smacked a skunk right in the bum. He took a bath in tomato juice. (That was the kids favorite bedtime story for years)

Then Sara got skunked.  I washed her real good with tomato juice until i could get to the store. Then I bought a product at the pet store to wash her with. It works really well and takes the smell almost away. BUT you have to do it right away. Then I washed her in tomato juice one more time. You could smell it on her a few times when it rained, but it wasn't that bad. It lasted maybe a month.

Yes skunks do hibernate in the winter. Good Luck.

Wrigley was recently skunked.  We used tomato paste (we didn't have juice on hand and it was about 11pm) on the dog.  It helped a little.  We then took him to petsmart and they had a special shampoo they used.  They sell it as well.  I haven't noticed smelling it, even when he's wet.  Best of luck, that is a horrible smell.

Thanks Rob,  That's what we did plus use a warm water and vinegar rinse and it WORKED!  I still smell it on her nose but I didn't want to get to close to her eyes.  This was my first and I hope last experience with a skunk.  Poor Molly is such a good girl.  She didn't move and didn't shake the excess water off until she got outside.  Thanks guys for all your help.  Wonder how long it will take me to get out of the dog house.

Yes, the above link has got the answer!!!

Conrad got skunked literally more times than I can count back when we lived in our little shack in the woods and on the water in Maryland. Good lord. Nothing wakes you up at 6 AM than having your dog who you've just let out for his morning potty come barrelling back into the house reeking of skunk.  We started buying the HUGE bottles of Hydrogen Peroxide and the HUGE boxes of baking soda and just keeping them around.

It is seriously the only skunk remedy I ever found that worked. And that includes commercial products. She'll still smell a little for a while, and she'll smell when she's wet for a long time (like, months), but she won't OMG REEEEEK!!!! anymore.

Oh yea the smell!!!  It literally woke my son up.  What is that smell?    It was bad and I'm stocking up on the supplies as soon as possible.  I was just wondering if that beautiful white dog ended up pink?

I want to know where is the meatballs? He looks like he is enjoying the tomato paste bath with that silly grin on his face.

To answer your question "when will I get out of the dog house?" I stay in the dog house all the time. Always my fault and always "WE have to many dogs" I got your WE DH.. in my pocket... Like he does anything with them in the first instance..  [8|]

This is the recipe I used on Molly.  I can't express enough how great it worked.  Walked into the house after work holding my breath thinking the smell came back but it didn't.  1 quart 3% hydrogen peroxide.  1/4 cup baking soda.  1 teaspoon liquid dish soap. I used Dawn.  If you have a really big dog you may have to double this.    Mix in a bucket.  Soak your dogs fur, but be careful not to get it in their eyes. Knead solution into the fur and be sure to get every part of him/her. Rinse thoroughly.  Then I used one gallon of warm water with 1 cup of white vinegar for the final rinse.  She smelled like a pickle until she was dry but her coat is nice and soft with no hint of the skunk smell.

That recipe works very well, and it seems to work best if you use a grease cutting dishwashing liquid like Dawn.
