I'm not a breeder here, but I would suspect that the female dog would not have allowed the male to connect of she wasn't in season. • Xebby Posted : 10/4/2006 11:23:15 AM Some dogs will mount but not connect.  I don't really know the reasoning for this but it can happen with two dogs of any sex female on female or female mounting on male strange to us but it's normal doggy behavor.  Did they connect, a dog will usally not mate if the female is not in heat.  The first week of being in heat she may not have any spoting at all and after the spoting stops she could still be in heat for about a week after.  Either way, if she is not a show dog then I would strongly suggest getting her spayed as soon as you can. 0 LIKE Like Share You have posted to a forum that requires a moderator to approve posts before they are publicly available. And to reiterate, both dogs should be desexed. The uterus of a dog deteriorates with every season.   Pyometra can be deadly if not caught and treated. Guess what the treatment is...spaying. Basically about 1-2 weeks after a season a bitch may seem depressed or lethargic, run a temperature, drink a lot and go off her feed. If the Pyometra (which basically is a uterus filled with pus in medical terms)...is "open" she will leak brownish yucky liquid that smells really bad. If it is "closed" you may get no signs at all until it ruptures which can kill the bitch. Both types are extremely serious and can kill within DAYS.   The general view of the vet community is that it WILL occur with age in all unspayed bitches. This is why even breeders like myself, spay their bitches that are no longer being used in a programme....even if she is 5-8 years old. At any rate, Glenda is 100% correct that it isn't about whether you wouldn't dump the pups.  The problem is one of sheer numbers.  For every pup born in a backyard mating, another one in a shelter may not get a home.
