Ok I'm ashamed to ask, but.....

Sammy was neutered about 4 months ago, and he always had the "flap" where his testicles once were..... but today I noticed that there is hardly anything left of the "flap"!!!  So... is this normal?  Does that skin kinda go away when there isn't anything there?

I noticed he was paying a bit more attention to that area the past few days, but all dogs lick themselves at least sometimes, so I didn't think of it until he was on his back for belly rubs today and I noticed his lack of "flap"......

Will someone help me out here before I go crazy and wonder what is wrong with Sammy???  Is this a concern or not?

    Thanks! :)

ETA:  Sorry for posting in the wrong section - thought I was in health, not general.  Oopsies.

The little flap just gets reabsorbed because it's not in use anymore.

    I don't think there's any problem.

    [:D]

If he's licking his rear, he might have impacted anal glands. If he smells very strong, that's the biggest clue.

Yes, the flap goes away. It is normal.

Whew.  Good to know it's supposed to disappear.  The last time I recall seeing it, it looked normal, and then today it was like 90% gone, so I must have missed everything in between and I think that's what was scary.

jeano - thanks for the advice about the anal glands, but it doesn't smell and he was never back right towards the anus - my aunt's last dog, a dachsund, had to have hers squeezed every few weeks so I'm actually familiar with what that presents as.  I think he got a bug bite back near his penis and that's what was causing the itching for him.

    Thanks, guys [:D]

The info here helped me and when I had Shadow neutered, I returned in kind. Right after, the sac is still swollen, as if he still had his spark plugs. Over time, the swelling goes down and the bruising goes away. Eventually, the sac draws up to almost non-existence, shrivelies, as someone called them. All normal. And it allows someone at a glance to tell if a male is neutered.

I think that the worst I've ever seen was Shadow after his snip....poor guy came home sporting two black SOFTBALL size things.....and now there is nothing.  The vet who did my other boys, except for Tyler is doing Theo on Tuesday.  Theo will have a much more invasive surgery, similar to a spay, since his testicles are in hiding someplace......

Poor guy. Well, that surgery would be necessary just to avoid the complications of undescended testes, anyway. Good luck and God speed in recovery.

Wow, SOFTBALLS???  Sammy didn't seem to have much swelling, but we didn't adopt him until 2 days post-neuter.  Good luck with Theo on Tuesday!  Sending good vibes so he heals up just fine.  Give him hugs and kisses for us!  At least the outcome will be much safer than leaving them alone.

And Ron, you're right that it is useful in determining neuter status.  Sammy doesn't like intact males so I feel like all I do at the dog park is walk around checking other dogs out [:D]  I suppose I just never noticed that other dogs didn't have the sac still.

Yeah, softballs.  They made him spend the night and then we had to go back into the kennel area to retrieve him cuz he wouldn't let anyone near him.  This is SHADOW who loves everyone, but he wouldn't even let them close enough to the kennel to feed him!  Gosh, wonder why?  That swelling was horrible.

And Theo will get the typical spoiling that my critters get when they are spuetered.  I hate that they'll have to go looking for the testicles, but I really trust this vet.....he does good work.

I'm still waiting for Marlowe's sad sack to go away! He is, well, he was really well hung even for a dog and that sack has had a lot of staying power! It's so sad and deflated, I keep waiting for it to shrivel, but he's still sporting it. I always giggle when other people refer to him as a girl. I'm like, "Have you SEEN what's under the hood?"

    Oh well.

Don't be ashamed.  Grady is my first male dog.  I've always had females. He came to me altered.  He was recently neutered when I got him.  One thing that had me tweaking was this discharge he was getting from his winkie (looking @ Glenda & winking - hehehehehe).  I took him to the vet 3 times because of it.  Each time my vet said it was okay & I left feeling like a complete idiot.   I guess I forgot to get a male dog owner's manual. ~L~

Yeah, the swelling of the bulbus (sp?)  had me going for a bit, and the whole "red rocket" thing, and now this.  sigh.  I agree that there should be a male dog owners guide!  And to think that it took me 15 minutes of searching to find a site that mentioned the sac getting  "reabsorbed" after netuering.  Sheesh.

But yes - we got him 2 days after his neuter, so this is all very new.

    Thanks for everything, guys :)
