Seizures in 6 week old puppy

Yesterday our runt (Lewis) started convulsing. He went to the vet and they stopped so we took him home. Last night he had four within a matter of an hour and a half and so we rushed him to the e-vet. He was admitted and hasn't had another seizure since the middle of last night. However he has some left side weakness and his gate now seems to be off. I am wondering if it was because of the vaccines. Does any body know of puppy vaccines causing this kind of reaction?

    Poor baby.

The stress and immune response to vaccines is definitely a triggor, for many epileptic dogs. Allergic reactions are also a triggor. It's possible that he's having a reaction to the vaccines.

I hope that he recovers, quickly.

Could he possibly be hypoglycemic? Hopefully it's not epilepsy as that can have an effect on the futures of the other pups as well as the breeding careers of sire and dam.

All the best to your puppy and I hope it is something that can be treated and the effects are transient and not permanent.

OH there's no chance he got into anything? or that Mom has had anything like flea treatment or anything? And did they do a bloodpanel to rule out liver or kidney things?

ETA: what brand/type of shots were they given?

he was tested for hypoglycemia and was given karo syrup to try and counteract it, but there is no indication that he has it. He had bloodwork done and so far everything has come back negative. He was tested for liver shunts and for kidney damage. We are hoping it is an adverse reaction to the vaccines and not something congenital. The singleton from Lil's last litter is well on her way to her CH and she has the same sire/dam as this litter. We would have to spay her and alter this whole litter. As far as we can think of there is nothing toxic that he could have gotten into especially since if he would have gotten it so would the other three, and we don't give Lil flea treatments we give her brewers yeast and she has never had issues with fleas. They were given the combo vaccine DLHP-P. I usually don't have it given until they are over 10 weeks, but I was swayed by my vet. He was only 2lbs at the checkup. None of the litter was dewormed, because their fecal smears camed back negative so the only thing they have had are those shots. He was fine up until Tuesday night- he howled all night, but he can be a whiner, and then all this happened on Wednesday (they were given their shots on Monday afternoon)

So it was a 6 or 7 way vaccine then? what brand? that can make a difference as certain brands are notorious for causing reactions. Can't recall the brand tho...Ft Dodge??? Anyone?
    • Gold Top Dog
It was a five way vaccination and it was from Ft. Dodge. None of the other litters I've had have been given that brand, but the vet in ID (we are originally from PA) didn't have the brand our previous litters had received.

ooh....Ft Doge has had a lot of incidents. I'd avoid it in future even for adult dogs. Has the doc said if the effects will be temporary...the neurologic things you mentioned? I hope so!

they aren't really sure. I guess time will tell. He is still at the vet and will stay probably until Monday. If he doesn't have any more seizures and the vet still can't find anything wrong with him then the vet says that it would be safe to assume that it is an adverse reaction to the vaccination. However, he will be rexamined in two weeks and we will be delaying any vaccines for as along as possible. Our big guy- Drake who we also call Buddha is supposed to be going to a show home and possibly our female Neve if she turns out will also be show quality. So we are really hoping it is something that we can get a diffinative answer on. We may be holding on to the pups until they are quite a bit older now instead of allowing them to go to their new homes at 12 weeks.

Why is a 6 week old pup being vacced?  Vaccines shouldn't be given before 9 weeks, according to Dr. Jean Dodds, and then only parvo and distemper (modified live virus).

I do my own vaccines for precisely this reason. It is too hard to find a vet who will do anything other than a 5 or 7 way vaccine and they don't need all that stuff, and they sure don't need it so young.  You can order vaccine from Revival Pet...that's one of the few places I found where I can get JUST what I want and need.

Fort Dodge is terrible in so many areas, and yes, there have been many, many reported reactions to their vaccines.  I'm sooooo sorry this little guy is sick.
