    Another Problem

Ive only posted a few times before, but I have yet another problem:

I have a problem with keeping my commitments to my pets. I love new puppies, but as they get older I get it into my head to give them up and get a new puppy, one much smaller (or bigger) and different.

I also know that breeding irresponsibly is wrong, but I still want to breed my bitch on her next heat.

I know its wrong to buy and dump and buy and dump pets. I know its wrong to breed just because. But that doesnt change how I feel. How can I overcome this? I want to be a good pet owner, yet all these temptations are just getting at me.

With my cat it is different. I have a white cat and with her everything is different, shes good with the litterbox, ocasionally jumps on the bed for a cuddle, and I would never think of giving her up. Maybe its because she is so independent.

I love dogs but how can I get over my problem?

I don't have any suggestions for getting over the problem, but I'd strongly suggest that you just buy a nice, big stuffed dog and keep it on your bed. If you're unable to make a life-long committment to a dog, don't get one.

Your problem is immaturity or irresponsibility or some combination of the two. The way to get over it is to realize that you have another life in your hands and you have to do the best you possibly can for it, and if you can't do that, do what Joyce suggested.

Edited to ask: Did you rehome the tick infested dog?

I did not rehome my girl, she is still with me. I have never rehomed a dog but it is always on my mind, and I dont think a good dog owner should have thoughts like that.

Like I said in my first post, I was having trouble with my first dog and i had thoughts of giving her up, yet my heart would not allow me to.

Its the thoughts that bother me [&:]

It is those thoughts you must squelch.  I'm not too religious but I think its the devil taking to you.

Please don't bring more umwanted puppies into the world.  Spay your girl now, its better for her health, and for the overpopulation of pets.  Its painful to have babies.

I do hope you grow up and if you ever have kids, that you show them the right thing is to stand by your pets.  I can't STAND parents who dump their pets after the "Cuteness" wore off., and their kids see them do it !   Curious, did your parents dump dogs when they grew tired of them?

Um, this is the person who wrote about wanting to give up her dog because she had fleas or ticks not so long ago.

I'm not going to take the bait here . . .

Its painfully obvious to me that you are "trolling" here and merely trying to cause trouble.  Its clear that you know what will get people on a dog forum riled up and are trying to push buttons . . . . well, it ain't gonna' work with me.

My intuition tells me that if the "good" members here ignore this individual, he/she will go away . . . .

On the very slight possibility that you are NOT a troll, please reconsider breeding your dog. People here spend countless hours of their precious time working in rescue. It's a heartbreaking job. When people discard their pets they leave a very painful aftermath. The shelters are full of unwanted animals, many of which find themselves there because they committed the "sin" of growing up and losing their puppy appeal. It's unfair, afterall - the puppy did NOT choose you - you chose it! WAY too many of these beautiful creatures end up being executed because of people who feel the way you do. A dog is not a consumer good, it's a living, breathing, FEELING creature. I think that if you really want to dispel the thoughts and feelings you are having, you should spend a day or two volunteering at your local shelter. I don't know where you are but if you PM me, I will find a shelter close to you. If you spend some time helping to "clean up" other peoples afterthoughts (their discarded pets), I guarantee your feelings will change. When you look in the eyes of the dogs who are terrified, stressed, distraught and broken because their beloved owners simply don't want them anymore - you'll gain a whole new perspective.

With my cat it is different. I have a white cat and with her everything is different, shes good with the litterbox, ocasionally jumps on the bed for a cuddle, and I would never think of giving her up. Maybe its because she is so independent.

If you appreciate the independence of a cat so much, then why not just have a cat?

Come on, I think you could pack a few more hot-button issues into that post, or maybe you're saving some for the next time you try to wind everyone up? Sorry but the troll alert is sounding loudly here.

I am truly dissapointed in this forum. I try to vent and ask for help and I get labeled a troll, and someone who is not worthy of your time.

**Content removed**, not all of us were born with the instinct that pets are for life, that breeding is wrong etc. I love dogs and this is why im here trying to get help on how to overcome these thoughts, because even though I have never acted on any of these thoughts they still bother me.

Yes I would love for my girl to have puppies, but I havent bred her. Im seriously thinking of spaying her but my heart yearns for a litter of puppies. It doesnt mean im going to do it though. My last dog lived to be 17 and I always wanted pups from her but she was never bred. It terrifies me to think that she could be coming into heat soon, but im having conflictive thoughts.

I know I will probably never breed her but I have never spayed a pet.

I dont know why I am still justifying my post because I know I will still get labeled as a troll, so I'll just leave you with that.

Thank you for denying your help, I see good dog ownership is a sort of elite club for snobs, and anyone who isnt born thinking like you gets pushed away and called wrongful names. Way to promote good dog ownership.

The shelters are full of dogs because of people like YOU. People who dont bother to educate, who only talk trash instead of teaching. I hope the things you say lay heavily on your shoulders because if snobbish people dissapeared I would think the shelters would be emptier

I offered a very specific suggestion in answer to your question: "How can I overcome this?"  I did not deny you help, in fact I offered to find a shelter near you where you can volunteer.

Thank you LabCrab, I think I will be taking your advice, it has been very helpful. I have a small shelter just a few blocks from me and I think I will call them up.

Maybe you should take a part-time job at your local pound and take note of all the dogs that are treated unfairly and tossed aside like rubish. You talk about how to change your point of view on dog owning but I believe it is something that is in ones heart naturally, not taught. Life is life whether it be human or animal and it is to be respected. One cannot wish respect, it can only be earned.
At the moment it seems that you are incapable of caring for something other than yourself so be kind and don't involve innocent little creatures in an empty life. They don't deserve it.
