When to consider the vet over vomitting

Ok this is just first day that i've noticed this but I got home from work this morning to a pile of doggy diareha on my kitchen floor. As im cleaning this up Buster spits up and then goes into his reverse sneezing. I clean that up as well and he does it once more. Had slight food chunks in it. Doesnt look like he had eaten from his bowl for the day yet so Im assuming thats undigested stuff from last night. He wants to be hyper and jump around but it seems like his tummy is upset so he lays down right away. Is it possible its just a dog like flu? I mean he often throws up after eating if he eats to fast or gets hyper shortly after his meal and seems fine after that but he just seems to be upset or something today. His nose was wet and cold also. Should I consider the vet or just wait a day to see if the symptoms clear up by tomorow? I could feed him cold cooked rice for the day incase his food may not be helping the stomach. Any ideas?

Being a new dog owner, take my advice with a grain of salt here . . . BUT if it were my dog, I would stop feeding entirely for the remainder of the day, and perhaps even tomorrow (I highly doubt it will hurt the dog, especially if he's not eating, or keeping it down in the first place) and observe.  If things continue despite nothing in the digestive system or get worse, I'd call the vet ASAP.  However, it may just be something he ate and will pass . . . slowly introduce some food after a day and see what happens.

Long story short, I'd give it 24 hours before calling . . . this is assuming things do not get worse of course and there is no change in his demeanor/behavior (e.g. playing etc.)

I might wait over night and see how he does.  My vet had me give Izzy half of a Zantac 75 every 12 hours when she had a little gastroentinitus recently.  I think some people give pepto bismol but I have no idea what the dose is.  A little pure pumpkin also helps with an upset tummy.  I probably would fast him as well.  As long as his energy level is OK it might be able to wait until morning to see if he throws up or has anymore diarrhea.  Izzy is notorious for finding things in the yard and eating them and then being sick the next day.  Is there anything he could have gotten into?  If you see him getting worse though I would take him to the vet for sure.  If nothing else, I would probably at least call the vet to see what they suggest.

I am sure someone with more knowledge will be along soon.

Penny used to have bouts of throwing up like this. I would not feed her anything until she perked up a bit. I'd wave people food under her nose after a bit and if she looked interested, I'd give her a tiny bit, or a tiny bit of dog food. The best thing for them when they're feeling sick is boiled chicken and rice, my vet told me. You boil them up together to give the rice a little flavour. I would go to the vet if a) the dog can't keep down liquids or b) the dog threw up everything in its stomach and started throwing up yellow bile or c) the dog still has no interest in food after, say, 24 hours or so.

Penny's problems were eventually all fixed by taking her off commercial food. Once the dog is eating again, feed tiny amounts every hour or so. You can gradually increase the amount as you go.

I agree.  My doberman had a similar problem a few weeks ago and I didn't feed him for a full 24 hours (I still offered him water).  Then I offered him is food and he has been just fine since.  With holding food gives the "insides" time to heal.  If you keep feeding them it just keeps irritating the "insides" and it won't heal.  If my doberman's problem was to go any longer than 24 hours I would have gotten him to the vet.  Hope your little friend gets to feeling better soon.
