    Unbelievable...

I was at work yesterday when my coworker called me to tell me what happened to her dog. She adopted a GSD named Sarge from the animal shelter a few years ago. Well Sarge managed to escape from the yard yesterday. They went searching for him and couldn't find him. Not long after the search, the animal shelter called stating they have him and that he wasn't in good shape. It turns out the police found him and they tried to catch him with the pole and noose. He kept running from them and they claim he tried to attack them so they tazered him 3 times. Once in the mouth and twice on the body. They brought him to the shelter where he was barely conscious. The animal shelter told her that they didn't think he was going to make it. My coworker rushed to the shelter and he was still alive. The folks at the animal shelter were livid. They couldn't believe that they would tazer him like that. Fortunately, Sarge is alive and back at home recuperating. Can you believe that? I was shocked when I heard that one. Sarge is a big love bug and I can't imagine him attacking the police. Even if he did, was it really necessary to tazer him 3 times? I feel so bad for him. My coworker says he looks like hell. Angry

Wow, some people just take too much power into their hands dont they?

Is there any way she can report the officers? I doubt it would be necessary to use such force on a dog.

Poor baby!  That is so sad.  I hope she does try top bring charges against these officers, there is no reason to do something like that.[:@]

I hope he feels better soon.

I seriously doubt Sarge needed to be tazered 3 times.  1 tazer on a very large man will bring him down, the police defiantly took it way over the line with Sarge.  Their are some ;police officers who abuse their power and it sounds like these officers did just that.  [:@] [sm=evilfire.gif]

I hope Sarge gets well soon.  My heart goes out to him.

That's awful! Poor Sarge!  I hope he makes a full recovery and isn't fearful! It's imposibble to understand why a group of officers would do that - disgusting![:(]

Poor Sarge hope he is feeling better.

These police officers should have it done to them and see how they like it. They probably didn't know how to use the pole which scared the dog more then anything. There is  no excuse for what they done.

Depending on what was happening at the time, the dog might have appeared to be more aggressive than he actually is.  It isn't out of the realm of possibility that a GSD might bark at a group of officers in uniform chasing after him - and the police probably have zero, zip, zilch training on how to recognize a dog that is frightened from a dog that means biz.
What's needed here isn't a lawsuit, it's education.  Many police departments hold regular trainings, and if your friend could suggest to the director of the shelter, that they offer a free training on dog body language and behavior for the officers, it might help some other dog in the future.

    Poor Sarge!!  Healing vibes sweetie.

1 tazer on a very large man will bring him down

With an exception, that being Rodney King. He was way high on speedballs and couldn't feel pain. He was tazered 3 times and kept coming at the officers. Then they whipped clubs to physically disable him. Nowadays, the cops swarm. Anyway, the media never showed the part where he took 3 tazer shots and it didn't phase him at all.

That being said, I agree that the cops went a little overboard. All you have to do to get a dog's attention is whip out a steak. Works here every time.

Here's an update. I spoke to my coworker today and she told me that the animal control guy came to the house. What happened was Sarge was found in a lady's yard. She left her gate open and he went in there. She was afraid he might do something so she left the gate open hoping he would leave. He didn't leave so she decided to close the gate and call the shelter. The shelter sent out the guy and he tried to catch Sarge but couldn't get him with the pole and noose. The guy called the police for back up. The police came and they managed to get him on the pole and noose and Sarge freaked out. The guy claims he couldn't control him and the police tazered him. They said that the 2 tazers "malfunctioned" and on the 3rd one, he was incapacitated. They claim he was "dead" and the vets managed to bring him back. The vets were very angry at how he was handled. I guess this is why the guy came to my coworkers house to explain what happened. Not that it excuses what went on. Sarge weighs 90 lbs. He's a mellow guy. My coworker finds it hard to believe that he couldn't control him but she wasn't there so she doesn't know. Either way, Sarge is doing way better. She says he's doing way better than he looks.

Poor Sarge. Glad to hear that he is doing better.

Still I think it kind of seems weird that they had to tazered him 3 times especially if he is on the catch pole. I would think he would be a safe distance away from the officer to cause them any harm and I would think they should just let him calm down on his own on the pole. Then again it's hard to judge without being there during this situation.
