Is AKC teaming with Petland?

    Is AKC teaming with Petland?

This came across another list and I can only HOPE this is not true Angry

"Thought some of you might care about this....after promoting the High Volume
Breeders business and getting behind PAWS, the AKC has now outdone itself. Today
at the Delegates meeting, the AKC announced that the Board has signed a contract
with Petland Discount stores to educate
store employees about the importance of AKC registration. The plan is that the
store will charge the AKC registration fee at the time of sale and register the
puppy on line. My understanding is that the Board voted 12 to 1 to enter into
this contract. Write, email, call your Board members, especially contact Dennis
Sprung...tell them to activate the termination clause in the
contract...that we, the constituents and customers of the AKC, do NOT want the
    AKC
involved in business with a pet shop!"

I've emailed AKC to see if they can shed some light or confirm/deny the above. I'll keep y'all posted!

All I ahve to say is yuck!  The more and more I hear about AKC, the more it makes me think I would never compete in one of their events.
    • Gold Top Dog
Though I don't agree with this partnership, I know why it is happening.  There has been a rapid decline in AKC registrations for the last few years.  The AKC is doing everything it can to keep registration numbers, and therefore registration fees, at a higher level.

You can bet that I will be protesting this to AKC, of which I am a member.  I think it's horrifying that this organization would pair itself with a known puppy broker and would knowingly support the puppy mill trade.

Gina, do you know of any link to an original source?  I'd like to have this to share with other boards that I'm on.

Here is a link to the delegates meeting minutes for June (there is no meeting minutes posted later than that), which describes a serious concern over the AKC's financial situation and stresses that their strongest cash flow comes from registrations (which are declining) and "non-core" income (sponsorships, etc).

If the rumor is true, then 'nuff said there - they are getting desperate. If it's confirmed I'll have much more to say, but I'd rather reserve judgement at this point. It's hard to believe. . . .I think . . .[8|]

Xer...there's a blog who's URL appears below. I am so hoping it's just rumor. I am sure they are getting flooded with mail about it as it's burning up the 'net lol. If they just put a "NO WE'RE NOT" on the main page that will stem the tide...assuming that the no is genuine!

It always seems to help a rumor spread if it's believeable which this certainly is for the reasons you and brookcove mention, $$$. BUT there has to be some concern over public perception...so...why take such a huge risk?

Since they are backing PAWS it makes SOME sense...as PAWS will push the larger hobby breeders down and keep the small ones very small...?? I'm anxious to hear back for sure! [sm=uhoh.gif]

I know they developed some deal with Hunt Corp in the 90's  not a far stretch if you think about it.
    • Gold Top Dog
Welp....I just heard from one who I consider a very reliable source that this is INDEED reality [:'(] She said the delegates were up in arms and asked Menaker to rescind the contract post haste....to which he replied "if we do that then we'll have to raise the take on entries form $2 to $5"...

Umm...I'm voting for the $3 increase!!!

I am really hoping that this was never intended to really happen but was just some drastic scare tactic to make a $3 increase go over without too much fuss? Lesser of 2 evils thing? Would they do that?...*sigh*

I just heard this weekend that the Hunte Corp is now SHOWING!!! I haven't checked into it but supposedly Jimmy Moses is showing a Hunte GSD. I hope it's not so

If UKC would seperate APBT from Am Staffs no more AKC for me

    Oh my heavens.

It's got to be a scare tactic.

I don't personally care - I have no invested interested in AKC at all. But I feel for my friends who do (however misguided I may quietly consider them, lol).

I was kind of creeped out reading the minutes of the Kennel Club delegates' meeting. I'm used to reading the minutes of our working registry - lots about the welfare of the BREED, with just enough about the registry to assure me that the registry won't collapse from mishandling of the business aspect.

I was amazed at the arrogance of the AKC meeting minutes. "Years ago we were the only game in town . . .now we have 23 competitors . . ." First of all, several of the "competitors" are the original or working (or both) breed registries who chose to remain independent because they don't LIKE the AKC. The Kennel Club's policies continue to alienate more and more people all the time, but it's been going on for a LONG time, whether they choose to acknowlege the fact or not.

And what is their response, now that they've finally figured out they have a problem? Listening to what their members want? Becoming more responsive? Making their "product" more attractive? Doing more for the welfare of the dogs, regardless of how it may undermine the power of the Westminister breeders at the top?

Nope, they take it out on the "hoi poloi" - the majority of small time breeders who are in it for the love of their breed, participants in performance events, and in my opinion, on the dogs. [sm=banghead002.gif]

    If that doesn't scream support back yard breeders and puppy mills, I don't know what does!  This is just awful.  The more I hear about AKC the more I dislike them!!  [:@] [:@] [:@] [:@] [:@] [:@] [:@] [:@] [:@] [:@] [:@] [:@] [:@] [:@] [:@] [:@] [:@] [:@] [:@] [:@] [:@] [:@] [:@] [:@] [:@] [:@]

Gotta say, since I've become involved in the doggy scene, the AKC has not made a fan of me. At all. This is just another piece of evidence for my file.

Maybe I am naieve but I thought the AKC was a lot more respectable than this. Truly disturbing. They are the ones who speak out against pet stores & puppy mills. If they are so broke, I agree with Gina, raise the price of registration I am sure ALL respectable AKC people would be more than happy to pay it.

    Or have a fundraiser.

*sigh* Are they going to start registering doodles next to get more registration fees? They are going to lose a whole lot of respect from a whole lot of people if they go through with this.

Jimmy Moses is indeed (or at least was) showing a Hunt Corp dog

Sad, very, very sad, do you know the name of the dog? I saw him this weekend in Altoona when I was showing Saturday but did not see the dog(s) he was showing, I do know he won the group because as I was leaving the show and saying good bye to a vendor friend she commented that he won the group, I hope not with the Hunt dog
