Well, now folks, we all KNOW that dogs don't understand English! [8|] That's why I can talk to them and they GET so much of what I'm saying.
With Rusty I started with his pills, but I'd ALWAYS talked to my dogs just like I'd talk to a person. Dr. X says this will make you feel better....piece of JUST cheese and I'd TELL him, this is JUST cheese, now this one has your pill, etc. Rusty would lay perfectly still for his IV fluids.....cuz mom said that they were super important and he really HAD to have them 4X a week.
The MS Walk this summer is another good example. Tyler is the pup who wasn't trainable according to his "new" people, so he came home. On the way to town I talked to Tyler and told him how very important the walk was and I needed for him to be extra good. This pup was not quite a year old and he was sooooo totally focused on the walk. The volunteers would try to give him water...nope, not taking any unless MOM says to take a drink and then I'll take a few slurps to make her happy. Forget making new friends DURING the walk, forget talking treats from even Mom.....this is an important walk, and I'm gonna WALK. He wouldn't even potty until we got back to the Civic Center and then he went up a hill and away from the path.
There are just so many things during the course of each and every day that make me know with absolute certainty that my crew, while they might not "get" each and every word, knows exactly what I'm saying 90% of the time.
But, dogs don't understand English......[
