My dogs wind up with a huge vocabulary simply because I talk to them all the time (c'mon folks -- think about it -- ME?? The one who is incapable genetically of being BRIEF???) OF COURSE they know a lot of words. I never shut up!
So yeah, mine know all the typicals of names, things, activities -- they know all the different vet names (Billy's had a ton of vets that have helped us so Dr. D conjures a different image from Dr. B, and Dr. S is the Saturday vet, and Dr. G is the UF vet -- and beyond.).
Mine know phrases -- "Go see the kids" means pet therapy of a ton of varieties, "Go to Eastbrook" is the Alzheimer's home, but mine know a ton of individual words -- particularly ones they pair with food or fun.
"Rockin Raspberry" will bring ANYONE sailing thru the yard for yogurt
"we're all going beddytimes away" brings intense euphoria - that's FAMILY including dogs going to a motel - an ADVENTURE
"Mom and Dad are going beddytimes away" -- NOPE - not as happy a phrase because that means not going with Mom, BUT on the other paw, it means getting to play with Dr. B (who has kept Billy at his house for me) and his kids, and Luna is up for Miss Emily's Bed and Bisquit ANY time. But it provokes a completely different response.
"You guys have to look after the house" means Mom 'n Dad are going out without them -- but it's shorter than "going to work" which is all day. But when we're all beddytimes away then it s" You guys have to look after the room" -- so it's a concept they understand.
Vocabulary is built -- and the more you talk to them, and the more you *expect* understanding, the more you'll get it.
