Does your dog recognize certain words?

Aside from commands (sit, down, heel, drop it, stay, this way, let's go, wait, go to your bed, go get it, etc.), the best thing Louise knows is "Where's Kevin?!" (Kevin is my husband). When I say this she starts wiggling, runs and jumps on Kevin and licks his face like crazy.

    Marty knows:

Marty, Martin! (when he's in trouble), come here, sit, rollover, sit up, give paw, lay down, give kisses, treat, go potty, dog park, "wanna go to Mom and Dad's house?", up, this way, off, breakfast, hug, brush, towel, and names of various toys-duck, sheep, pig, ball, rope, bear.

There's one dog in the shelter right now that's learned to slow down when I say "easy."  She'll speed up again if I say "hurry up."

    Gypsy knows:

    Down
    Stay
    Dance
    Beg
    Crawl
    Leave it

    Andrew --DS#1
    Robby--DS#2
    Dad, Daddy
    Mom
    Harvey --cat#1
    Bandit--cat#2
Girls--the Guniea Pigs, Mollie and Sammi
    Look at me
Where's your toys? She goes to get them.

Max and Rex--the dogs next door
    Cathy--my friend up the street
    Angela--Morgan's owner
    Treat
    Bath
    Bobby--another dog buddy

And probably many more that my tired brain can't think of right now.

My dogs wind up with a huge vocabulary simply because I talk to them all the time (c'mon folks -- think about it -- ME?? The one who is incapable genetically of being BRIEF???) OF COURSE they know a lot of words.  I never shut up!

So yeah, mine know all the typicals of names, things, activities -- they know all the different vet names (Billy's had a ton of vets that have helped us so Dr. D conjures a different image from Dr. B, and Dr. S is the Saturday vet, and Dr. G is the UF vet -- and beyond.).

Mine know phrases -- "Go see the kids" means pet therapy of a ton of varieties, "Go to Eastbrook" is the Alzheimer's home, but mine know a ton of individual words -- particularly ones they pair with food or fun.

"Rockin Raspberry" will bring ANYONE sailing thru the yard for yogurt

"we're all going beddytimes away" brings intense euphoria - that's FAMILY including dogs going to a motel - an ADVENTURE

"Mom and Dad are going beddytimes away" -- NOPE - not as happy a phrase because that means not going with Mom, BUT on the other paw, it means getting to play with Dr. B (who has kept Billy at his house for me) and his kids, and Luna is up for Miss Emily's Bed and Bisquit ANY time.  But it provokes a completely different response.

"You guys have to look after the house" means Mom 'n Dad are going out without them -- but it's shorter than "going to work" which is all day.  But when we're all beddytimes away then it s" You guys have to look after the room" -- so it's a concept they understand.

Vocabulary is built -- and the more you talk to them, and the more you *expect* understanding, the more you'll get it.

I think Maggie understands almost everything I say. We use 'the dog' when we were talking about Maggie, but not to her. But, she knows we are talking about her now, so she will sit and listen to us. If my mom says 'babies' then she will come running to mom, because that is what she normally uses to call us, even though the youngest kid is 14, lol.  She also knows 'ready, set, go' because I'll 'race' her from the stop sign to our house if there are no cars coming.

Cassidy and Mirelle both know each other's names. Cassidy especially, because if I'm calling for Mirelle, and she's a naughty puppy and doesn't come, I taught Cassidy to go and get her for me. So when I tell Cassidy "Go get Mirelle!" she'll run off looking for her. And when she does see Mirelle, she usually lays down where she is aand gives Mirelle 'the stare' and is ready to fetch her for me. And she'll run up to Mirelle and sometimes she grabs her by  the neck (just the fur, of course) and growls at her. It's kind of funny,  because Cassidy know Mirelle was bad for not coming and wants to correct her. But sometimes when Mirelle is actually coming to me, Cassidy will run after her and play chase too. If I say 'Cassidy' when Mirelle is around, she gets up and looks around for her [:)]

They both know "Do you want to go out?" or just the word Out. And when I tell Cassidy Find it! Or Go get your ball, rope, toy, etc she'll run around and look for it. Mirelle is starting to learn "go get your toy" too. I use a lot of phrases that aren't really commands, but they understand them. Such as  'Do you want a drink?' and "Let's go to bed' and  'What's that?' and "Are you hungry?" They'll ( Cassidy especially, since I've had her longer. Mirelle tends to follow Cassidy'e example) respond to a lot of things I say. And when we're playing fetch or something, and I will tell Cassidy "Take it to Gloria' or "Take it to Justin' or something like that, she'll go to the person so they can throw it. It might be the pointing that really directs her, but anyhow, she knows to find someone else to play when I say that. Go get 'em means to go and 'get' ( bark at or chase) the cattle, goats, or even cats at times. 'All done' means we're done playing, and she'll stop bringing the ball to me. There are more I can't think of now!

Bugsy knows a lot of words - makes me laugh sometimes because I don't realize he knows some of them.
He loves to play with a golden across the road - they have a huge tug rope.  I will tell Cody (the golden ) to go find the rope and he looks at me and smiles and comes in for a head rub.  meanwhile Bugs is off hunting down the rope which he always finds adn comes back to us ready to play
Now the ? is - is cody really smart and gets Bugs to expend the energy or does he really not understand?  We were just over there and Bugs was hunting high and low for hte rope - unfortunately it was in a cupboard and I had to get it - but he did wait outside the cupboard for me to get it [:D]  Cody was out on the grass staring into space

"Squeezer" as in the squeaky toys for example "Where is your squeezer, bring me a squeezer"
"Papa and Mama" as in "Go find Papa" "Get Mama"
I think that the dogs recognize each others names. I can tell Marley to "Go get Shaq" and she will!
"Kitty" "Treat" "Wa" (for water) "Wanna eat? "Stop licking you paws" just to name a few.

Also I think that they identify ;particular sounds as belonging to DH. DH listens to the stereo loudly, and whistles a lot. When DH is at work the dogs think he is coming home anytime a car drives by with loud music or if they hear a someone on TV whistling. They usually jump up and run to the door in that excited "Oh here comes Papa" way.

Yes, Willow knows lots of different words and phrases.  She's got her favorites like "wanna go for a ride?" and "get ready for walkies".   She knows her basics like sit, stay, come here, down, paw, two paws, play dead (and "all the way down" for when she plays dead but keeps her head up)  crawl, wait, back-up, cookie.   I also use "suppertime" and "go to bed".   I taught her "it's gentle" for when I might be doing something like wiping her face or eyes or cleaning her teeth.

She also comes running for milk and "sticks" (bully sticks).  She knows bone, "get your ball" and "where's your ball".   And, she knows us by "mama" and "papa".

She knows "want to go see Uncle John"? (the groomer) And, sometimes I just say "wanna go to "groomies"?

Wow, I guess she knows a lot. [:)

PS--Today, my husband heard me in the kitchen with a whipped cream can.  And, he asked, "can I have a "whip-it" too.  And, Willow went trotting in thinking her was calling HER because I've been calling her Willie Whip-It's for a couple of years now.  I didn't realize she figured out that was her yet.  But, I guess so.

It scares me to realize all the words and phrases Romeo understands.

I have to be careful about what I say, how I say and when I say it.  I could be talking to my mom on the phone in a separate room, and may say I am thinking about taking him to daycare, I comeout and find Romeo holding his leash doing his little I am going to go play with my friends dance.

Another one of his favorite phrases is: higaditos de pollo which means chicken livers... if he hears that in any context, he better be having some for one of his meals that day or he pouts around and refuses to eat that day.

I talk to him all the time though maybe that is why? I also sing and dance to him to which he covers his eyes, his momma dancing is not a sight Romeo appreciates. [8D]

Isn't it? and to think that there are people out there, that considers them dumb,  just because they don't articulate the way we do.
