Thanks for posting that email Jean.  I'm within a few miles of PETA headquarters and I've read about and/or witnessed all of the campaigns that he referenced, and then some.  Remember the unhappy meals?  My neighbor's young daughter had one of those handed to her when she was at a birthday party at McD's.  They routinely target children in their campaigns. I believe the key to taking down PETA starts with their tax exempt status.  I'm astounded that they still have a tax exempt status considering their association with domestic terrorist groups alone.   It's also important to remember...PETA isn't simply a group that started out "doing good" and then suddenly became extreme.  The only thing that has changed since its inception is its funding.  The current President, Ingrid Newkirk, is the only President the group has ever had and she was one of the founding members.  Her goals and the goals of the entire PETA hierarchy have always been the same as they are today.

Thanks for posting. I think most of us here realize what PETA does, but for the scads of lurkers I want to post this last message from Bill. He's having a lot of medical issues right now but I think he'll join dog.com and be here eventually. But for now here is what he has said about PETA's claims about the NC case, I think this tells it like it is:

edited to remove redundant material, Bill has joined i-dog! [:D] See his post below.

As I am New to the format and have been invited I will post a reply I sent to Jean:

Hi Jean,

Thank you for your invite to the site, I read the thread and in a day or 2 will post, feel free to post this response. I am having much medical testing the next 2 days; there are several errors in one individuals response, the one starting with I don't want to start an argument.

Some of the information that poster placed is almost verbatim what PeTA said. While there is no doubt the public shelters in the area were poor, animals were not shot the day they were brought in and in fact there was a no-kill shelter that took most of the animals, this group is the one outraged because they surrendered many animal to PeTA as a way to get more exposure for adoption and open their shelter to accommodate more animals. A new shelter has been built. PeTA contracted with the counties to provide adoption services and low cost euthanasia for animals too old or ill, after the dumping the counties stopped all PeTA contracts. The poster also implies PeTa had the right to have the drugs in NC, totally false as in NC only a licensed Vet can have or administer drugs of euthanasia. In fact the 2 PeTA employees were not even trained by required Virginia State records to assist in euthanasia, the NC Vets feel there is a high probability the larger animals suffocated to death in the garbage bags as there was no way to weigh them to prepare the proper dose.

Another error is Dr. Procter did examine one of the pups killed and found him healthy but the extensive medical necropsy was done on another pup in Philadelphia and that is the one where proof of method was discovered. The poster also speaks to charges and the being dropped, this is true as for one day the 31 felony abuse charges were dropped, they were then charged with 22 felony abuse and 3 felony obtaining property by fraud, 18 misdemeanor illegal dumping of a dead animal and trespass, PeTA has gone to court 2 times to have the abuse charges dropped and this was denied. The reason charges were lowered is after consultation by all vets they felt 9 of the animals were most likely candidates for euthanasia, but the other 22 were adoptable. The fraud charge was a brilliant move on the DA's part as animals are still "property" under the law, PeTA stood in front of undercover cops and promised homes for Jet and the kittens, thus breech of contract. PeTA took over 200 photos of them killing the animals in the van and the camera was seized. These charges and photos will be hard to deny or justify. PeTA is the one postponing the trial ever since the necropsy results were returned to the DA.

The drugs used were ketamine and pentobarbital both C-lll level narcotics, both require sign in and sign out, so there is no way PeTa did not know what was going on. Ingrid Newkirk said "we just did not notice the van coming back empty" also a lie because the law requires them to record every animal euthanized.
Dr. Procter of Ahoskie animal hospital had personal contact with PeTA headquaters and PeTA agreed he would say if an animal from his hospital was to be adopted or euthanized, that is the hospital where Jet and her 2 kittens were picked up and killed by PeTA. Another thing the poster fails to see is what "humane" euthanasia is. It is not just the method it is the circumstance. Jet (mama cat) was killed in-front of her kittens, thrown in a bag to be followed by her children, their is no humanity in killing any living being in front of their family, that does not even happen to lab animals. I understand euthanasia will always be a way to humanely kill and animal, it is not for population control or should not be.
The statement that the numbers PeTA kill is not allot considering how many animas die every year is misleading. This is only true if you fail to look at the fact a shelter less than 5 miles from PeTa headquaters in Virginia has almost the same volume as PeTA; last year PeTA killed 90.7% of their animals where the other shelter adopted out 80% of theirs; big difference. Also over the last 20 years the numbers of animals euthanized in the USA has dropped from 15 million to 5 million, certainly a move in the right direction.
I will be glad to answer any question I can from your site, I am civil and have facts not guesses. People do not know things like when Rodney Coronado of the ALF blew up the Michigan state labs, he send a film of the event to Ingrid Newkirk right after the bombing. It was intercepted by the FBI and in the FBI data Newkirks name is all over as "supporter", Coronado plead guilty and got 5 years, shortly after his confession PeTA gave him $40,000 and his father $25,000 it was not a loan and was not needed for legal defense. One has to see it was payment for a job. PeTA has "donated" money to ELF, ALF, SHAC, WAR and too many radical individuals who commit destruction to name. All this information is available using Freedom of Information Act, or Electronic freedom Of Information and that is how I got it.

Paragraph Two:

During the last four weeks I Detective Jeremy Roberts have been investigating an incident of Illegal Disposal of Dead Animals, and Animal Cruelty. The investigation started on May 19, 2005 when I was called to investigate the disposal of dead animals that were found in the trash bin behind the Piggly Wiggly grocery store. Found in the trash bin was eighteen black trash bags containing twenty one dead dogs. on June 2, 2005 I was once again contacted to investigate the illegal dumping of dead animals behind the Piggly Wiggly grocery store, that happened to be in the sane trash bin. On this date twenty black trash bags containing seventeen dogs, and three cats were found dead. On June 9, 2005 I was called for third week in a row to investigate the disposal of dead animals behind the same store in the same trash bin. On this day eighteen black trash bags containing twenty dead dogs were found in the trash bin.

Paragraph Three:

During the course of my investigation, I realized that the dead animals were being discovered on every Thursday, and that the trash bin was being dumped every Wednesday. During the investigation, I spoke with the Bertie County Animal Control Officer Barry Anderson who told me the people who work for PeTA came to the Bertie County Animal Shelter every Wednesday and picked up animals, and put them in a white van and carried them back to Virginia for adoption. I asked Berry Anderson how do they get all these animals in one small van? and he said, “that he has seen them give the animals shots to make them sleep during the trip back to Virginia”, I showed Barry Anderson the pictures of the dead animals, and he was able to recognize some of the animals as having come from his shelter.

Paragraph Four:

On June 14, 2005 after learning that the dead animals were being picked up from the Bertie Animal Shelter by PeTA employees I contacted Detective Ed Pittman with the Bertie County Sheriff Office, and asked for his help in this investigation. On this day we sent Detective Outlaw with the Bertie County Sheriff Office to the animal shelter to take picture of the animals alive and well inside the shelter. On June 15, 2005 when Peta arrived at the Bertie County Animal Shelter they were kept under surveillance by Detective Northcott, and Detective Timberlake, and Officer Ty Metzler. When the workers for PeTA had loaded up all the animals into the white van, they were followed by Detective Timberlake all the way from the animal shelter to the Red Apples in Powelsville, where they were then followed by Officer Metzler. Officer Metzler followed the white van all the way to the Piggly Wiggly grocery store were Detective Pittmart, Detective Northcott, and myself were waiting. Once the van entered the shopping center parking lot it went straight behind the Piggly Wiggly grocery store. Once the van was behind the store, the driver of the van did a U-Turn behind the store so that the side doors of the van would be on the side of the trash bin. After about fifteen seconds, the driver of the van pulled off and went back to the front of the shopping center. Once the van left, Detective Northcot, and myself went and looked in the trash bin and discovered nine black trash bags containing sixteen dead dogs. Once the white van was stopped in the parking lot by Detective Tiinberlake an additional twelve black trash bags containing seven dead dogs, and fifteen dead cats were found in the van. Also found inside the Van officers found a digital camera.

This is the sworn Probable Cause Affidavit that gave grounds to arrest the 2 PeTA employees in Ahoskie  If you can read this and not feel something is very wrong with PeTA and their "adoption" program I guess I just do not understand.

I wish to ask members to visit the free Care2.com site and consider signing my petition to show public outcry for PeTA's actions in Ahoskie NC, where 2 employees face 50 felonies, 18 misdemeanors and trespass. I understand many people are leery of effectiveness of internet petitions, this one is both on the net and in hardcopy, as well as on many breed specific sites, it has already been reviewed by the Governor and Attorney General as well as the trial DA.  It will be used at trial as a demand for equality under the law for all offenders.  PeTA demands speedy trials, max penalties and psychological evaluation for offenders, we wish the same for PeTA as they have postponed their own trial now for about 15 months. Please review the petition @ [linkhttp://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/880339575[/link] >http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/880339575]http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/880339575[/link]  Every signature adds weight to push PeTA into changing their positions on euthanasia and BSL by having their supporters see what PeTA does not wish them to see.  PeTA is a 501(c) Tax exempt group, same as your place of worship or local college, Ahoskie could be the straw that breaks PeTAs tax exempt status as a single felony conviction opens many doors for investigation.   The CCF petition to have PeTA's tax status changed is based on provable connections to domestic terrorism, it has 127,019 signatures so far.  View the petition @ [link>http://www.petakillsanimals.com/article_detail.cfm?article=154]http://www.petakillsanimals.com/article_detail.cfm?article=154[/link]  Thank You  Bill

Please forgive my ignorance, I'm not familiar with PETA or any other fascist type animal group.  We donate to our local shelters, figure best place to start is in our community.  Last year with the devastating hurricanes, SU wanted to help the animals so he sent a sizable donation to hte ASPCA.  Also, whenever I shop I doante to a charity being sponsored at the store.
Can you, please, list the "demonic" organizations to not support.  I'd feel awful if I contributed to someone who hurt animals.  Thanks.
• Gold Top Dog
Apparently there are these pounds in NC where they do not adopt out at all. If a dog is taken in, they are killed. And they do not euthanize, their method of killing is a shot to the head. PETA considered this inhumane and asked to euthanize the animals via lethal injection. Permission was granted and PETA members traveled from their headquarters in Norfolk and began euthanizing the animals.

And then there's this version of the story, from the local paper:

[linkhttp://www.roanoke-chowannewsherald.com/articles/2005/06/21/news/news3.txt]http://www.roanoke-chowannewsherald.com/articles/2005/06/21/news/news3.txt[/link]

The shelter used gas prior to 2001. AFter that time, they paid a vet to use humane injection to euthanize unclaimed pets (not immediately after intake, but after a 3-day holding period). Apparently PETA contacted them and told them that they would be attempting to find homes for some of the more adoptable pets, after which they started taking on the job of euth'ing them all, paying for the services of a specified vet. I don't know why PETA would be interested in this situation, but apparently they then used some photographs of the old facility in some public relations materials, even though they themselves paid for a new modern facility.

It's all very odd and stupid. I wish people could agree to help animals in general and not try to make other people who try to help animals look like the Bad Guy - and focus on real bad guys like dog fighters and puppymillers.
• Bronze
Sorry brookcove but I strongly disagree, PeTA is the bad guy in this case.   Regardless of what another shelter may have done somewhere in NC that is not the issue nor is PeTA's history. I would also be quite leery of anything PeTA said. I know of one county that used shooting as their euthanasia method, we gathered forces and opened a no-kill shelter in that community and that was well over 10 years ago. I agree shooting and gassing are both unacceptable but in their own hypocrisy PeTA gave its Person Of the Year award to Dr. Nigel Binns for inventing a gas chamber mouse trap that e-mails you when the mouse is dead.      [link>http://www.peta.org/campaigns/2005poty.asp]http://www.peta.org/campaigns/2005poty.asp[/link] I am not taking any pro-mouse or anti-mouse stance, but if PeTA is as they say, for all animals, why is it only the cute ones garnish their attention.  Gassing by CO is horrible, it is not at all like CO2, so if gas is wrong for dogs it also should be for rodents; personally if I was a mouse, the old whack on the head would be far more humane that seizing to death. PeTA did not build a new facility in Ahoskie and I am not sure where you got that, the new facility was built with private donations PeTA had nothing to do with it. [link>http://www.vancnews.com/articles/2005/11/09/warrenton/news/news01.txt]http://www.vancnews.com/articles/2005/11/09/warrenton/news/news01.txt[/link] Facts are PeTA made weekly visits to pick up animals by contract to be taken back to Virginia to be evaluated by a vet, this did not happen; PeTA illegally killed animals in the van in NC, hundreds of animals and then threw them in of all places, a grocery store trash bin; public health must also not be a PeTA concern.   Humane and appropriate are ludicrous words to use as PeTA did.  If you have ever taken a loved animal to be humanely put down did you take its litter mates to watch  (?) of course not, but PeTA did just that.  They had no contract to kill in NC, no license to carry the drugs in NC, no training to euthanize; all violations of NC law.  They left a tackle box full of narcotics open to anyone who wished to steal it, they lied when caught injecting animals and they totally breeched the service contract they had with the counties.   They provided no vet evaluation nor even a single chance for adoption, the animals never even made it to Virginia.  Would it be OK for them to come to your neighborhood and pick up your animal if it was loose?  ;PeTA is notorious for doing that and then killing the animal, why else would they have treats in a van if not to lure animals? PeTA in my opinion does very little for dogs and cats, they are strongly in favor of BSL and eradication of feral cat communities, for cats they are against TNR.  They want all breeding of dogs and cats to stop and pet ownership is to be mandated to only stray animals. They feel service dog use should stop; as I am totally medically disabled with a service dog I find that quite offensive.  Norman my Shepard is my best friend and I could not manage without him, he loves his work as much as we love each other. I feel he agrees our partnership benefits both of us, I rescued him from maternal parvo by paying the $700.00 medical bill to save his life; I guess he paid me back. Just like how PeTA solicited money after Katrina, if you do the research you find the total number of animals they took in was 32; 5 were united with their owners.  All other involvement PeTA has was animal referrals for other agencies to take them in. He are these facts from PeTA itself [link>http://www.helpinganimals.com/f-rescueddogs.asp]http://www.helpinganimals.com/f-rescueddogs.asp[/link] .Sadly in my opinion saving 32 animals is a poor showing for a 29 million dollar a year animal group. All I wish is responsibility, PeTA messed up big time and to deny it happened, then use peoples donated money as bail is reprehensible.  If PeTA would have said from day one we did not approve of our employees actions this would be a different story, but all PeTA said was the dumping in the trash was wrong but the killing were appropriate and humane, to that I say BULL.

I had a friend in the mid-80s who got involved with PeTA - at least the anti-fur business and became a vegan because of it.  She constantly sent me the pamphlets, recipes, etc., but I was so turned off by the radical info in the pamphlets that I began dreading getting mail from her.  We are no longer friends.

Is it just me or did anybody notice that the "e" in PeTA is lower case?  As if the word ethical wasn't important.......

Yes, I can assure you that despite putting up with fences and leashes, not to mention being spayed at only five months old, I have overcome the stigma of being a pet dog and have no desire for suicide.

I find that long walks and chicken jerky are good therapy for any dogs that don't like being pets.  If you feel like being back to your natural roots, I recommend grabbing a stick (rather than a sock) and running to let both the canine and human pack chase you. Yes, I do have my work. My mom is sort of absent minded and I have to find my own leash and I also have to find the car keys. My work keeps me fulfilled and my mom keeps my belly filled.

My mom read Call of the Wild, and says that in a different time, I'd have gone North. But I like it here, although an occasional visit to the snow does stir my blood.

I am personally willing to concede that all I'll ever be is a pet, enslaved to humans. To my doggie brain, I think I may have lucked out. I'm mixed breed and half Chow at that. Most of us don't live to old age. But....they don't commit suicide. They are killed because they aren't wanted. Every one of them would choose my enslaved life.

Sorry PeTA. You don't speak for me.
