Um, I taught my cat to sit

I'm not kidding, I actually taught my cat to sit on command. Tonight I decided to make some homemade dog treats that someone had posted the recipe on this board (2 cups wheat flour and a can of ground dog food) and while the first batch was cooking I grabed a piece of uncooked and told Sport to sit (and of course he did!!) and then I thought "why am I making my dog sit to get his treat but all this cat has to do is stand there?" so I told the cat to sit and held the treat above his head, and HE SAT!!!! It was sooo funny that I kept doing it with tiny pieces and now i just look at him and say "sit" and he does!!! And to prove it, I even took a picture.

So cool I didn't think it could be done I am sending this link to my daughter in law.
By the way that is one cute kitty.

[sm=clapping%20hands%20smiley.gif] That is cool!  I have myself wondered why dogs get trained and cats just get to lay around lol.  Reminds me of that quote: "Dogs have masters, cats have staff."

    Well done!

I've heard that cats are as smart if not smarter than dogs and can pick up on tricks really fast, but I've never tried to train one myself. I think people have the same philosophy about cats as they do small dogs, for some reason they just dont think to train them. I'm not saying everyone thinks that way by the way, because I know there are a lot of responsible small dog owners here who try very hard to train their small dogs to have very good manners!!!
Of course, it always helps to have a species confused cat, for example,,,my kitty has decided the kong is not just for the dog lol. And yes, he was actually rolling it around and licking it trying to get the hotdog out[sm=lol.gif]

That is awesome, can you come teach my cats to sit?? LOL  [:D]

I have yet to be able to teach them anything I have ever tried in 10 years (except perhaps how to become more defiant of their owner!)

Mine also love the kong toys and every day when I leave for work I give each dog 4 different shaped Kongs with all their favorite stuff in it. The dogs LOVE when it is Kong time and it eases the stress of me leaving. The cats have figured out that lamb lungs and liver treats are 2 of the items I put in the kongs so now every morning  I am surrounded by 2 cats and 2 dogs watching me stuff the kongs. If I turn my back for a second, the cats will try and grap a kong and run for it with dogs chasing behind them!

That is wonderful...I wonder if you can train them to stay off tables with the word "off."  Mine never caught on.

Actually, this is the second cat I've owned and both of them dont get up on the table and counters. I dont even know how we taught them to stay off the tables and counters,,,I guess it was just repition with taking them off and telling them no every time they jumped up on them. A lot of times I think it also depends on the cats personality, both of the cats I've owned have acted more like dogs than cats, it's strange.

I think cats in Muskegon must be very different creatures from California cats. . . In 10 years I can't keep them off the counters and table either! What is wrong with them! Can I ship them, to train with you?  [sm=rofl.gif]

Ahh, the fun of cat obedience.  Mine knows sit, shake, high-five, "say please" and I'm trying to teach her to jump through a hoop.  She won't jump over her height.  *sigh*  Yay for people who have too much time on their hands.  *cheers*  Someone should definately cash in on the idea of a "kitty kong"  lol.

kitty kong, huh?  Would stuffing them with catnip be cruel? [:D]

Hahahaha, are your cats strictly indoor cats? I think that might be the difference here, both of our cats so far are inside/outside cats and I think they know that they can climb and claw outside but not inside. A cat naturally wants to jump and climb, and if it can't get outside to do that in it's natural environment then I guess it will make due with what it has (your counter for example!!). That's just my theory anyhow, I could be completely off but so far it's proven true with our cats.

And I think we should patent (sorry if I spelled that wrong) that kitty kong idea, that way when all these big animal companies want to create one they'll have to pay us MILLIONS!!!!!!

[sm=clapping%20hands%20smiley.gif]Definately! and I love the idea of the catnip filled kongs. . .I think I am going to have to try it. .  .just to drive them nuts! One of my cats is seriously dumber than a box of rocks- he is  absolutely gorgeous and people fawn all over him, but he has no brains. The other is a complete problem solver and can get into almost anything despite how much engineering you do to keep him out of it. They are both indoor only cats so I guess he has plenty of time on his hands to figure things out! He has got the brains in some areas but when it comes to simple things like...oh...eating for survival lets say he has no common sense. Rather than eat cat food or fish or anything cats should like, he goes out of his way to get to a bag of  flaming hot cheetos or salsa or anything that a cat shouldn't seek out to eat.

If nothing else i can say they are entertaining. .  .congrats to all of you who have taught your cat some commands and even tricks..i am in awe! [;)]

LOL.. love it.. one of my cats will respond to the dog commands, too - "sit" & "speak". The dogs are in absolute shock not when the cat complies (first), but when the CAT gets a treat before they do! Next on the agenda- teaching the dogs how to meow. If treats are going up in price, then so are the tricks!! [;)]

How cool.  I'll have to teach my cat to sit.  He is pretty stubborn and not much of a treat eater.  He did learn how to ring the bell to go outside.  He likes to sit on the patio chairs and bird watch so i let him out in back yard sometimes.  He is very vocal and mommy hates that so he doesnt always get his way when he screams.  He figured out that the puppy gets to go outside when he rings a bell, so guess who rings the bell now?  It's funny and cute....except at 0400.
My cats dont get on counters or tables, with the exeption of the bathroom counter.  He sleeps in my sink.
