when your dog gets excited does he/she

    smell?
Molly does - I mean she reeks.
Took her with us tonight to do some errands and she got all wired up going for a ride with her mom and dad. Bouncing off the walls, forgetting she has to sit and stay when the door is open (although she came back in and got a reminder).
In the car she reeked...we had to open the windows she smelled so bad. The smell is embedded in my nostrils.
We've noticed that with her before and another dog we had used to do the same thing. Sadie was so laid back she didn't do that.

I've never heard of such a thing. My dogs don't smell any different when they're excited than they do when they're calm.

My dog doesn't do this, but I bet what you're describing is she expresses her anal glands when she's excited. Some dogs do....

ditto on the anal glands. Dogs expresses their anal glands where they get excited or get scared. It stinks to high heavens and it's hard to get the smell out of your nose once you smell it.

So, perhaps it mitght be better to go to the Vet.. When the anal glands are "full" or they can't express them normally- the Vet can help and squezze it out- takes 5 minutes.

Don't waite too long if it's the anal glands, don't want them to rupture.  A groomer can also do the squeez thing if you prefer to go there instead.

You seem to be missing the fact that if indeed this is anal glands, they are expressing JUST fine.....just at an inappropriate time for the owners.

Another thought is that your dog could be quietly "passing wind" (aka farting).  My friend had a Rott that would do that when he got excited. Giving him a charcoal tablet or biscuit when he was excited helped.  Glenda, good point about the anal glands expressing themselves!  [:)]

no it's not a fart....it does smell like anal glands (a familiar smell known even with fostering cats).
I'm assuming since there is the odor when she's excited she's expressing them just fine and no check is needed.
Some time ago we did have her glands checked cause she had that odor (while excited) and vet said her anal glands were fine.
So I'm going with the assumption she's expressing on her own (what an expressive way to show excitement [8D]) and doesn't need to have them checked.
I have added some frozen veggies to her kong as of today - peas and carrots. I always added slices of apples (and she nibbles on slices during the evening too) but I think she might need veggies along with the apples.

oh and they are organiz frozen veggies

Mary, I think that's common to that particular litter.  Two of the boys did the exact same thing.  and, man, that IS an odor that just keeps on giving![:'(]

Ugh. I'm sympathising. Conrad also expresses his glands a little too well, though not when he's excited fortunately. Just, well, kind of randomly. We'll all be sitting around and then we'll catch that odor and hear the lick lick lick of Conrad giving his hiney a good scrubdown. It's seriously nasty. I've tried to find kibble with higher fiber to see if we can't make it so that when he poops his glands really empty instead of having leftovers to deal with later. So far, it just kind of seems hit or miss though.

A couple weeks ago he was in his crate when it happened and after he got finished with his licking, he got up and moved into Marlowe's crate. Even he couldn't take the stench.

In the link I posted above there is some helpful advice from a vet on how to get rid of the odor --

Certainly a diet high in roughage will aid compression of anal sacs. Many dogs when excited will spontaneously express their anal sacs, considered normal. And there are commercial products to aid in covering or reducing the anal sac odor.

The most efficient product available to remove the odor is simple ethanol, methanol or isopropyl alcohol. Careful when using any alcohol (I would suggest a dilution of isopropyl on a gauze pad) simply because it can irritate any sensitive skin. Blot the area lightly and gently.
