Yay! I love to watch dogs have fun together, I hope Gingerbread & Cinnabun will be the best of friends.

Having their ears cleaned, being bathed, being blowdried, having nails clipped... these are all things that dogs are not born being okay with. They have to become socialized and accustomed to those things, and the best way is slowly. Fortunately, because he is so young, still in his optimum socialization period, and small enough that he doesn't need full-on grooming yet, you can get him used to these things slowly. You don't have to do a full bath, for example. Just place him in the sink/tub, give him treats, and take him out. Next time place him in the tub, turn on the water but don't get him wet, give treats, take him out. And so on. For the ears, just handle them many times a day and flood him with treats (or whatever floats his boat), without cleaning. Nails, same deal - just handle his paws many times a day without clipping. Car - take it slow also. Put him in the car, treat/praise, take him out. Turn it on but don't go anywhere, treat/praise, take him out. Go around the block, same deal. You get the picture. Good luck! Luvntzus, I don't think he's a scaredy dog either.  I think he's an alpha brat.  (that's MY terminology).  When a dog is the alpha and either he's not allowed to be with Mom and sibs enough for THEM to bat each other around to say "hey, quit it!" or particularly if the Mom isn't around enough to instill any sort of discipline, a dog learns exactly what he's learned.  If he pitches a royal fit (and he's a small dog so just being obstinant doesn't work -- he can't just 'balk' and win .. he has to make himself SO incredibly miserable that the humans 'back away') whatever he did last that made someone stop doing what he didn't like HE WINS.

Maybe this has been covered before -- and maybe it's something you have to work up to -- but my guess is now that you have two dogs who are beginning to socialize, you can use your relationship with Gingerbread to get TO Cinnebun.  "nothing in life is free" -- Google the following phrase:

"Nothing In Life Is Free" dog training

Now a lot of that is geared to bigger dogs, because unfortunately often people don't bother to TRAIN small dogs.  They tend to give in to them, give them whatever makes them 'cute' again and let it go.  But the principals all still apply -- and when you have TWO dogs it can work even better on the 'brat'.

"Oh Gingerbread ... what a NICE sit -- here, have a piece of apple!" (or whatever small benign treat you can find -- even Cheerios work great!!)

Ignore Cinnebun until he will do what you ask (at that one time).  But most of all -- don't engage Cinnebun in any THING where you "can't win".  In other words -- if Cinnebun won't come when called then let him drag a leash 24/7.

Keep everything 100% totally consistent.  But absolutely as much as possible don't let yourself be put in a situation where HE wins.  If Cinnebun complains about a leash then let it just be a long length of ribbon.  But you can 'stomp' on it if he goes where you don't want him to go.  But even if he does scream don't let him 'win' at that behavior.

It takes the patience of a saint but you're doing a GOOD job!!!

I used to work at a grooming shop.  You could always tell which dogs ran the house (always the small ones) by how much they screamed over a touch of a brush - literally - it was like an on/off switch.  The groomer would always tell the owners to work with the dog at home, so that the next grooming appointment wouldn't be so tramatic - but very rarely did the customer ever "make" the dog do anything it didn't want.

Like everyone else said, I think she learned before you had her, that screaming was the way to get people to stop doing things she didn't like.  You'll have to teach her otherwise or keep her shaved[:o].

Please consider checking this book out.  NILIF misses a few pieces for little dogs - Deborah Wood lays out a course of action that is geared just for the little guys.  When I got Zhi, she had to be groomed every day and she was a demon!  It took two of us to brush her - forget shaving her face.  Now she stands quietly for a compete grooming, with no restraint.  I'm not the world's greatest trainer - I just needed a few hints from this book to help me understand how to best get into Zhi's head.

RE: the car screaming, are you sure he is not getting car sick.  April has always gotten car sick so the only time she goes in the car is to the vet and for grooming.  She stays at home, otherwise.  Once a year we take her on a longer trip at which time we give her dramimine.  But she does not like the car, never has, never will.  I've tried the short trips, etc. all the suggestions and it never made a difference, she actually hyperventilates in the car.

Glad to hear this news!  We are keeping treats in our pockets.  After she gets tail cleaned or ears, COOKIE.   I'm using cookie to lure her down the stairs to go outside.

YAY FOR YOU, CINNABUN & GINGERBREAD!!! [sm=clapping%20hands%20smiley.gif]

I know you've still got a rough road ahead but having all of these small victories make it worth it!  I hope Gingerbread and Cinnabun continue to play around the house.

I don't have any advice for the screaming.... eventually, Gracie grew out of it.  She howled and screamed if I walked outside without her, if she was outside and couldn't get in (doggie door wide open but she wanted me to open up the front door for her highness to walk through lol)  or if she just wanted attention.  Gradually, it faded because she knew it wasn't helping her.  Hope things keep going well!  Good job!!! Colton was a car screamer too.  Ear peircing screams.  I kept him in crate, and covered it with a towel to help.  The biggest thing is not to give him what he wants in situations like this.  Eventually, Colton stopped his car and bath screaming.

I'm going to try covering his crate with a towel. Thanks for the suggestion!

It's definitely possible... the only thing that makes me think it isn't car sickness, is that he does the same screaming behavior for everything else he doesn't like. [&:]

*lol* I knew you would get attached!

Congrads on deciding to keep him, I know it will be a lot of work but you will have a terrific dog to show for it. I am glad that Cinn and Ginger are getting along now, that is wonderful.

Congrads again, and us I-doggers will always be here.

I dont have any advice for the screaming but I would definantly start NILIF...
