Ever notice submissive urination is common among smaller breeds? Because they're so low to the ground, humans who come rushing over, lean over them, and lunge down to pet or pick them up can be very intimidating. You don't see a lot of submissive-urinating Labs, but then people don't tend to greet Labs by swooping them into the air. [

Russell is a submissive urinator. He still hasn't grown out of it at 16mo but he has made a lot of progress. We try to be really on top of having people approach him the right way, particuarly when they come into our house: don't make direct eye contact (at least not for a while), don't loom, don't reach your hand over his head, don't pick him up. It's best if people walk right by him, sit or crouch down, let him approach, still do not make eye contact, and pet him by reaching
under his head to scratch behind his ears or on his chest.
