Peeing when excited (wasn't sure where to post...)

Sorry, didn't know where I should post this...

Daisy has been peeing herself when she gets overly excited.  Whenever we are on our walk and she meets someone new she pees, if I have someone over she pees.  Even the other day when she saw me for the first time after she was kenneled, she peed. Its kind of embarrassing because people pick her up and she pees all over them.  I now know that it is a problem so I am not letting anyone pick her up right away, giving her a moment to pee on the ground![:)]
I just want to know if anyone else has had this problem before & if it is something she will grow out of (she is 4 months old now).  Is there anything that I can do to help her be able to hold herself???

    Thanks in advance!

We had a basset that submissively peed - but I'm not sure if this is the same as you're experiencing - I did find this looking for info:

I've got a friend whose dachsund pees whenever anyone comes over. We've always called it submissive urination, but I'm not sure that that's accurate. It's pretty gross and embarassing for my friend. One day I actually got hit in the face! [:'(] The only way she can get him not to pee is for people to ignore him for a few minutes when they first walk in the house. He seems to calm down then and won't pee if you pet him.

My grandma's two cockers always peed when they were excited when they were puppies. What lokis_mom suggested is good, getting people to ignore her when they come in and only pet her when she's calm. But, at 4 months old she won't have that good of bladder control, so it shouldn't stick for her whole life.

Madi had the problem when she was a puppy.  The trainer told us to keep moving when saying hello after a long day.  I would walk in circles, side to side,  any direction until I made it to the back yard.  Then if she widdled when we said hi we were outside.  The trick is to keep moving until they go.  This goes for everyone until they learn to hold it.  I still do this and she is now 8. I get home from work, she is passed out on the couch, she sees me, runs over, a little slower now day but she run over , and I go in circles until we make it outside.  Then I get full hugs.  Just a habit now but it works for us.  Good luck.

Dugan had this problem when he was about Daisy's age too. He outgrew it. Just keep paper towels with you and remind people that she potties when she's excited, so don't pet her or pick her up until she's calm.

Ever notice submissive urination is common among smaller breeds? Because they're so low to the ground, humans who come rushing over, lean over them, and lunge down to pet or pick them up can be very intimidating. You don't see a lot of submissive-urinating Labs, but then people don't tend to greet Labs by swooping them into the air. [;)]

Russell is a submissive urinator. He still hasn't grown out of it at 16mo but he has made a lot of progress. We try to be really on top of having people approach him the right way, particuarly when they come into our house: don't make direct eye contact (at least not for a while), don't loom, don't reach your hand over his head, don't pick him up. It's best if people walk right by him, sit or crouch down, let him approach, still do not make eye contact, and pet him by reaching under his head to scratch behind his ears or on his chest.

[:'(] Arthur does the same thing but only to my daughter-in-law. We have told her when she comes in the house to make him sit before greeting him but either she wont  tell or Arthur wont listen so inevitablely he pees everywhere. I think its because he only sees her once in a while that he want to give her something to remember him by. LOL She doesnt think its funny. hehe
