    Advice re: boarding/kenneling

I could use some decision-making help here.

On the 8th of September I have my first appointment with my new specialist, who is in London.  We won't be gone overnight and there are a couple of options for Ben's care during the day.  1) My SO will take me, and my father will come over and look after Ben.  2) My father will take me to London, and Ben will be alone for the morning, let out and played with at lunch by my SO, and then alone for the afternoon until SO gets home from work.  Either way I am unlikely to get back before early evening.  The third option is kenneling Ben for the first time for the day.  That isn't strictly necessary because as you can see there are other options, but.....

My current (or now previous I suppose) specialist said that my new specialist's MO when he gets a referral case like mine is to put the patient (me) in the hospital and run every test known to man so that he gets a complete medical picture.  That means I am very likely going to be hospitalised in London.  If I am, my SO will of course want to be with me...and it's too far to commute every day, not to mention lethally expensive.  My SO can come to London with me and stay with some family I have there, and work in his company's London office, but that means he's not at home to take care of Ben.  His suggestion is to kennel Ben when I go for my first appointment, so that if I DO end up being hospitalised then at least Ben will have spent some time at a kennel already.  My father CAN look after Ben while I'm in the hospital, and they adore each other, but I am wondering if it might not be time to introduce Ben to kennels.  Not because I am planning on making a habit of kenneling him, but I know there are going to be times in the next year when he will have to be.

The thing is, I will need to make this decision BEFORE going for the first appointment, and thus before I know whether I will be going into the hospital at all.

Is Ben too young, or would it be good for him?  He'll be 5 months by the time the appointment rolls around.

    Opinions?

He's not too young.  If Ben was in Canada, he would have all his vaccinations by now.   We started kenneling our Labs at a young age too...then they became accustomed to it.

Ben's a healthy, well-adjusted dog, right?  If so, I'd kennel him.  I think you'll worry less, and then you can focus on your health and not be fussing about changing Ben's arrangements or wondering if your dad is able to look in on him.

I find that it's reassuring to have a kennel I and the dog both like, and where all his paperwork already is on file.  That way, if I have an unexpected trip or something I know that a good option is available.  A short visit will lay the groundwork for that without stressing the dog too much.

It sounds like part of the problem here is the uncertainty of knowing whether you'll be away overnight -- have you considered calling the new doc and exlaining the situation?  Maybe they would give you a better idea of what to expect and how long you'll likely be in London.

I don't read the OT areas so I don't know if you've posted before about your medical issues, but I just wanted to add that I hope it's not anything serious and that you get well soon.

    Thank you both.

I wasn't really clear in my original post, sorry.  I will almost certainly NOT be put in the hospital when I get there for my first appointment, because the doctor will probably give me a chance to come home and pack a bag.  So I won't be staying overnight on the 8th, it will be sometime after that.  If I kennel Ben the day of the first appointment, he'd just be there for the day.

I'm going to call my vet, and see if she can recommend a good kennel.

And Acesmom - we don't really have any idea WHAT it is.  This will be my third specialist in a year, but the guy is supposed to be the be-all and end-all in his field, so we're hoping he will have some answers.  Thank you.

    Hey Kate,

I had to go away last weekend and for the first time there was no family around to take care of Daisy & Duke (4 months & 1 1/2 years).  I had to kennel them.  I searched for a really good kennel and found one.  They were totally fine!  Actually they did so good that I would leave them again if I had to.  I think that it was harder on Duke because this was his first time  and he is 1 1/2 years old.  Apparently Daisy was just amazing!

Good luck and I hope that you can get some answers from this specialist!  Keep us updated!

Also, did you say in one of your other posts that you are moving to British Columbia???  Where abouts are you moving to?  I live on Vancouver Island.
