    chew-proof dog beds

does anyone know of a dog bed that is chew proof or at least very chew resistant?

sydney has chewed up almost every bed we have put in his crate. we have bought inexpensive ones and fairly expensive ones, and all have the same result. he rips them open and pulls out the stuffing. my wife repaired a few of them and he ripped them  open again. we tried putting an old comforter in there and it lasted a little while and then he ripped it open. we a couple of fleece throws in with him and they have lasted for a while, but they dont offer much padding. plus he is ripping strips off of them. we tried putting a small piece of carpet in with him to give him some padding, but he is starting to chew the corners off of it.

we want him to be as comfortable as possible in his crate, but we also dont want to go broke replacing his beds either. we thought once he was done teething he would stop, but he hasnt. he isnt quite a year old yet. we think he will be about a year old in late october or early november. any chances he might stop chewing the beds at a year old?

Cast iron skillets seem to work pretty well.....

Seriously, I haven't found anything that's unshredable, to an able shredder. Emma did settle down, somewhere around a year and a half, and stop shredding her bedding. I ended up buying a bunch of cheap, fleece blankets, and letting her shred them. I washed the shreds, when they were dirty, and threw them back into her crate. Now that she's a big girl, she has a real bed. It has to be washable, since she's incontinent, but she's not so into shredding.

Do you want a BED like a squishy one? Kuranda dog hammock style beds are supposedly close to indestructible. Just google Kuranda...they are pricey but I know Beagle folks that've had theirs, outlive the dogs!

Is there a reason you need commercial bedding in a crate?  I just use old flannel sheets, blankets, bathrobes, etc.  The dog doesn't know the difference between that and a "dog bed," and since you can't really see into the crate anyway it doesn't matter that the bedding's not pretty.  That way, if he chews on the bedding it's no big deal.

we just wanted something soft for him to lay on. amelia has a bed in her crate and she has never chewed it. we just wash it once in a while and put more fill in when it starts getting flat.

rwbeagles - will those kuranda beds fit inside a crate?

BTW: both our dogs have wire crates and you can see inside them. [;)]

I can definitely sympathize with you. Loki doesn't completely destroy the bedding in his crate, but he does chew holes in anything we put in there for him--and has since he was little. We thought he'd grow out of it, and he has calmed down, but he still chews his blankets.

I don't have a good solution, but what we do is buy cheaper blankets (Walmart has some good sized blankets for $3-4 a piece) and just switch them out when he's chewed it all up.

Odin doesn't chew his blanket, but for some reason when they're out of their crates, he likes to go into Loki's and chew his blankets. Weird dogs! [:D]

We have these for our guys and we love them!! Our guys are not big chewers but we liked the idea of the dogs being up off the ground.  I will put pads and blankets on them which make them pretty comfy.

Here is Dasher on his bed (please excuse the ribbons, we had just gotten back from a trial and I was bragging [:D]):

None of our Border collies like soft things in their crates except for long rides in the car in the winter (and sometimes not even then). I finally stopped fighting it, and went for rubber instead of cloth. I get the utility matting that they make for truck beds, shop floors, or horse trailers, and cut it to fit the crates. There's a brand name called [linkhttp://www.groupsummit.com/bulldog.html]Bulldog mats[/link] but if you shop around you can find similiar generic brands. I can get the smaller roll for $40 at my feed and seed store, and I get enough out of it to line several large crates.

They don't pull it or try to move it aside, and I've only had a couple dogs who tried to gnaw the edges. Since it's kind of like laying on a kong, they don't get far. [;)] It's also easy to clean and disinfect regularly (a big plus since I feed raw).

ETA: Those Kuranda beds are really cool. I thought they were more expensive than that for some reason.

They have a guarantee on their tough chew beds. if your dog can chew through it, they will refund your money.

Wow, those look great. They're expensive, but if they work that would be worth it!

You could go to Goodwill and pick up some old comforters inexpensively.
