what are some petco bones or any pet store bones your dogs like? Also what size dog do u have

I have german shepherds, and they get NO bones unless they are raw from the butcher.

ANY heat changes the molecular structure of bones and makes them more brittle and more prone to splintering.  ANY bones that you find on the shelf of any store are in someone treated either chemically or with heat, and they just flat are NOT safe.

The  only "bones" I get from petstores are the CET type chews you can get from the vet.  They look like rawhide but they are not the same.  They are good for their teeth and are "suppossed" to be safe for them.  I have small dogs but good chewers so I get the largest ones they have.

I give my dogs Cornstarch bones, they're made from cornstarch but feel rock hard.  It keeps them busy for a while & cleans their teeth, I supervise so they don't choke.  I'm lucky, my dogs are chewers, not inhalers.  I also give frozen marrow bones (frozen raw), it's their ice cream.  I have a GSD/Rott mix & a GSD.

Do NOT get those "treated" real bones from the pet stores. Those are cooked, and dangerous! And besides that, they are just crawling with bacteria. My vet says they are awful.

Sofia has a pressed rawhide bone that she doesn't chew. No, instead, she plays Toss the Toy with it, and toss and fetch, and Kill It! (pounce pounce pounce).

Okay, she's weird. I admit it.

Raw bones are all she gets that she actually chews. Bones with marrow give her diarrhea so she doesn't get many of those. Mostly she'll get a whole frozen chicken thigh. The frozen part keeps her chewing up the bone instead of swallowing big bits whole.

    Sofia is about 50 lbs.

we get nylabones. right now they each have about 4 different ones in their crates. they have a wishbone each (chicken flavor i think), a regular one (the new chocolate flavor), and a dental one (double action chew). sydney has a durable knot also. it has lasted quite a while. amelia may only have three right now. i cant think of what her 4th one is. she used to have one of the galileo bones, but i think we threw it out.

all the ones they have are not really chewable. they can gnaw off tiny slivers, but big pieces dont come off.

why would petco sell a dog bone that is not safe? Wouldnt they get sued for doing something like that?

I'm sure I heard somewhere a story about someone whose dog ate a nylabone and it splintered in the dog's gut. Is that an urban myth, or based on fact?

Things that aren't safe get sold all the time. Greenies are indigestible and have killed a bunch of dogs. But they are sooooo popular! I can't even get local Fairbanks sled dog stores to stop selling them.[:@]

Just because something is out there for sale somewhere doesn't mean it's safe!!! No one is really checking every item even for humans, not to mention for dogs!

BUYER BEWARE! You have to figure stuff out for yourself. That's why this is such a good place to come. We get to pool our knowledge. [:)]

How  can they sell stuff that isn't safe?  It makes them MONEY.  Many folks are squeamish about RAW bones, or don't wan the "mess".....so they smoke or treat the bones and JQP feels good about giving a "safe" bone.......

How can they still sell Celebrex when it's known to cause strokes in some folks?  How can they still sell guns when they are known to be the weapon of choice in murders?  How can they still sell alcohol when it's the cause of so many accidents?

Just because something is on the market, doesn't mean it's SAFE.

My vet gave me some Cheweez samples that my dogs loved.  Are they not safe, either?  My vet gave them to me, but that is a vet that I stopped going to for other reasons----so now I am concerned about the Cheweez.

They sell tons of Rawhide bones, and those are terrible for your dog.  Same with Greenies.

never heard that one before. nylabone makes two types of bones: ones that can be eaten ([linkhttp://www.nylabone.com/default.aspx?pageid=50]edible[/link]) and ones that cannot ([linkhttp://www.nylabone.com/default.aspx?pageid=62]non-edible[/link]). the ones we get cant really be eaten unless they swallow it whole, and we get ones that are too big for that. maybe it was one of the edible types?

They continue to sell unsafe products b/c the public demands it.  Think about it, most people are NOT willing to fight off a cold by sweating it out, they want it gone yesterday = convenience!  We live in a convenient society.
If people aren't even willing to walk their dogs, are they going to clean up after a raw bone mess?

My experience with nylabones was good, but I'm lucky that my dogs are chewers, not gulpers.  They get an edible nylabone periodically as a treat, we monitor them.  The artificial ones we started using b/c of teething.  Once they chewed the knuckles off the ends, we replaced w/ a new one.  They're not interested anymore, they prefer their raw knuckle bones.
