    Not so interested in eating?

I had originally posted this in nutrition, but got responses that I wasn't happy with like..."take it away every time he doesn't want it and by the time he's really hungry he'll eat it...or, change his kibble, a year is a long time to feed the same food"  Those are definitely not from the people whom I was hoping could answer my question!!!!

Cooper has recently started to not be interested in his food.  A few weeks ago we attributed it to the heatwave and figured the remainder of the bag went bad when he flat out refused to eat while crated with the bowl.  Now he will eat, but will not finish the entire 1 1/2 cups, but will only do so with company.  If you walk away, he will walk away.  This morning I had him sit, gave him the okay and I laid down on the couch, he walked away from the bowl and laid down in front of the couch.  There is nothing wrong with him, he'll eat anything else, he'll play as usual, no bathroom issues, he's just suddenly finicky or something.

Anyone have any ideas as to what is wrong?

Oh, its Nutro Natural Choice Large Breed Adult...which is what we've been feeding him since switching over a year ago from their Large Breed Puppy.  Also, he gets 1 1/2 cups in the morning and 1 1/2 cups at night.  No part of our routine has changed either, still the same amount of activity, same schedule, etc.

I'm not sure how we can help if you don't like the answers.

My dogs eat what they are fed, when they are fed or they go without.  Thor and Sheba have been on Innova for over two years, and the younger boys have been on it their entire lives, BUT, they also get homecooked or raw for dinner and no two pots are ever exactly the same.  So they do get plenty of variety.

I don't think dogs get tired of foods like humans do, but the WDJ does recommend rotating food so that if food A is high in one subtance, they don't get too much of it built up, and by the same token if it is low in another, switching is likely to correct that as well.  They actually recommend switching 3-4 times per year.

So other than trying tough love or another kibble, I'm not sure what we CAN suggest.

Well, heres my advice mom to mom of a dog who also drives me crazy with eating.  But, I have seemed to have figured this out finally, LOL.

First thing I'd do is just make sure theres nothing going on with him.  I know a lot of people will say it's behavioral.  But, Willow was fussy but not THAT fussy if you know what I mean.  And, without any other symptoms at all I finally insisted the vet draw blood.  She did it to humor me more than anything because it didn't seem anything was wrong.  But, guess what. . .I know this dog and I was right. . .she had a low white blood cell count.  Anyway, after they treated that she started eating again!  But, that's not my first time with her not eating, we've had her into the ER and everything when we first got her.  I was told every time that it was behavioral.  But, in the back of my mind, I never really believed it was ALL behavioral.

Anyway, sorry to go off with that. . .but here are some other things I've done with great success.

Walk and play before feeding, no treats and I've also found Evangers canned Hunk of Beef and Wysong Beef or Turkey Au Jus to be her favorite stuff and she'll always eat if it's included.  And, she NEVER ate dog food straight but the Au Jus she will.  They have others too like duck, venision, etc.  But, I don't buy that stuff so can't comment on if it would work as well as the others.  I also will skip a meal now and then and just give her a bully stick.  If you give raw bones you could do that instead.

I know a lot of people here don't like the Dog Whisperer show.  But, a few weeks ago I saw an interesting segment on dogs not eating.  And, he was saying how it can be very behavioral if we are humanizing them too much as in not exercising them enough and stimulating that desire to work for food.  Then they are bored and lazy and not hungry enough to eat.  He made a comment that stuck with me, "dogs will eat anything". . .I'm guilty of that, I treat her like my princess child.

    Anyway, hope this helps.

Oh, its Nutro Natural Choice Large Breed Adult...

First, I must confess I spoil my Madi.  She has always been a picky eater and I will do what ever I can to make sure she eats....so...

Madi use to eat the same food (red bag?).  I keep her food inside a large tupperware tub, then put her bowls on top the tub for her to eat.  I noticed if she did not eat up all the food within 2 months, she would get an upset tummy with the last bit.  How are you storing the food?

Then Madi was diagnosed with a liver problem.  I changed her to the Natural Nutro.  It is more holistic and is working much better. Her liver counts are now down to below 200! Conpared to the previous 480+. The food you are serving has white rice in the mixture, the Natural has brown.  I found out Madi was also allergic to white rice, it could be something that simple.  If the food is not appealing to him, and it might upset his tummy he will turn his nose up.

I still add stuff to her food....(go ahead start telling me now!)  It is normally two pieces of turkey or ham lunch meat, some water and a scoop of her food.  Crunchies as I call them. She does not eat every meal, there are days she will not eat at all.  But as I have learned if she is hungry enough she will eat.

Good luck, I do agree with everyone to make sure nothing is wrong.  But I understand your frustrations.  You just want to make the safe and happy!

I agree with Cesar Milan on most everything. I agree that doggies need to exer. more and some need a "job." Also, summer makes some dogs eat less.

I wanted to hear something other than he's bored with it as I honestly don't believe that and I already take it away when he doesn't eat it.  I wanted to hear if someone had this happen and possibly why.

After he flat out refused breakfast, walked away and laid down...I went out this morning and bought Innova.  I mixed half and half when I got back and he ate like normal.  Last time this happened, it was the same way he would gradually eat less over the week and then flat out refuse.  Although last time it happened immediately following a heat wave, so I was convinced that the food had turned.  I'm hoping that switching him to Innova makes all the difference in the world, especially because I know it is better for him.

We normally store his food in a large plastic garbage can, it isn't air tight which makes me crazy, but I think that we don't store it for excessive periods so it shouldn't entirely matter.  After the last purchase, I actually left it in the bag and shoved it in the can, as I've been told that the plastic can leech out nutrients over time.

I had just had a fecal done last week and that came back normal.  Which, if it wasn't would probably cause him to eat more, not less.

I think that I'm going to try the food switch for this week and then take him in on Saturday if there's a repeat of this behavior.  I know him and he's not at all acting out of the ordinary except for with his kibble.

    Thank you all!!!!

Some other things to consider.  Maybe he's getting too much food.  I'm not on here enough to remember how old your dog is, but it might be that you're expecting him to eat what he did as an active younger dog, and *he's* cutting himself back to what a less active adult would eat.  Like I said, I don't know your dog, so I may be totally off base here, but just figured I'd toss it out there. Also, if you're adding Innova, you will definately need to watch the amount you feed.  When my dogs are actively competing and burning calories, I was feeding 2 cups a day of Innova to my 78 lb dog.

How often are you feeding him> Maybe 2-3 meals a day will help.

I think storing the food in a container that isnt 100% air tight may make a big difference in the smell/taste and freshness of the food which could have played a part in your dog not wanting to eat.Food starts to deteriorate the moment you open the bag when air and light hits it,if it's getting constant contact with air then i would say it would speeden up the process.
Invest in one of those rubbermaid "food safe"(it must be certified food safe) containers that are 100% sealable, they are relatively cheap.

I was the one who said 11/2 years eating the same food for every meal is a very long time, and i would imagine most dogs would get bored of this routine.Boredness aside,as someone else mentioned,it is advisable to rotate diferent foods anyway. Does he get any other meals besides just plain dry food?

but got responses i wasn't entirely happy with

Welcome to the world of forums [:D] Not every response will be what you WANT to hear, but thats life,we all dont think the same and we all have differing opinions and experiences. You could ask the same question on a hundred different forums until you get the answers you want to hear, but what would be the point of that??If you only wanted advice to baqck up what you already thought anyway, why did you ask the question?
