Small Dogs need Parvo more often?

That's absolutely untrue.  Vet schools are ALL recommending a THREE year interval between vaccines now.

e never heard of small dogs needing more frequent vaccinations.  Personally I find this to be misinformation...and coming from a vet scares me.  My Mom owns a small breed (shih tzu) and we've never been told they require more frequent vaccinations.  Where the heck did your vet receive this information?

We have a small dog  and I have to echo what's been said so far...I have had no need to get her more frequent vaccinations.  I'd say go look for another vet...

Do not vacc. more then is needed, small dogs need just the same as larger dogs and no more.  I'm all for the yearly exams and vaccinations but some vets have gone vaccination crazy, I think it s for the $$$ mostly so unless your very fond of this vet I might consider swiching. 
 
The way it should work is you get your two puppy vacc at around 8weeks old (still unsure when the propper age is but I've setteled on 8 weeks so far), the fist being something like a DA2PP then the secound would be 3 weeks later and you would get the DA2PP and the 1 year rabies.  Then the following year you go back for a DA2PP and get the 3 year rabies.  Each year after you go back only once a year for the DA2PP and every 3 years for the rabies.  DO NOT OVER VACCINATE please! 
 
Some even go as far to only get the Parvo vacc instead of the DA2PP, it's up to you.  The DA2PP is a mixture of vaccinations for Parvo, Distemper and a couple other things but many will argue it's not nessisary to vaccinate for all at one time and may even cause some damage.  Some dogs will even have a reaction to some vaccinations so it's just something to wach out for and decide on your own what your dog needs.

Here is the proper vaccine protocol according to Dr. Jean Dodds.
 
Parvo and distemper ONLY modified live virus at 9 and 12 weeks and then again between 16-20 weeks.  Rabies, again modified live virus, not before 24 weeks.  Booster everything a year later and then titer for immunity levels before ANY more vaccines.
 
pups loose mommas immunities SOMETIME between 8 and 15 weeks, but no one knows which one looses when and there isn't reliable testing so the shots are given in a series.  Anything given before the 9th week is not only wasted, but stresses the immune system.  IF that pup lost his immunities at 8 weeks, that ONE shot does the trick, the others aren't needed, but there is no way to tell, hence the series.  Theoretically, you *could* keep your pup in a plastic bubble and not immunize but once, at 16 weeks.  However, you loose valuable socialization time that way.
 
I don't have Dr. Dodd's website on this computer, so PLEASE do a google search for it and educate yourself on vaccines.

I had read the vaccination schedules on-line and didn't think small dogs needed extra shots, so when my vet said that small dogs need a Parvo every 6 months, I thought I would ask in-case I had read out-of-date information.
 
I don't know why she thinks they should get Parvo vaccines twice a year, but I'm not going to let her do it.  I do really like her, and she's pretty knowledgable about everything else.  My holistic vet doesn't see dogs for regular check-ups and she is who he recommended, so I'll stick with her, but make sure I educate myself first before I let her do anything unusual.

I have one small dog who had parvo as a puppy. My vets agree that she does not need any parvo shots, ever. We will not risk extra vaccines, with her.

My other small dog had a vaccine reaction, last year. I've found a vet who will pull titers. It's unfortunate that your holistic vet doesn't do checkups. Titers seem to be the way to go.
