does anyone know what breed of terrier this is?

I'm thinking about adopting this dog - I meet him tomorrow! The people at the shelter say he just recently arrived and they can't really get a good idea of his peronality traits because he is depressed :(

I'm thinking that finding out about his breed would answer some questions. Terriers are supposed to be smart and energetic, right?  But he's different - he's 90 pounds! Anyone have any experience here?

What do you guys think?

One guess would be Airedale, they get pretty tall and big for a terrior.  But are Airedale's all black?  Or do they come in colors?  I suppose the mix part could change the color though.

Can't say what kind of terrier, but he looks a lot like the Lab/Terrier mix that comes to my vet.  Maybe he's part Lab, too.

The tail  and coat make me think Golden Retriever mix, not sure what else might be in there. Sorry. Give him a pat on the head for me when you meet him.

You guys are great - thanks for replying so quickly! If anyone else has any thoughts on the subject, I'd love to know!
(I will certainly give him a good pat on the head for you!)

I agree that he may well be mixed with a larger sporting dog, not sure. Airedales are big terriers but there isn't much about him that says "airedale" besides size.

Poor guy, I can see why you want to take him home, I would too! No matter the breed I would expect an 11 month old to have a good deal of energy and need for training. Given his background I wouldn't be too surprised if he has some separation anxiety... but I'm sure with a lot of love and training he would be a really great pup!

His head and expression are VERY Irish Wolfhound...piercing eyes of a sighthound in there! People often forget that they have that "Terrier" type of coat! They also come in that Wheaten/red shade tho I've never seen one so reddish as opposed to sandy...90lbs at 11 months is a LARGE dog....he could top out over 100lbs+ as a grown 2-4 y/o.

Another LARGE rarely seen breed with a wirecoat is the Otterhound. "Sandy" in the Annie movie, was an Otterhound [;)]

Don't leave out the possibility of this being a "doodle".  Many poodle mixes are called terrier mixes when brought into shelters/rescues because of the coat texture.

aw! Good for you for adopting him! Poor guy, he needs some lovin'. All confused, had two owners drop him. Get him and give him tons of love!

He does kind of look like a goldendoodle but can they get to be 90lbs? I dont really know what the standard is for goldens or poodles but that seems a little too big.

I've seen some very oversized goldens and labs. And we all know the doodle breeders don't go by any standards. [:@]

Somebody asked about Airedale's colors.  They come in only one combo (to my knowledge): black and tan.

I have seen a Labradoodle that weighs 100 lbs.

I always like to try to guess first before reading the thread and my first guess what Golden/ Irish Wolfhound  His legs are not as long and slender as a wolfhound but his body seems to have a similar shape.  The color shouts out Golden and his face seems to have that look also.

After reading the thread someone said goldenoodle and that just jumped out.  A lot of oddles do have the terrier looking coat.

He is a very good looking dog and eventhough things didn't work out with his previous owners it looks like he was cared for and feed alright.

Yes, terrier/lab mix, and yes, there can be some HUGE labs out there now. Here's a picture of Murphy, the day I brought him home (to foster) before his haircut and after. (He always has short hair now.)

Hey--those terriers are handfuls, too! Take your vitamins!

So I met Teddy in person on Saturday - he is perfect! He's really freaked out by the pound - so much so that he's lost a lot of weight and he's started drooling. Poor guy. He has a pretty bad upper respiratory infection, too. We have to get him out of there and healthy!

NFowler - Murphy looks JUST like Teddy - except that Teddy is more of a sandy color. But they definitely look strikingly similar! Thanks for posting the photos - he looks adorable with long and short hair.

I put in an application to adopt Teddy, so keep your fingers crossed!

Thanks again everyone - I'll keep you posted!
