When Did You Dog Become Trustworthy?

When Did You Dog Become Trustworthy?

Just curious, when did your pup prove himself trustworthy of not sleeping in his crate at night? I want to be able to leave Liz out of her crate at night, but I dont want her to tear anything up.

She looks so sad when she has to go in her crate at night and I would love to get her a nice doggy bed and put it next to my bed.

How can I go about this? I also dont want her to poop/pee and I think the crate is what makes her hold it, and I dont want to put her to sleep with to much room so she has an accident since we have been accident free for a few months now.

Thank you in adavance for all advice!

    How old is your dog?

I'd say when she is housebroken would I let her free on the carpet..  We've had our pup only 4 weeks now, she is now 5 months and we let her sleep on the bed on my pillow all nite with no accidents.   We rotate her, some nites in the crate and some on the bed.   But immeidately when I/she  wakes, she goes out to pee.

    How old is Lizzie now?
I was wondering the same thing about Daisy. I know that she is way too young right now (4 months) but was just wondering when eventually I would be able to let her sleep with the crate open. I never crated Duke, right from a young puppy he slept on our bed and he was fine... but I don't trust Daisy that much.

Does Lizzie still wake up in the middle of the night to go out?

It won't be the same with every dog, but Russell could be out overnight at 5months, home alone around 10 or 11 months.

Liz turns 7 months old on the 8th.

She came home at 8 weeks of age and I have never taken her out at night, what I did was wake up extra early before going to work, and on weekends if I overslept she would wake me up (she slept in a box beside my bed...lol)

When she is in her crate she holds it faithfully until I wake up (whatever time that may be) but Im afraid she'll go crazy with so much new room.

That is what I would be afriad of with Daisy.  She would just want to run around and play instead of sleep!  When you do try it, let me know how it goes.

Slick's never slept in a crate.  He's slept in his puppy bed (beside ours) from 8 weeks on..  We pottied him on a schedule and never had any problems.   I never worried about late night destruction because he SLEPT (still does) and our bedroom is puppy proofed.   Liz is DEFINITELY old enough to hold it all night, so why don't you do a test run?   Just make sure you potty her right before bed and maybe get up an hour early to take her out.

Let's see my Rottie was trustworthy at 5 months but was gated in the kitchen at night.  My SHih Tzu I got in March2006 and he is 2.  He only sleeps in his crate and has full run of the house during the day while someone is here.  Otherwise he is in his crate.  He enjoys his crate and doesn't whine at all at night.  It depends on the dog.  Harley will probably forever be a crate dog at night and when we are gone.  He is trustworthy when supervised and I don't want to give him the oppurtunity at this point.  He has been adjusting well over the last few months and I do not wish for any set backs at this point.  To me its too early to test him.

Max was never crated, either.  He always slept on our bed and did fine, but the door was closed so he didn't have run of the house at night.  He was using the doggy door reliably within a week of getting him, and he was totally reliable being left alone by the time he was about a year old.

When we stopped crating Russell overnight we would take him out for a last potty break just before going to sleep, close the bedroom doors overnight, and then take him out first thing in the morning when he woke up. He didn't really have a chance to do any damage or have an accident, he just slept.

    Hmm... Maddi's a late bloomer [8|]

She wasn't "free" of her crate at night until 14 months. I still shut her in my room, though.

Most nights she chooses to sleep in her crate (as I leave the door on it open)... once in a while she'll sleep on the rug next to me.

Could you put her doggie bed next to yours and maybe put her lead on her and around your wrist?  That way if she tries to roam you will know and it won't be too far?  I am not sure if this would work (Charlie is still in our bed or in his crate)?

Sally was an year old and unhousetrained when we got her, but for some reason she never had an issue with accidents over night.  We just had to make sure we took her out right before we went to bed and got up early in the morning to take her potty, or she would have an accident--but actually overnight was never an issue.

Its funny, Duke wasn't house trained until over a year old, but he has NEVER gone to the bathroom in our bedroom.  I think that he thinks of the whole bedroom as his den.  Daisy on the other hand is way better at the house training thing, but has had accidents in our bedroom.  I almost wonder if that is because she just thinks of her crate as her den, and the rest of the room isn't???  For this reason, it will take me awhile to trust Daisy out of her crate at night.

As soon as Loki was potty trained, he got bedroom priveleges. We moved his crate into our bedroom, but started leaving the door open. We bought him a dog bed, so he could sleep wherever he wanted. He's never had an accident and for the most part he sleeps through the night. If he does need to go out, he just scratches at the bedroom door.

When we adopted Odin, we started him in a crate for a few weeks and then transitioned him just like we did with Loki when he was a puppy. Neither of them have ever chewed anything in the bedroom. BTW, they're both about a year and a half.

I do still crate them when I leave for the day, though. Odin will find things to chew during the day.
