    am i being too picky?

the store where we buy our dog/cat food, and many of the other pet related products we buy, has started ticking me off. they used to be really helpful and friendly, but recently the one employee that seems to be there everytime we go in is too busy talking on the phone to be helpful. on top of this, there food selection is getting progressively worse.

the store is a small chain in upstate sc. the main food they carry is blackwood (which we use for the dogs) and they always have a plentiful and complete selection of the blackwood line. they stock a complete line of wellness and many of the brands that can be found at petsmart or most any other pet store (iams, purina, nutro, etc.). we had our cats on chicken soup. the last time we were in there all they had was the weight loss formula and at that there was only a couple of bags of it. they had one or two bags of felidae which we got. i had previously asked them if they stocked felidae, as they are listed on canidae's web site as being a supplier, and the clerk didnt even know what it was. we have considered switching the dogs to canidae, but at most they only ever have one or two bags in stock and many times they have none.they used to carry innova but i dont think they have had any of that the last few times we have been in.

i mainly think it is just the store close to us because we have been to the one across town and they seem to have a better selection in stock and friendly helpful staff. we would just go to it, but it is way out of the way for me and my wife. i guess the biggest thing is it pisses me off that we are willing to pay slightly more to support a more local store, but i am not willing to do that if the store is crap.

am i being too picky to think that a store should carry what they say they carry and be, at the very least, friendly when i come in?

I'm funny like that too.  Especially, if I'm going out of my way to shop there.  I have stopped shopping at small stores that actually have what I need but I didn't feel comfortable there.  At the same time, I don't like it when they are all over me asking me if I need help and make me feel like I can't browse.

I have to say sometimes that's why I love Petsmart or Petco.  You go in, you could be there all day, who would notice??

It does kinda creep me out when I go into a pet store and they know me and my dog by name.  I once liked the feed store in my little town but then I swiched foods and they don't sell what I feed.  I think it's best to go to a place where you know you can get the food you want.  I wouldn't worrie about the staff, for the most part I've alwayse seemed to know more then they do so I just let myself decide what is best for my dog (or ask people on this forum). I don't think I would trust the judgment of a high schooler anyway.

You have every right to be picky, You would not go into a restraunt and order if you didn't like the selection or service  local or chain.  This is your dogs food and you need to be picky.

Its definitely annoying that they aren't keeping a good inventory in stock, and that the staff is rude. Personally as long as they had the food I needed, I'd probably just deal with it rather than go out of the way to a different store, but I would be irritated, certainly. Maybe you could write a letter to the manager.

If you don't mind going across town I'd go across town. Customer service is really important to me, too, and I can't stand being ignored in a store. That turns me off and I will often leave even if I still need something they're selling... I've worked in retail and there's just no excuse for not waiting on the customers - that should be their #1 priority at all times.

Definately frustrating. Customer service IS important.

I got into a discussion with one of the clerks at the place where I get my food. She told me that Innova EVO was carb-free. I explained that, no, it isn't carb-free, it is grain free. She argued, and assured me that it was in fact carb-free - and I told her that it had potatoes in it - and while it may be lower carb than traditional kibbles, it isn't CARB FREE. You can NOT have potatoes and other veggies and be completely carb-free.

I then told her, that being just a consumer I could certainly be wrong. She pulled out a bag, and we learned that yes, it is lower in carbs (but not carb free) and GRAIN free.

Now she gives me the stink eye when I go in there.

No, you're not being too picky.  Stock the food they advertise and be available to help?  Isn't that why they're in business?

    thanks everyone.

my wife is the one that usually stops in for the food (she passes by it on her way to and from work), but i go in on the weekends some. she has been complaining about the staff for some time, and i have recently dealt with it first hand. it irks me that the last time my wife stopped she bought 2 - 40 lb bags of dog food, a 20 lb bag of cat food and some other stuff (totaled to over $120); and the clerk acted like it was inconvenient to ring her up.

i told my wife that we should either switch to the store across town, or find a new place to get food (even if it meant switching the dogs to another brand). she thought i was being too drastic and picky, and i was just looking for some other opinions. thanks again. [:)]

    cyclefiend,
Just had to say an individual "hello."  I'm from Greenville, and currently many, many miles from home.  When I saw Taylors as your location, I got a little weepy eyed.[:(]

Customer services is also very important to me... although I'd contact the store owner as he/she may not even be aware of the way this particular employee is acting... and, they can't make things better if they aren't aware.

If it went unresolved, I certainly would try to find somewhere new to shop. If an empolyee isn't smart enough to associate the cash I'm handing them with their paycheck, then they don't need that cash as bad as someone who DOES care.
    JMO, though.

I don't think you're being too picky.  If the staff at the store where I buy pet food acted like that, I'd go to another store in the city.  That'd be a huge pain for me, but I will not tolerate rude behavior when *I* am the one responsible for their paychecks.  Luckily, the Pet Supplies "Plus" I go to has friendly staff and they've always been exceptionally courteous to me (and Roxie).

Not picky at all.  The store's goal should be to make money.  The secret of success lies with two important things: Product and Service.  You can attract customers with the products you carry.  You keep them with the service you provide.  If you are lacking one or both, you lose the customer.  Plain and simple.

As a former pet supply store employee, they ask you if you need help to be helpful. It's a loose loose situation. You either say nothing to the customer and they accuse you of having lousy customer service, or you could ask the customer if they need help and they think you're annoying.

Now, unknowledgable staff is another thing. The store I used to work for opened another store nearer to Chicago. They can't find knowledgable employees. I guess because there are so many other places to get a job compared to the location of their other store. I am the sales rep for one of their distributors now and when I go in there, I'm shocked at how, well, dumb their employees are.

I've seen employees walk away from customers when they asked where something was or about a certain product.

The store manager has asked me to run their next store meeting and teach them about the different dog and cat foods and suppliments and shampoos. I'm actually excited to do it.

i like the fact that when we used to go in someone always asked if we needed help.

i dont like it when they ask, and i say just looking and they follow me around the whole time like i am trying to steal something.
