VET COULD HAVE KILLED MY DOG.

Four white feet, do not treat was the old adgage to remind vets to think twice before using ivermectin on herding breeds. I've noticed that apparently not all vets remembered this - or maybe they were absent from class the day they covered this! [;)] Or a lot f them believed the manufacturers assurance that there's not enough ivermectin to be a problem for sensitive dogs. Remember though that this is outdated, now - there's more drugs that apply, but it only applies to dogs that have the mutation. You don't know this unless you test, however.

ATaxia is where one side of the body becomes dominant over the other so you'd see anything from a slight head tilt to an inability to walk in a straight line.

Vertigo is a loss of coordination between visual centers, the inner ear, and the brain, which results in slight difficulty in balance, on up to nausea, obvious confusion, head pressing, collapse, and even severe aggression.

Thanks for your response, Becca. I got an email from the VCPL Manager who said that "one third of purebred Aussies have the mutation.  We will soon have a large number of dogs tested so we can give out a more exact percentage with confidence." I've sent away for a test kit.  I was surprised that it was $60 - seems kinda high to me for a bloodtest. Christi

It's not a blood test.  It's a cheek swab (like you see on CSI).  It's very easy to do, but be sure you get enough cheek cells when you do it (don't be shy, twirl the brush a lot - this will make sense when you get the kit).  You usually get the results in 2-3 weeks.  Part of the reason for the high price is that it's a new test and they are the only lab that offers it.  Once it becomes more mainstream, the price will (hopefully) go down.

Chewbecca -- it's not a 'migraine' (if you have ever had one you will know they are a really specific kind of headache) -- it's way more complicated than a headache of any sort because the ivermectin actually crosses the barrier INTO the dog's brain and affects all the neural centers from there.  There is literally almost unbearable head PAIN among many other side effects.  But it's not like a human migraine that can be treated with anti-inflammatories.

Of course, you're right, Colliewog - I do remember reading that it was a swab test when I ordered the kit.  I was in a hurry and typed bloodtest by mistake.  [:D]

Oh my! I had no idea! I have put all my Shetland Sheepdogs on Heartguard and have had no problems. Thanks to y'all, I perhaps need to change to Interceptor?

Well thank you very much, Dyan! I took that one morning at about 6 am, when they like to wake me up and get me out of bed. I was out there in my back yard in night gown and all, but I got the photo I wanted. Glad you  like it!

I will be seeing my vet in a couple weeks and talk to them about Interceptor. I am so thankful for this forum and all the info I learn from y'all! Thanks so much!
