I always knew that puppy mills were an aberration & a cruelty that I just can't imagine.  I'm ashamed to be part of the species that harms helpless animals in such a way.  I live in PA & will try to make the awareness day.   After reading their website, I'm horrified at what PA is allowing to happen, well the whole country to be exact.  I may be speaking too soon but I heard this on the news the other day & did a quick search on it & apparently our Gov is taking steps toward ending puppy mills in PA.

I love the PTA idea in schools they are so many ways even on a local level by educating in our communities.
This is a great thread..... Anything you need from me feel free to delegate to me.

Just by reading this thread has inspired me to try tell one person everyday about puppy mills. I work with the public so this shouldnt be too hard.

"Pennsylvania is often referred to as the puppy mill capital of the east with Lancaster County having the highest concentration of puppy mills of any county in the country."
Quoted from the website Annie posted.  Sadly, Holmes County here in Ohio ranks second to Lancaster County in terms of the number of puppy mills but it is considered the worst as far as the inhumane conditions the in which the dogs are kept.

my2sonsohio, do you know what is similar between Holmes County & Lancaster County?  They both have a large Amish population.  I'm not saying that ALL Amish & Mennonites run puppy mills but here it's commonly known that most puppy mills are run by them.

I'm in Canada, what can I do. I have never seen anything on the news or in the papers about puppy mills. This board is the first place ever that I ever heard of such a thing. Most of the puppies around here I believe come from BYB. There are 70 ads a week in our local paper of people selling pups from their home. 80% of them are ABCA reg. or CKC reg.

There is one ad that stands out though. Every week it is run, it once said labs now it's labradoodles. I do not know if they are good or bad. Here is the link: Notice the family pic.

I suppose the only way to know is to check these places out.  I have heard that it is hard to get into some of these byb or puppy mills,,,,they don't let you see how the dogs are kept.
The article that was just in our local newspaper said that many of the Amish places are NOW kept up well, clean and all and that they have learned that since more people are aware of what is going on now so they watch what they are buying. BUT that it is very sad to see cages piled on top of one another,,where the moms never get to touch the ground or flat surfaces.
Does the fact that they are registed mean anything??????

Doesn't it make you ashamed to live in these areas?  It does me.

There's a Petland by me, I refuse to even step one foot near that place! This one girl bought her papillion from there and I almost flipped out. She paid over $1,000 for him! I should find out if the Petland by me uses Hunte, I'm sure they all do since it's a chain!

I read on one of these sites that you can find the name of HUNTE somewhere on the cages of these puppies that are purchased thru Hunte.  I haven't been in a Petland for such a long time that I am not sure if that would be true or not.  A small pet store where I used to purchase Eagle Pack was sold to another owner who now sells puppies....but I quit going there also. I would like to find out of it is Hunte that they buy from but I just can't bring myself to walk in that store!!

To start,,,we could go to [linkhttp://columbusdogconnection.com/PrettyGirlsBill.htm]http://columbusdogconnection.com/PrettyGirlsBill.htm[/link] and sign some emails.
We could go to the Pa site and write a letter to them. [linkhttp://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/659306722?z00m=87877&z00m=87877&z00m=87877]http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/659306722?z00m=87877&z00m=87877&z00m=87877[/link]

While most of you don't live in these states...the midwest is where most of the horrible puppy mills are.

Do you belong to other dog forum?   Maybe we can start a list of them...and we can all try to write to them and get a conversation started about it. I think we are all in agreement that this is a horrible practice. If we all get a few people interested enough to send an email or two....it can snowball pretty good.  I don't have a lot of time,,,but I am trying to find some places we can write to.
I have put messages on boards that I am on.
If we all put our two cents in and come up with an idea.
