On one of my golden retriever forums, a dog had puppies 2 weeks ago, 8 boys and 1 girl. Belong to a minister in Florida and the Mom is a show dog. I do not know if she is champion yet or not. This was her first litter of puppies.
All went fine at first. She had the puppies by c-section and was a natural mom. But a few days ago she became sick and he rushed her to the vet--mastitis. Over the next day or two she got worse and he took her back--gangreen in her breast. Was taken to a hospital about 1 1/2 hours drive a away and admited to await surgery. They wanted to see how much tissue was actually dead before they started to operate. The operation was set for this afternoon. The puppies are being bottle fed every 2 hours.
Yesterday their worse fears came to be. The puppies got sick. Most, if not all, had drank that contaminated milk. They wre rushed to the vet and given antibiotics and sent home. One of the boys died this morning. They wre all taken back to the vet and the lone girl was in such bad condition the vet kept her but sent the 7 boys home. The first one to get sick, Yellow (so called as he has a yellow ribbon on his neck since birth) was improving, temp down to normal, etc.
But then the last post from the minister a little while ago--the little girl is gone and Yellow has taken a turn for the worst. There has been no word on the mom or how the surgery went. Need I say the minister and his wife are all torn up.
