OMG!!! This has GOT to stop

I'm sitting here praying for a HARD freeze in August.

Last weekend, I was standing on the back deck while DH was mowing.  I pointed out some stuff DS had left right at the corner of the fence by the house and said "see, that's prime snake hiding area".  DH picked stuff up and sure enough, there was a snake under it.

Then today I sent DH out to the garage to the big deep freeze to get some chicken breasts out to thaw.  I wasn't SURE that I'd put them where they belong in the freezer so stepped out onto the porch like deck (the garage level is below the house level) so I was a good 8 feet UP....but right by the back walk through door of the garage, there was a BIG snake.  OK, maybe only 20" long but to me THATS big.  DH thinks it was in the dog yard and THEY scared it into the garage.

I'm getting better...I didn't scream and didn't run, but there is NO way I'm going back out into that garage again anytime soon.  My recycling bins are on shelves out there...my work shop is out there, and my freezer as well.  Guess one of the guys will be getting meat out for dinner from here on out.........does anyone have a barncat they want a home for?????

Poor you Glenda, I couldn't handle those things around me.
I just googled getting rid of snakes and found this:
    Sprinkle Mothballs
Sprinkle mothballs around where the snakes are and they will go away. I had them here in my yard near out deck and this method worked. Just be careful with mothballs and children!
Maybe if you put the mothballs in the garage at least they won't scare the bahgeebies out of you.

Dang it!  I've GOT mothballs in the garage to keep the mice from getting in there.  BUT, those are mostly in the cupboards of the workshop, so will go out and get a couple boxes today to get it out of there.  PART of the problem is that there is a mountain of STUFF in the middle of the garage for it to hide under since the landlords furnitureand stuff is still in the garage taking up a good chunk of it.  Supposedly thats going to be leaving fairly soon, but I've been hearing that since MAY.

I've always been afraid they'd get in the garage and hurry to get the big overhead lights turned on so it's very WELL lit, but light doesn't do me much good when I SEE the danged things.  IF DH is right and it got in the dog yard and they scared it in, it had to drop a good 10" from the door sill and will likely be in a hurry to find another way out.  I hope.  But, I'm still not going out there until we get a hard freeze.

I've heard of the mothball thing too, but I don't know if it works or not. My dad killed a water moccassin (cottonmouth) at his house two days ago, but that's not an unusual event. I haven't come across any snakes here since I've been back *knock on wood* unless you count the baby grass snake Brett caught a couple of weeks ago. However, it won't surprise me when I do come upon a snake considering how close I live to water and a swamp. When it really, really rains around here, mudsnakes start to pop out all over the place, but they're not poisonous, so I don't panic (read: I don't scream half as much) when I see those.

Hey, I've said it before and I'll say it again:

There are no snakes in Alaska!

Of course I can't take Sofia for a walk until later because a mama moose is out there with her two babies.....[;)]

I read somewhere of a snake deterrent but the primary active ingredients are sulhpur and napthalene. Essentially a smell of rotten eggs and lighter fluid.

snakes are cool - rather have snakes than spiders

Wow, that's a pretty bird.  Ya suppose customs would let him through?

I am really freaked by this...the yard is bad, up by the house is worse and now IN the danged garage???  DH opened the overhead so he could LEAVE easily....sure hope he does SOON, but I'm not going out there again until we get a good hard freeze.

OMG, Glenda, after reading your earlier posts about this problem, and now this . . . . . . you're a stronger woman than I am.  I'd be heading to the nearest motel until the cold weather arrives!  Not to give you something else to worry about, but the darn things can head indoors when it's cold (such as through dryer vents -- this happened at my friend's house once).  I'd be a wreck, not sleeping, sitting with my feet tucked up underneath me at all times, etc.

So Alaska has NO snakes?  Not even the little garden or grass ones?  Hmmmmm, something to consider for future relocations! Didn't St. Patrick lead all the snakes out of Ireland?  Does that mean there aren't any there, either?  I think I'd rather live in Ireland (been there and LOVED it, haven't yet visited Alaska).

Big surprise --- I will NOT be going to see "Snakes on a Plane!"  (Besides snakes, flying is my biggest phobia).

I have been terrified of snakes for 52 years now. These ARE just grass snakes.  They aren't gonna hurt me...I keep telling myself that, but......

I do NOT want to live in the city so I'm just going to have to find a way to get over this and act like an adult.  But, by golly, that garage is gonna have enough moth balls in it that ain't NOTHING gonna want to be in it.

Hmm.  I really, really want to see *Snakes on a Plane* - I don't think I'll blow $20 going to a theater.  I suspect it will be coming to the small screen pretty quickly. [:D][:D]

One time my brother caught a snake and since we didn't have a cage for it we put it in my tortoise's cage in my room. It got out and we had to go to bed before we could find it. That is what you call a sleepless night. I like snakes, but sleeping with one...

Snakes are a lot better than spiders. Our storage center is filled with them and I yelp every time I see one coming towards me. And then a few days ago a spider crawled in the bathroom and had babies. *shudder* I'd much rather have snakes.

You sound like me.  I was at my Grandma's the other day when a centipede scuttled across the floor right at me.  I shrieked like anything while my Grandma (three hip replacements and a bad knee) ran across the room and smushed it.  Way to go, Grandma!
