Embarrassing at the dog park..is this normal?

I've been taking my dog to the dog park for about a month now. Usualy when there are other dogs there he'll acknowledge them but do his own thing sniff trees/mark/ etc. On occasion and all of yesterday he'll go upto to other dogs specificaly males and will sniff butt which is typical but then start licking there male area. This is disgutting to me and others at the dog park. Though some say oh its normal others I can tell there thinking my dog is disgusting. Im just curious if this is a typical male thing or not? The only thing I can think of is this is part of a scent thing that they get from that but being human its utterly gross just thinking of that. Yesterday for some odd reason he spent the entire time at the park doing this to specific male dogs. Needless to say we didnt stay long because I was embarrassed of it. Anyone have any ideas to this behavior??

My little monster Charlie does the same thing, except he has to go to the largest male dog in the park.  I rarely go to the dog park with him because he is so ridiculous.  But, owners actually seem to find it funny when Charlie falls in love with their dog.

Romeo will sometimes do the same thing,  or has it done to him.  If he does not like the dog doing it, he finds a way to get out of the situation if not he will just stand there.  I have to make him go fetch or sound very excited over something to break the orgy off [;)]  It does not last very long, it usually happens when we first get there after a couple of minutes is over.  The good thing is he never joins in when another dog arrives.

Max and Buster do this to each other all the time.  It is gross.  All I have to do is say the name of the dog doing it and it ends.  I guess it's a normal thing, but I don't know why they do it.

Ben has this done to him by older dogs occasionally.  Thankfully the owners of the other dogs generally call theirs off so I don't have to say anything.  I am sure I am tempting fate here, because Ben could well start doing this to other dogs lol.

Gross to us.  Perfectly normal to them.  From sniffing and licking those areas, he can tell everything he needs to know about his new friend - age, sex, any health issues.

    Yeah, it's a complete background check  [:D]

I've seen dogs do it to Xerxes, specifically dogs that he's known for a while.

Lucky me, Xerxes does this exclusively to females...it's quite embarrassing.  Basically I call him off and tell him he needs to buy her dinner first.

Thanks for sharing ur experiences with it lol. I was feeling a little weird there for a while. Now I have an explantation for when people look at me weird. I try to call him off but end up pulling him away. Then he'll run around all the dogs trying to find the one he was doing his business with. Im taking a little break from the d.p. for a while anyways so hopefully he'll forget about those dogs for the next time we go becuase normaly he's off doing his own thing.

It's completely normal and just embarrasing to humans.  Dogs think WE are nuts because WE don't do it![:D]
