I need to buy Ben a dictionary......

.....he needs to learn what "tired" means.  [:D]

We just got back from taking Ben for a walk.  We took him again to a "park" near us that is more like a nature reserve.....all huge fields, woods, deer and a river to swim in.  The entire thing is fenced and gated (to keep the deer in) so it's one of the places I let Ben have a really good off-leash run.  This time, though, we drove to a different entrance - it was beautiful, quiet, there was NOBODY around...and we got lost.  We did eventually find our way back to the car but we were walking for a lot longer than we had planned to be.

After a 1.5 hour walk and a half hour swim, Ben was still RUNNING, flat out running, for the last 10 minutes before we got to the car.  Where does this dog get the energy?  Honestly, I am exhausted now, and he still wants to play.  I know Labs are full of energy but I was under the impression that it was at least POSSIBLE to tire them out.  Apparently not, or at least not for my Lab.

Silly Ben.  At least he's keeping ME well exercised.

Ha ha, dont you love it? The ONLY time I've ever seen Rory actually tired was when we went camping and hiked for two days straight and played in the water. Her and another dog raced up and down the beach one day for 5 hours straight while we were ahving a BBQ gathering, I couldnt believe it! Dosnt it make you think that maybe they dont recognize being tired and just run till they drop, haha!

Max needs to learn that word too. We went out for a walk for a half hour, and it's hot, which is why we only stayed out that long. He refused to take a drink while we were out, and I could tell he was thirsty. He comes in the door, and instead of getting a drink right away, he races around the house looking for my mom because he saw her car out front. Then he went to get a toy to play with. The heck with being tired.

I found that with Sally, she'll keep going if you let her, but if you just let her relax and lay down--she's out.

I don't mean to hijack the thread, but what kind of dog is Max, and how big is he?  In some of his pics he looks a lot like Sally to me--minus the coloring...

I think Max was about 57 lbs last time he got on a scale, and he's a Trenton Street Terrier, or a Chewing Boxing Maxtiff Terrorizer, or if you want real guesses on breeds, Boxer/Mastiff/Pit/Chow, and who knows what else.

You're at that point with him where there is no bottom to the energy well.  That was a tough time in our puppyhood, too.
Keep in mind, too, that if you keep him at a level of exercise for a while, he will become accustomed to that and it will be his "maintenance" level.... ie, won't tire him out anymore.  So you increase his activity and THAT becomes his norm.  Just happens sometimes...

Earlier tonight, we took Max out for about 45 minutes, 15 minutes or so of that was running around on playground equipment. He was up the different types of stairs, down a few slides (and back up some of them), and he even walked across the wobbling platforms a few times, which required a lot of effort on his part. 45 minutes later he was ready to go out again, nevermind that I was not.
That got me thinking of why I like the winter so much more than summer. In the summer, if I walk Max for a half hour, he comes in and gets his drink, lays on the floor, and in a half hour, he's ready to go again. In the winter time, if we go out for 15 minutes in snow up to his belly, we come back in and he's tired for the next 2-3 hours. If I wanted him tired that long now, it would require another young dog for him to play with for some time, a long walk, and some walking in the water, as he does not swim. If I want any more than that, he's gotta spend the day at day care.

I have the opposite problem. My Eddie never has any energy.Hes 6 monthe old and since he came here at 6 weeks old hes allways been that way.He sleeps ,eats, poops and sleeps some more.He might have a 5 minute "outburst " when i fill the pool or something but thats it.Most of the pics i have of him are of him sleeping.Anyone want to trade for the day?I can have fun playing and you can take a 4 hour nap with eddie.
We are going to the doggie walk a thon next month andi asked my daughter if she wanted to take him and she said "no,he will fall asleep 10 minutes in and hes too heavy to carry"

Actually, it is OK....deep breaths, we will get through this.  And thanks to Ben, my wedding dress will fit perfectly lol.

Oh my goodness, our dogs should all hang out. My dog can give them some pointers on how to be the laziest dog ever! [:D]

She is a total ball of energy on walks (she wants to us to jog. A LOT.) But during the day, inside the house (with OR without us)? I'd say it's about 20% awake, 80% asleep. If she's not getting petted, working on training, or being fed, then she just sort of plops down on the floor by us and is out like a light. I mean, she's *older*, but she's not a geriatric dog yet! By the time she's 10 she's going to be terrible! [;)]

LOL, she just stretched out on the floor and let out a huge snore. Good timing.
