So hard to say goodbye.

    So hard to say goodbye.

Some  of you might know I was fostering a doberman.  The person adopting him stopped by last weekend to meet the pup.  To me it seemed like love at first sight.  Shredder wouldn't stop licking him and jumped right on his lap.  Well today he picked him up.  I felt sad to let him go because he is such a great dog but happy that he was going to a good home.  When the adopter walked in the door Shredder sat down, started wagging his tail, licking like crazy, and doing the doberman smile.  I gave him all the info on the vitamin supplements, food recommendations, and the medication he was on for a rash.  Shredder walked out the door with his stuffed rabbit in his mouth wagging his tail all the way to the car.  I miss him already and he has only been gone for about 30 minutes.

You did a good thing, fostering this boy and letting him go. {{hugs}} for comfort...

Aww, what a happy story though.  He sounds like he found his human.  ((hugs)) How amazing that you fostered him and gave him a good forever home.  Thats so wonderful!![:)]

I fostered many animals: cats, rabbits and chinchillas.Every time they found a new lovely family I could not help but missing them so much, letting them go in the beginning was such a big pain that i was seriously intentioned to stop accepting this responsability of fostering. But soon after the first adoptions I found that new owners were anxious to share photos, experiences and funny moments with me so that I never completely missed a little furry puffy animals, I just followed their adventures from a bit far away [;)]
Ask the new owner to keep beeing in contact with you, it's much easier to accept the situation [:)]

I know how hard that must be and thats why I cant do it.  Good for you for being so strong... and keep thinking about how you helped him gt a wonderful home, and gave him a wonderful home until then.

That's awesome that he found a good home. I've never fostered (but want to) but I can imagin how hard it is to let them go.

I know exactly how you feel.  2 weeks ago I found a terrific home for my foster.  It was SOOOo hard!  I cried like a baby and I still miss him.. but it was the best possible situation for him.  They've called and told me how much they love him and what a difference he's made in their other dog.  It does help.

But what really helped me is seeing him in his new home.  Contact your Adopter to see if you can do a home visit 1-2 weeks after they've had the dog  (maybe make this a rule for your future fosters?) when you see them in their home, happy and doing well.... it all clicks, well for me anyway.  I immediately felt 100% better and while I still miss him I don't have that weird, unsettled feeling.  It gives me a mental image of how he's doing and how happy he is.  Follow-up has been key.  Hearing how he's doing, settling in, funny stories... makes it SO much easier.

You know you did a wonderful thing, but it takes awhile for your heart to catch up with your brain.  It's such a difficult job as the unsung hero, fostering animals (kids, too!)  You did the best thing possible for him, as Annie quoted to me "If you love something, let it go." (thanks Annie!)  cheesey, but true.

Big hugs to you for your wonderful, wonderful way of helping animals.

Actually when he came to pick him up i said i would love to keep in touch with him.  He then invited me to come walk with him and Shredder along with my 2 dogs around the lake by his house.  One other plus is that he only lives about 10 minutes away.

Thank you k9copwife.  It was my first foster and was worried about how i would handle the saying goodbye part.  I just had to keep telling myself he will be happy and in a better place than he was with a owner that loves him and will give him the care he needs.  I will definitely continue to foster in the future.  It is such a great feeling helping out a pup in need.

Well, how wonderful to witness and facilitate Shredder taking to his new owner so beautifully!  Those kinds of great fits don't come along as often as we'd all hope.... otherwise, there wouldn't be so many dogs in need.  But you helped make it happen.  If you keep fostering, you'll be able to do that again and again - great job!

Bravo!!  I know how hard it is to let a foster go.  My heart still aches for Molly.  You have given Shredder a chance @ a great life.  Bless you.  Hold your head high & know that.

Kinda OT:  Molly is about to go to her furever home.  I suspect it will happen this weekend.
