owners of male dogs: please help!

Okay, Buddy is my first male dog and I have some questions about the male anatomy.  I took Buddy outside to pee after being gone for a few hours.  He rolled over on his back in the grass and was stretching and rubbing his back.  I noticed that the tip of his penis was red.  Not red irritated, but like something red was coming out.  Was this the begins of an erection?  He finished peeing and I brought him back in.  He had his dinner and I took him out again.  He rolled over and the tip of his penis was "normal", but there was what looked like pus at the tip.  By the time I got him inside and turned him over to examine him, it was gone.  I poked and prodded at his penis and nothing else came out.  His penis and surrounding area are normal color and not inflamed and he appeared to urinate without pain and tolerated my poking.  Do you think he ejaculated or is something infected?  Is this something I need to go to my vet about?  I walked him for about 30min. and he peed and marked like usual.  Buddy is 15wks and un-nuetered.

    TIA,
    Sue

Yeah, he probably was just excited, .. nothing to worry about.

My dog likes to hump arms, she's un-spayed. It's quite gross. [:'(]

Perfectly normal...the first time I observed this in a male dog, it freaked me out too.

It's nothing to worry about... It happens to Bailey all the time. Yes, it's gross, but they're dogs, they don't have perverted minds like we do so they don't think about it like that.

The discharge you saw is normal too.  (Something one of my vets liked to call a "normal abnormality").  The joys of little boys!

Having three sons and two male dogs.  They just yell "Mom! the red rocket is out!!"  Like I can do something about it or even need to know.   It's normal..no worries.

ok, everyone's answered the "red rocket" part of the question so I won't.

The discharge was most likely a prepucial infection.  An infection of the prepuce, which is the covering of the sheath.  They are normal in the development of male dogs and will probably amount to nothing.  However keep a close eye on it.  If it persists,  you may want to check with your vet.  Xerxes had a very very persistent infection and it had to be treated with an antibiotic cream and also needed to be flushed.

The infection, as my vet told me, is caused by normal hormones within the developmental male body.  It should subside naturally.

Don't feel dumb cuz I'm going to be asking some questions soon about the whole female doggie thing, as I am getting even closer to getting my first doggie.

You guys are wonderful!  Thank you for your quick responses.  I didn't see Buddy "hump" anything, but he could have done it and I didn't see.  Lately, when I sit on the floor with him to play he is grabbing around my arm more than normal.  I usually just get off the floor.  He must be definitely going through puberty.  :)

He doesn't have to be humping anything...sometimes just the excitement of having someone come home or having company over or even just playing, will be the trigger.

interesting our (fixed) guy has a discharge and on our first visit to the vet (he's a rescue) we asked about it and the vet said it was smegma.  He said that his opening was little tight nothing to worry about but that is why the smegma looked like discharge.  He was about 4 mos at the time and is a year now

I've got two males and I will agree with everyone else that it's completely normal. And they are both neutered, so expect it to continue! Odin has had a little of that discharge, but not very often. I've had more females than males, so at first I was freaked out by it too. I kept telling DH "boys are weird, I don't get it!"
