Rental Houses Allowing Pets!

    Rental Houses Allowing Pets!

Wow they sure know how to be a total PAIN about allowing pets in rental homes.  I'm trying to find a new place by the end of the month because I'm sick of apartment living (and I'm sure Eevee is too), and I'm having a very hard time finding pet-friendly places.  Also, It's going to be even more difficult finding one that will allow more than 2.  I'm trying to get a corgi puppy and the breeder's deadline for me to have esablished myself in a larger place that's better suited for a puppy is next month...

Has anyone else had difficulties with this?  Where is the best place to look for a pet-friendly rental house (tried rentclicks.com, craigslist.com, and rentalhouses.com as well as newspapers)?  Is there ANY way to prove to property owners that my pets are well-behaved?  *rips hair out*

Do you have a dog park or dog clubs nearby? I know at least two dog park regulars who got hooked up with dog-friendly housing because they let the other regulars know they were looking for housing, and that got around to some other regulars who were going to rent their houses.

Also, try finding dog-owning/loving homeowners. I know when we rent out our house, we are probably going to allow pets after an interview with both the owner and the dog.  Because we are responsible owners ourselves, we (think we) know what to look for in a responsible owner/renter.

Other places to search for housing are at churches and community centers. I know our church has a bulletin board for people to post what kind of housing they want.

Tell everyone you talk to that you need a place.  Just bring it up in casual conversation.  Thats how I find jobs, apartments a new bike etc.  Someone always knows someone who knows someone who knows someone.

My landlords want me to get rid of 2 of my dogs.  They think that 3 of them are gonna destroy the house.  No regard for the fact that they are crated when I'm not home and that they aren't even left in a room alone EVER!!  She told me that the house is going to smell like dogs now.  I tried to tell her that huskies dont have a bad body odor but she just said all dogs smell.  Go figure she has a beagle.(no offence to beagle owners on here but I do think they have a stronger odor)  I'm not worried though cause they legally cant evict me for owning dogs.  I'm in Ontario and tenants have more rights than Landlords.[:D]

People I know have had more success advertising that they need a place than by searching the ads.  Also, I always tell people to make up a "dossier" on their pet to show a prospective landlord.  Letters of recommendation from former landlords, the vet, etc. plus diplomas from obedience school or the CGC.

Ahhh... I was wanting to get her CGC... but it probably won't be in the next month... there's still some training left to be done.  I could get a letter from the vet... I take Eevee to Alameda... I bet I could get one from Dr. Fitzgerald (he's met Eevee before and really liked her)!  Of course it probably wouldn't mean anything to them unless they knew who he was lmfao...  I could also try for one from the apartment managers here.  We've been here for like 2 years and the carpet/walls/moldings are still perfect lol...

I'll really have to find some dog clubs...  I'm sure there are bunches around... I just haven't seen them.  I guess advertising that I'm looking for a pet-friendly home is also a good idea.  >^_^<

Astaracheetah, where are you at?  I found some links through the ASPCA when I was looking for a place in HI.  But I have a place in ME that we are looking to rent and will consider animals.

As a renter it is a big problem. Offering an extra security deposit sometimes helps. Taking the dog to meet the owners helps (if the dog is behaving well)

We have 4 rental units and the fact that I allow pets is why I get some of the best tenants - I have a  huge and desperate bunch to choose from. As the owner of the rental property I would MUCH rather have animals than kids in my places.

I rent too, and I always dread having to find another place.
I usually go through newspaper ads, then drive around and look for "for rent" signs.

When I found my current place, I found it through word of mouth, before the previous tenants were out. When I called the landlord, I told him I had a dog, and asked if that would be OK.  He asked for the breed, hoping to get a size out of it. Sierra's a medium-sized dog - she's not tiny (which is what the guy was looking for - apparently small dogs do less damage?).  I told him she's a mutt, and he said that he wanted to meet us at his house in a couple days for an interview. He specifically said he wanted to meet the dog.

This wasn't a problem for me, Sierra loves people - but not other dogs. The landlord has 2 Shih Tzus. The meeting was a bit of a disaster, even though I told him that Sierra doesn't like other dogs (they got loose....). But he rented the place to us.

Now whenever he comes over, he always states that Sierra's the most well behaved dog he's ever seen. I know this is good for me - if I ever need to find another place, I know he'll give me a good reference.

But I know for sure it helps when you offer these:
    Extra damage deposit
    References
    Offer to meet the dog
Offer to view your current living space (excellent opportunity to show that you can control the dog)

    So to conclude my essay...
I hope everything goes well for you! [;)]

It appears as though that petrent place only advertises apartments and hotels... >-.-<  I'm looking for a rental house.

I'm in Colorado, in the Denver area (Centennial/Littleton/Englewood), preferably Centennial.  I only have a month... I'm at the end of my rope here... >;.;<

If I don't have a house by April 1st, the puppy I want goes to another home.

I'll continue searching like mad at the usual places and also try ASPCA if they even advertise things in Colorado...

I always look for places in the newspaper and also drive around prospective areas looking for "for rent" signs.  As long as the newspaper add doesn't say "no pets" then I'll call and make an appt to look at it.  I make the best impression on them that I can and then once we've discussed my rental and employment history and I've hooked them with that, THEN I'll bring up having pets.  In my experience, once they think they've found a good tenant they're more apt to allow pets.

I can't afford most of the stuff in those links (Looking for prices around 1,000 per month), and the ones I can either don't allow more than 1 pet or aren't in my area.  Thanks anyway... >;.;<

I'm going to get another paper today.

Have you called any rental management companies?
Before we ended up buying our house we were looking for a rental... I went out to the company told them EXACTLY what I wanted then told them how many pets I had at the time... THEY called the owners to see who was willing and then I went to look at the houses available with willing owners.
We ended up buying so it's a moot point but maybe it would work for you?

I've always offered up extra pet deposit money and that seemed to help a bit!

To everyone who needs to rent with a dog:

Now that I'm in Alaska it's not so hard, but it would be if I wanted to live right IN town, which I don't. That being said...

I found that when I had Stevie and Sofie that all I had to do was have the landlord meet Stevie and he had no problem whatsoever renting to me, even if he'd said NO DOGS originally. Stevie was that kinda guy, just a person in a dog suit.

So if you have a very personable dog like that, very well behaved and interested in meeting people, then you might have some luck asking the landlords just to meet the dog first before they say no. It worked for me several times. Once they met him they could see it was no problem and they actually looked forward to seeing him when they came over! I paid pet deposits, too.

By all means if that works, be sure you don't mess up and leave the house or yard in a mess when you move out. That makes it harder for everyone who needs to rent with animals! Be responsible and take the blame and fix things if they get damaged.

One landlord I had required that I shampoo the carpet every six months, that was the caveat. That was fine with me, I just rented a machine and did it.
