    Sniff that Marijuana

I want to train my dog, how to sniff drugs... Just Marijuana.  What are the steps i need to do to accomplish this?

This is a really odd question.

I think it would be a great trick??

you could not teach this legally.  scent discrimination is the same regardless of the scent selected.  teach the dog to find something else.
    • Gold Top Dog
why is that?  will the dog get high or something?
    • Gold Top Dog
no,  it is a controlled substance.  To train for scent discrimination you need the target scent as well as other distraction scents.  You would be in violation of the law to have the marijuana.  Individuals who train for drug detection have a relationship with law enforcement to address those legalities

there is a web site where you can legally get drug "scents" they are not the actual drug but just scents and you teach them to find the scent the same way you teach them any scent reward them when they find it  put the scent on something high value get them to retireve that item  then put it on something lower value and give them the high value reward for finding the lower value reward then start hiding it.
here is one site for legal scents but do a web search for narcotic scents and drug scents

also do a search for scent tubes this is the tool they usually use to train with.
I don't see any reason to train your dog to do it but you can if you want to

Why cant you teach him to sniff something else? Will he constantly have acess to this drug and thats why you want him to learn to sniff it out?
You can teach him to sniff out treats, and other things, wanting to teach a dog to sniff marijuana 'just for fun' sounds odd to me, I mean imagine if you walk past a drug dealer and your dog sniffs him out? Can you say dead dog?

dogs with longer muzzles typically do better as scent detection dogs than those with shorter muzzles.

any dog can do scent work but it is harder  for brachiocephalic dogs but do remeber they have used boxers for police dogs in the past so the can do it. try tracking any dog can track  there are yorkies and pugs titled in tracking

ok, so how do you teach a dog to find a toy or a treat.  What are the steps?
    • Gold Top Dog
How old are you? I read your other post and you seem young. How long have you had a dog? Have you thought about taking a class?

this is what I would do if I was teaching a dog to find a toy  is first name the toy  ie every time the dog plays with the stuffed bunny say give me bunny, go get bunny, catch bunny,  then star sending the dog to the toy saying find bunny, then put bunny  progressivly in more hidden spots say half cover it with a blanket, hide it half under the couch, next to a bush, then hide it under the bush, or under the blanket in the toy box on top, in the toy box on the bottom make the spots progressivly harder only after the dog is sucessful at the previous location several times, vary the location and difficulty and have a big party for the right choice say good find bunny the dog will start visually searching and end up scenting if you hide it well. I would also recomend that you only give one command unless you dog stops looking I have a friend who tried to teach this and it evolved into a game of hotter/ colder as everytime the dog goes away from the item she says find it so her dog knows to go back the other way and try
