    Thought I would join in!

[:D]Hello everyone!  I JUST found this section existed.  I am not too new, but have really enjoyed reading some of the intros on here from folks I have been posting with for the past few months.  It is nice to read a little more about them and I have met so many nice people on this forum.[8D]

I live in Southern California and am a greyhound NUT. I have always had pets and I grew up with dogs.   My parents always had dogs they rescued from the local shelter or ones that they found.   About 8 years ago I started volunteering with a local greyhound rescue because I had always thought the breed was so sweet and had the best dispositions.  Turns out I was addicted from the first day I volunteered and it was only a matter of months before I had my first greyhound Gumby.  Soon after came my spooky boy Petey.  We had both dogs for about 5-6 years and then lost both of them within six months of each other.  DH and I were devastated by the loss and he said he couldn#%92t handle the thought of losing anymore dogs for awhile so we went 2 years before just recently adopting again.[:(]

I have 2 cats Quincey (12) and Barnaby (11) and even though I love them…the dogs are my world! Jimmy James is almost 7 and Prudence is almost 3 and I have had them for 6 months (JJ) and 3 months (Pru).  Both had previous multiple homes and things just didn#%92t work out. They both have a lot of issues, but that is why I chose them (or rather they chose me![;)]).  Greys are such easy dogs and 90% of them can go to almost any home with no problems, but the 10% continue to bounce from home to home and some end up staying crated for the majority of their lives.  Neither DH nor I can handle that so we have decided to ONLY take the ones that have problems because we feel we can give them a fighting chance at a happy life and will exhaust all efforts before ever considering returning them.

I have posted several pics of my dogs that I don#%92t think I have posted before. I absolutely adore these guys so I thought I would share them with you.

Now to maek it more interesting for those of you who I have gotten to know a little through posts, here are some things you probably DON#%92T know about me already:[;)]

    1)      I am an only child which was great growing up, but becomes more of a burden as you get older and have to care for aging family members. My mother has had diabetes for over 45 years and has almost tripled her life expectancy. She is disabled now and lives only a mile from me so I can help care for her. She is a wonderful woman and has been an inspiration in my life.

    2)      I call him my “DH” (dear husband for those of you who are newbies), but we technically aren#%92t married. Oh sure…common law and all after almost 11 years of living together but not legal on paper.  We met when I was 21 and he was 30. He would bring his kids in to the restaurant I worked at every other Friday night when it was his weekend with the kids. He is the most wonderful man and makes me laugh every single day!  If I didn#%92t have him in my life I would be hard pressed to find someone else who would challenge my way of thinking the way he does or see joy in the smallest of things.

    3)      “DH” has 2 adult kids that I ADORE! The boy will be 22 in a week and the girl is turning 20 next month.  It has been such a joy to have them in my life and even though I didn#%92t have a chance to be in their lives until they were 7 and 9, I feel I got to experience the best years! I couldn#%92t love them more if I gave birth to them myself and I am proud to see so much of what their dad and I taught them come out as they become wonderful adults. [sm=dance.gif]

Now back to the topic of dogs…here are my pups!! [sm=clapping%20hands%20smiley.gif]

LOL!!![sm=lol.gif]     Well at least I tried to give some of the folks I regularly correspond with some OTHER facts that you wouldn't know and  some different piccies!

Thanks you guys....I enjoyed reading both of your intros too and am so glad that we have some sighthound fans on this forum! The greyhound forum I am also on is great...but I don't have the same feeling of bonding and connectedness as I do on i-dog!

Greg...please continue to pm me to keep me updated on how your continual quest to work with a grey rescue goes.  I am keeping my fingers crossed for you![:D]

Same here, I'm on Houndtalk.com and everyone's nice there, but I really feel like an outsider.  The personalities don't seem to come out like they do on this board.

That is it exactly!!! there is far less conflict and everyone is so nice, but I always feel like I don't belong.  I LOVE looking through the pictures under "cute and funny things greyhounds do" and it is great to look up breed specific information, but it is just not the same.

This feels more like "family".  There are a bunch of folks I pm with here daily ...I am teaching twin how to cook and have mailed her some cookbooks so that we can have a weekly "cooking night and recipe comparison". We pm every day and I love it. There are about a dozen people on i-dog I feel that I would be friends with if we lived close by...I don't feel the same way about the greyhound forum and I don't know what the difference is.

Oh, I was glad to read this!  I just wanted you to know I always look for your posts and enjoy hearing about your dogs and things going on with them and you.

Those pictures are great!  They are so sweet!

Can I ask a question??? Is it true that grey's do not "sit"??  The ones that I walked did not and I was told that grey's don't.

[:D]Thanks Lori!  I love hearing about Willow too (as though you didn#%92t already know that I am totally in love with her![;)])and I also follow your threads too and worry about her when she is having problems!  I honestly don#%92t particularly care for Chows, but there is just something about Willow that makes her irresistible to me.[8D]
Greys absolutely can sit…they just don#%92t do it very often.  I am not sure it is the most comfortable position for them because of their long legs. All of mine have only “sit” on rare occasions (usually so that they can bring their back leg up to their neck to scratch an itch).  I often see some “sitting” in their crate at the rescue, but I think this is more just to change positions a bit since they are crated most the day. You can teach them to sit on command the same way that you teach any dog, but I have never done this.  I sort of figure if it is not their preference then why make them do it. I teach them to “wait” instead (like when we cross the street or are waiting for dinner…etc..)

JJ and Pru-bear say “thanks for the compliments Willows mama![:D]

Good to get to know you a bit more and the pictures of the very elegant JJ and Pru are wonderful!

We meet up with rescued greys from time to time at our dog parks and I have been asked by a few of them just what Pofi is...which of course I don't know.  But some features do seem to be greyhoundish including the way he vocalizes...

Po would like to show you his greyhound impersonation - do you think maybe you see some grey in him?

His muzzle looks a little like a sighthound.  Sighthounds definately do vocalize differently than some breeds.  Whatever Pofi is ...he is a beauty! I love his coloring and his gentle eyes. [;)]

Georgie...I love your greyhound mix Buster![8D]

Megan...I hope the greys are well behaved at your doggie day care![:D]

[8D]Hey there!  I was dissapointed when we went to NYC a couple months back...I NEVER saw a greyhound!  Apparently according to a forum member who lives next to Central Park (I am soooo jealous of her) there are several greyhounds that frequent the park.

I guess they are around but they just may not have as many greyhound rescues.   Hope you get to meet one eventually!  Looks like you have quite the "gang"!![;)]

I love your Intro! I definitely did learn some things. You know, Shelly, this forum would not be the same without you...I probably would not even come on here as much. You have really made it a wonderful experience and I am so glad that we have our TWO thread! [;)]
