may be borrowing trouble but... alert to show folk

This was cross posted on a field trial list.FYI on what PETA is up to. Please forward to all those you know who do any type of dog sport/activity:Flyball, obedience, rally, agility, conformation, tracking, lure coursing, disc dog, field trials, SAR, etc
so that they will know that this can happen to them anyplace, anytime!!!

    ****************************************************
    Franklin, TN
PETA was on the grounds today -- mostly taking pictures of dogs in
crates ("animal cruelty";) and causing a scene. After lunch an attempted theft of a GSD created a lock down of the building. An announcement was made on the loudspeaker just before groups that the State Troopers were called in and would be helping in "security" for the handlers and their dogs! As of then only one door guarded by law enforcement and watched by club members remains open to come in or go out. Handlers got their friends/assistants to watch their set ups while they were in the ring showing in the groups.

Now Franklin, Tennesse is only about 4 hours from
    Louisville, and the
consensus of opinion was that this was a "dress rehersal" for the big
event. Anyone planning on taking dogs, bring padlocks for your crates and use the buddy system. Introduce yourself to people set up around you if you are crated in the building, and take turns watching the dogs. Rumors are circulating that this could end up going back to the national level
like it did several years ago when handlers started carrying baseball bats!
Please think twice before leaving your dogs unattended at any show.

Please crosspost... full permission from Franklin show chair...
I am the show chairman for the Nashville Kennel Club and the cluster
chairman for the Country Music Cluster in Franklin, TN. This story has
gotten out of hand and untrue. No one stole a dog. A man and small child
were at the shows. Someone overheard him say that he thought it was cruel
to keep the dogs in the cages. He took pictures of a few dogs (all were in
appropriate size crates and well taken care of). We were alerted to look
for him and make sure nothing happened. We never found him or the child.
We had alerted our security and watched entrances to the bldg and let people
enter through one entrance. A man fitting the description was seen with a
boxer. He was at a crate, when asked if he was from PETA, he said yes, he
was. Then he proceeded to put the boxer in the crate and leave. It turned
out he was the owner of the boxer and a dog person known to the boxer
people. He thought he was just being funny when he said it and didn't know
we were under the impression that someone might be at the show to cause
problems (which it turned out no one was ever identified).
He apologized for causing the commotion.
PLEASE STOP THIS RUMOR!!! No one tried to steal a GSD or any other dog. We
took precautionary measures to keep any potential problems from arising.
    Thank you,
    Brenda Weiss, Nashville KC

I don't care if this is true or not, but it scares me and I will definitely be even more careful at shows from now on!

True or not, it's always wise to keep an eye or have someone stay with the non-performing, crated dogs.  There are many horrible people out there.

THere were several dogs stolen from the last show in Greensboro, NC near me (well, "-ish" - nothing's really NEAR me [:D]). Anyway, it's always a good idea to take the kind of precautions described in the article, short of the baseball bat, perhaps. I don't have padlocks on my crates currently but all my old ones did (boo hoo). As I travel more I will probably get crates that lock again - thanks for the reminder!
