    Cat Allergies

My kitty Puma is allergic to dogs... I'm not sure if its the dander or the Saliva i'm pretty sure its the saliva she is ok when the dogs leave for a few weeks then they come back and its licking holes in her self again... I need some advice for medications to combat this... allergy testing will cost me 500$[:o] so it will take me a bit to save up that much. I hate seeing my baby with the collar on and the cortizone shots make me un easy. If anyone knows anything to help Puma please let me know...

is she allergic to dogs or simply stressed out by the dogs? I'd want to know before treating for allergies. She could be licking herself raw simply from stress.
First I'd try something like Bach's REscue Remedy when she's with the dogs to see if she might relax enough to stop the self mutilation.
Did the vet prescribe Prednisone at all to help? I had to do that with a foster who had food allergies. She took 5 doses of pred then was slowly weaned off. Then an antihistimine to maintain (have the name at home).
But I'd want to make sure it's allergies and not stress first.

Its definetly allergies she loves to play with my puppy. When Jody is calmed down Puma will go up and lick her and try and clean her. She has little scabs all over the back of her body mainly where the dog plays with her I am 85% sure its dog saliva because if it were the dander when my puppy or the previous dog I was living with it would leave for two weeks at a time and my cat would heal and everything would be ok if it were the dander she never would have healed. The prednisone didnt work it was suppose to increase the cortizone shot but it didnt work so far thats the only thing that has. But he only had me give her half a tablet a day

the foster I had was a snowshoe siamese and she had to stop taking the pred after a couple of doses cause it turned her fur all gray - apparently a rare side effect but it happened.
I had to switch her to chlortabs (Walmart brand was fine). They main ingredient is chlorpheniramine maleat....1/4 tablet once a day for 6 days. She cleared right up. She was adopted late December and to the best of my knowledge she hasn't required a repeat dosage.
But please check w/your vet first. Not being a vet all I can say is this is used regularly by the cat rescue group I foster for when a cat doesn't respond well to prednisone (on the advice of their vet). It's safe for cats in small doses and it worked great for Lonnie. She stopped multilating herself after one dose although it took days for her scabs to heal over. She had her head a mess!!!! I thought she'd gotten into a fight until I caught her itching her head like a maniac.
