Don't want a cat out of the house.....?

Don't want a cat out of the house.....?

My sister has a cat who is about a year old and for the longest I have tried by all means to keep her from escaping out of the house.  It is the hardest thing to do especially when your other family members do not help.  I don't want her to go out because we have a busy street infront of the house and already a cat got run over a few weeks ago.  It would be great if she would only stay in our yard but she goes everywere.  I also don't like the flea part.  It is briving me nuts!!!! I have her on frontline but still she has a couple of live fleas.  And then my father complains about her and then I have no choice but to tell all (my mom, dad, & brother) that the flea problem is nobodies falt but theirs because they keep on letting the cat out of the house.  Any suggestions?

Our cat used to do it when she was younger (now all she wants to do is sleep). Get a laser pen. Every-time she runs out, turn it on, let her see it. She'll chase it ... home. Then shut the door. Laser pan was our remote control for getting her back in the house. Hopefully, your cat won't see anything more intriguing than that.

We had a cat that HAD to be outside too. Nothing worked to keep that little monster in. He'd been stepped on, squished in doors, chased away, trampled by dogs, you name it. He even managed to tear out several of our metal screens in his escape attempts. NOTHING would stop him. Once he was out that door - he would take off. I don't think he'd even glance at a laser pointer. And he wandered, too. I remember driving by a house down the block and noticing a beautiful cat on their porch. I though "Wow! They have a cat just like Dweezil! Wait! That IS Dweezil!"

Then, one day, he never came home. I walked the streets of our small town for days. Called the vet clinic & police. Put flyers up. Even put a large ad in the local paper where I work with a $200 reward. Nothing. I still miss my 'Weezers. I wish I knew of a way to keep a determined cat inside. I know we tried everything.

I had one like that too....my sweeet lovely dilute calico, Sessy.
She would rip curtains off the windows, throw herself at the door meowing NOW, she cracked a basement window throwing herself at it.
And she never went outside the first year of her life. She managed to get out one day and that was it.
She also disappeared when she was 9 years old.

Fleas - Switch to Advantage for cats.  Your vet will sell it, and you must specify how much your kitty weighs when getting it.  They have under 9 lbs and over 9 lbs.  I pay $14 per dose.  Frontline worked for a couple of months for me, and worked less each time until it was totally useless.  Advantage is much, much better-- it kills adult fleas, larvae, and it does it fast, keeping them from spreading and infesting the house.  Even if they jump on your kitty outside and jump off inside, they will die shortly after.

As far as keeping her inside....  If everyone else in the house is just going to let her out, what can you do?  You need their co-operation or it'll never work.  There's no magical stay-in-doors pill, the whole family has to be consistent or there's just no point.  And please do keep her inside; feline fataility rates sky-rocket for those pets who are allowed to go outside.  :(

Well I dont know what you may think about this idea, but here it goes.
My neighbor used to tie her kitty by her collar in their backyard, again for a very busy street we lived on.
This cat was taught as a kitten about his lead, I dont know how an adult cat would take it, you could maybe try a little at a time. I`d rather do that than see it as road kill.

I used to put my Missy on the dog run when I was outside working in the garden. She'd sit like a statue afraid to move LOL I think the rope was heavier than her (she weighs a whooping 6.2 pounds)

I would be terrified to try this except when I could be available to directly supervise the outside time.  Doing this means kitty can't get away from other animals very well, if at all.

Yes, I know, but........it was also in their backyard. you would have to sit out with it to protect while getting a liitle outside air, or get a kennel, but even then a dog could scare it barking outside the kennel. sorry my only suggestions, or maybe give the kitty to someone else.

I harness trained my two cats and take them out for walks once a day that seems to help a lot...you will get some ummm strange looks, but I don't mind since it for the safety of my animals.  If you do decided to try this route I would really recommend a Walking Jacket rather then a normal harness from the pet store.  the normal ones my cats could always wiggle out of, but they have never gotten out of there Walking Jacket.  The only place the walking jackets are available is on line I can't remember the site right now, but I'll try finding it for you if you want.

Yup...we tie our Kleio out as well. She used to try everything under the sun to sneak outside when we let the dogs out back. So we got a 10' lead and attached it to one of our porch posts in the back yard. Whenever we're outside with the dogs or out doing yardwork, we hook Kleio's collar up to the lead and let her sit outside. I can honestly say that it did help with her desperation to be outside. I guess because it's not such a novelty anymore.

    Good luck!

I have a water spray bottle next to the door because my cat can sometimes be naughty and try to escape. Everytime he goes to the door he gets sprayed, It doesnt matter if he was just going to take a look or try to sneak out. He has learned to stay away from it because he hates water.
