weird sound....

    weird sound....

Our kitten, we think she was born around July 15th, makes this weird coowing sound. She makes it when she is playing or when she is outside our door in the morning and trying to get us up. We aren't sure what the sound is, we know it's not her going in heat yet, we've asked the vet. Just wondering if anyone has had there cat make this noise before, the vet looked at us like we were crazy (it wasn't our normal vet).
    Thanks,

oh and when we get her going with one of those long sticks with the long string attached and the feathers at the end, she breathes really heavaly if we do not stop her after a while, is this something we should be conserndered about or is it just another noise they make and we might think it's her breathing weird?

    thanks!!

I don't know about the sound, it doesn't sound harmful to me at all, I've had cats make weird sounds  too and it was nothing.
But I will say about the heavy breathing after play...that sounds a lot like a heart murmur to me. My kitten had one but he grew out of it..most of the time unless they are very severe a heart murmur(which is essentially a hole in the hearts valves) will correct itself. But you have to be very careful not to over exert the heart while it is still forming. Has you vet listened for one of those? Your vet should be able to hear it with their stethoscope(sp).

I was told by my vet that open mouthed panting is also an indicator of a heart murmur. (My kitten did it once, and thats how we found out he had one.)

What I did was I put honey on top of my cats normal food and fed that to him for a month, when I went back to the vet his heart murmur was gone. I read that honey(bee products in general) stimulate heart growth. I'm not sure how true this is or not..but it's harmless to try.

    Sorry this was so long.

Thanks! She goes back in about a month to get spayed and declawed in the front(something we weren't going to do but she is tearing up our carpeting). I will ask then about it, I have to call shortly to make the appointment.
    Thanks again,

Please dont declaw! Declawing is a cruel procedure where the cat is left helpless and unable to defend itself. Its a painful procedure, and many cats refuse to use the litterbox because the digging motion is very painful for a declawed cat. They know they cant defend themselves and many become fear biters. Imagine if your precious girl escaped outside and was caught by a dog or a not so friendly cat? She would have no way of defending herself.

Its like having the vet remove your dogs teeth because he/she likes to chew. Buy her a scratching post and redirect her attention.

I recommend 100% using Soft Claws as an alternative. They are very useful and look wonderful. Ive got a bunch for Ceci, even though she isnt a scratcher.

PLEASE DON'T DECLAW.  What Lizzie says is true.  My daughter is a vet tech and has had to be a part of this procedure.  It is extremely painful for the cat.  Please try to find another way.  Scratching post.  Spray the areas on the carpet she wants to claw with the Deterrent spray sold in pet stores.  Try a spray bottle with water in it and spray when she is in the act of scratching the carpet.  Just PLEASE don't declaw.

The sad thing is I think the OP is going to declaw. I PM'd her and she thinks that because a stray they adopted had already been declawed and had no/little side effects that things will be fine with this kitten.

    Declawing is cruel and heartless

so my husband and i are cruel and heartless because we have different views.....i don't think thats a very fair thing to say our three animals get the best of everything and i never said we wouldn't try soft claws.........and you act like we haven't tryed anything.......we've tryed everything accept soft claws......we were not going to get her declawed at all at first....we were told we could declaw her at 3 mths...but we didn't and it's not because we wanted to get a "discount" it's because we weren't going to declaw her. We had decided we would give her a chance to prove to us that she could turn around and not do those things, because she is a kitten.....hence the reason we were waiting until 5 mths....
also it's the experience with more then one cat on the declawing thing.....where cats are nice and non-agressive afterwards....the declawing comment about cats biting and such after is just like the bullsh** comment that if you spay your cat they will get fat..........

Spaying=Fat is a whole different story. If you actually think about it, what im saying makes perfect sense.

Declawing is an extremely painful procedure. How would you like to have your fingernails removed, plus one digit? Cats dig when they use the box and I am quite sure it will be very painful to do after the declaw.

Is it worth taking the chance that she will refuse the box because it hurts? Your first cat may have turned out great but is it worth the risk that your cat may become 'paranoid' because she doesnt have her claws?

I think chopping off her claws plus a bone just to save your carpet is way too vain. But hey, thats you

    it's the same thing............!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this is a point-less arguement though...you have your thoughts, i have mine.....no matter what i say you will still think that i am a mean and horrible person....im actually waiting for the "you shouldn't own animals comment", it's close to next right..??

I have 5 cats in my house.. until recently I had 8 but sent a couple to live with my mom. My cats range in age from a few months to about 4 years old. All of my cats have their claws. If they stick their claw in my carpet or furniture every now and then, so be it.. I can replace my carpet or furniture, my cat can't grow a bone back in it's foot.. which is exactly what they remove when they take the claw.  Not even after an almost $500 trip to the vet when one of them punctured a hole in my dogs eye did I do it.

I would never leave them without a way to defend themselves and put them through that pain. They are actually amputating the last joint of the cat's paw when they do it. [linkhttp://www.declawing.com/]http://www.declawing.com/[/link] also look at this one.. shows a picture of where they amputate at [linkhttp://www.declawing.com/htmls/declawing.htm]http://www.declawing.com/htmls/declawing.htm[/link]

I just use a regular nail clippers on my cat's claws and it works pretty good. It's just like trimming a dog's nails.

I do think it's very cruel to do to an animal. Would you be willing to undergo that procedure yourself? Animals feel pain the same way we do.. I liken the cruelty of declawing to those people who will clip a dog's ears with scissors when they're puppies and try to say they won't feel it or remember it.

the way i see it you want a nice home then dont get pets , how would you like the tips of all your fingers to be cut off? makes me sick , all because of a little carpet get floor boards
    • Gold Top Dog
My home is 'nice'. Simple, but nice. Its very clean, smallish, and no carpets. I have a small rug in the living room and yes Ceci does dig her claws into it but I dont mind because I dont see any damage. She just digs in her claws a bit, then goes about her way.

Is this what the kitten is doing?
    • Gold Top Dog
no she will do it over and over again, we have tryed the water bottle and we have tryed scratching posts....there is actually parts of the carpet that she probably got stuck in and pulled out the treads...another thing to worry about...what if she gets stuck and we aren't home and she pulls and pulls and pulls the claw out..and begins bleeding...??? i wouldn't be able to bare knowing that happened and i wasn't home to help her.....

I think out of all your options, Soft Claws are the best alternative to declawing. I don't want to jump on the bandwagon, but declawing is a truely painful process for the animal. With the soft claws, your kitten can keep her nails, and you can keep your house looking nice. I hear that they are relatively inexpensive, too. Just my [sm=2cents.gif].
