I think thats a good idea, don't know about a sacrifice but someone could just want the cat for Halloween then get rid of it. =)

my local shelter won't adopt out black cats before Halloween, they haven't in years.

Our shelters won't adopt out black cats either.  I for one don't have a problem with it.  If it will save at least one life from those sick people out there, then I'm happy!

That's interesting. I've never heard of that. The shelter here actually is having a sale on orange or black cats for the month of October.

unless there is some proof that black cats are being sacrificed or otherwise harmed during the halloween season it doesnt make sense. i think one of the people in the article said it well "If somebody comes in here and they're strange enough that we'd question why they're adopting a black cat on Halloween, then we're probably not going to adopt any animal to them,".

I don't think the month makes a difference.  They can always wait until November to practice their vicious "rituals".  And you also cannot go on appearance or behavior.  The weirdos out there have adjusted well to peoples' perceptions.  There's no fool proof way to protect our black feline friends ... [:(]

[:D]I love my black cat..I think black cats are so beautiful.  The shelter I got him from over 10 years ago also would not adopt out black cats this time of year and would caution those who owned them to keep them inside.

mine never go outside so I don't worry.

We've had a couple of awful incidents in the Phoenix area of black cats being killed around Halloween in pretty horrific ways.  I don't remember the specifics (they were a few years ago), but I certainly took note and held my black cat a whole lot closer when I heard.  I honestly don't see a problem with the shelters holding off on adopting them out if there is any chance it will spare them from a similar awful fate.

I don't know what adoption rates are in other areas, but around here, any cat from the local shelter will cost between $100 and $150.  I think that alone would discourage most if not all of the people that want to use the cat as a prank.

I have a black cat and I have to keep him locked in my house during halloween because the neighborhood kids like to be mean to him, they cut his whiskers off one year on halloween, and they always ooh and ah at him when it is around halloween time, it makes me nervous.

I'll post more recent pictures later...this one is from hurricane katrina..he was stalking things through the debris(sp) in our yard. He is very territorial..if any other animal other than ours comes onto his "property" he gets very upset.

I call him the panther of my yard.

    Why so HIGH??

Wow I can adopt 5 cats for that price!

All animals from our local shelter are spayed or nutered before they are put on the adoption floor.  Plus they give you alot of freebies when you adopt.

But I think more than anything, people will pay it.  Which I think is amazing that people around here will pay pet store prices to help out a shelter.

Yup, our adoption fee is $80 from the shelter.

If you go to Pet Smart and adopt one of our cats out of the cages up there they are $50.

If a cat comes in spayed/neutered it is only $10. I personally think $80 is way too much..I wish they would drop the cost, I think it would get a lot more cats adopted...
