    good breeder

OK, so some people may remember wayyyy back I had friends who wanted a puggle.  Well they have done more research since and decided on a pomeranian.  So, I told them some brief stuff to look for in a breeder and did a search on here but cannot find threads I know exist about what makes a good breeder.  Can anyone think of easy things.  I already said:

    1) the breeder does health testing
    2) the breeder is willing to do a health guarantee or take the dog back if for any reason you cannot care for it
    3) the breeder suggests/requires spay or neuter
    4) the breeder does not have a bunch of different kinds of dogs available (byb) and that they do not breed too often
    5) the breeder shows their dogs and is AKC registered (I said this would be helpful but not necessarily needed)

I told them dog shows are a better place to find a good breeder than the ads in the classifieds in our newspaper.  They aren't against getting a rescue either but haven't found one nearby.  They'd like to get the dog in early June so now are moving forward with the search for a good breeder.  I told them to look at the AKC site but wherelse can they find a good breeder?

Thanks for all the help.  If someone can find a previous link about this that would work too!

Sometimes a local kennel club will give breeder referals. That could be a starting place.

also asking the breeder for some #s that have got his/her pups before and talk to them see how the pup is doing and health issues does the pup have any...those kind of things

Maybe you could pass this on to them

Sooner, that is an excellent resource, I am book-marking it. A parent at my son's school was asking questions like this, she is a novice who would like to get a dog, but has no idea where to start. I can forward this to her.

I just emailed that link to my friends.  I also bookmarked it for future use.  Thanks!

In Oregon, there is a group called Responsible Dog Breeders of Oregon.  I would assume there is a similar organitzation in other states as well.  Here, it's listed in the phone book!
