    EPM - Equine Protaozoal Myeloencephalitis

R asked me to research EPM as there is a horse with it he may consider taking on. He didn't give me any details except I could tell he is really smitten with this horse. I googled it and I have a meeting with my Vet on Thurs. to ask some questions. Do any of you have any knowledge or experience with EPM?

I don't know much about it, I have a gal out at the ranch who has a horse with it.  ... it seems the worst part of the whole thing was figuring out that it was EPM in the first place.  But, I really don't know much more than that.  If I run into her soon, I'll be sure to ask, though.

Sorry that I'm not more help!

I have known quite a few horses with EPM whose symptoms have gotten much better and they can now be ridden consistantly.  What is it exactly that you were looking for?

We are just asking opinions and gathering info. I have a meeting with my Vet today and then will touch base with R. His main concern is that the horse doesn't get auctioned or destroyed if there is an option for a quality life. I assured him that I am always available if time/care or space is an issue but it is his call. (unless my hubby sees the horse [sm=uhoh.gif])

The only horse I've ever known with it was PTS.

If you are looking for a show horse, I would steer away from a hore dx'ed with EPM (unless maybe the horse would be a leadline pony - it may take a while for it to be sound - if the symptoms do lessen).  As a light pleasure horse who won't be going over hard ground, I might consider a horse with EPM if he was rideable. Most of the horses I have seen with EPM have lost some of their symptoms, but a few remained in a few of the horses and a few had to be pts. Either way, the horse is still a horse and has love to give :) No horse deserves to be sent to auction :(
