    I discovered gravity

I took a spill off of Ranger yesterday. After all these years, you'd think I'd know how to tighten a cinch. We were running the poles when the saddle slipped. I hit the back of my head, but fortunately I'm very hard-headed -- it's the other end that hurts. I may have to ride with a pillow strapped to my butt after this.
It's a long way to the ground when you ride a 17-hand horse.

I can relate to that, I fell last spring, my fault, we decided to fight and I lost!  It took me 3 months before my shoulder quit hurting!!! I remember the days when I'd get back on and not even have a bump.  I guess old age is creeping up.

lol...while it has been a while since I've had a spill (knock on wood) I have to say that the coolest thing that has ever happened to me when being thrown was when I was on a trail ride one day my horse trotted down this hill and on the way up the other side he bucked..I wasn't expecting it at all..the next thing I know I'm in the air and I somehow must have done a flip because I landed standing up next to KC (my horse) facing his rear!

PS...just in case you're wondering..I only ride english..that includes on the trails.

Wow, I wish I could land on my feet when I fall off! At least my bottom is VERY well padded.

I was pleased with Ranger, though. When I came off, he just stopped and stood there calmly while I re-saddled him and got back on. He could have high-tailed it back to the barn with the saddle flapping underneath him, but he didn't.

Sorry about the spill Shirley. Are we going to see the duct tape and pillow pictures?
    Good boy Ranger.

I really have no idea how it happened ..I was really shocked though!
My horse doesn't run off either. He's too lazy. My last horse (who I had to put down at 32 yrs old) would though.

I think one of the worst spills I had was when I was about 6 or 7. It was feeding time and I wanted to ride...not sure why my mom let me but we took my Welsh/shetland cross pony into the "indoor" arena. It didn't have a door or gate to block the horses from getting out if they wanted, but there was a 2x4 laying there and my mom put it up across the door thinking he couldn't fit. I was cantering my pony around when he suddenly took off at a gallop toward the door. ....Needless to say he made it under and the board caught me in the pelvis and catapoulted me off the back of my pony. Luckily I was ok..but it sure hurt!

Yeaouch, Shirley!  We all get complacent about the things we are ;proficient at and don't double check stuff and do things we know we should (and teach newbies to do!)  ... I've fallen off a loose saddle.. the pony i was riding knew how to really blow up when tightening the girth, a trick my horses hadn't known.  Silly me!  I learned the hard way!  What's this.... no helmet?  Shame, shame!  [8|]

Awww, what a good boy Ranger!

How's the prep for the show coming??

Most of my horses have come down with colds -- coughs and snotty noses. So I haven't been able to do much in the way of training for the show. I hope the horses are fully recovered by then (it's just two weeks away), but I'm not too hopeful.

Maybe they'll have to postpone the show due to bad weather.

Appylady, Do you do anything in the case of a cold? Jet came down with a runny nose Thurs. and I of course had visions of some horrible disease! lol I had a call into my fave Vet with a dog question so I asked him and he said not to worry unless his temp goes up or he goes off his feed. (a whole nother level of panic if that happens [sm=eek.gif])
We went for a short, light ride yesterday with my friend J and he coughed a few times.

I hope you get to do your show.

No, I'm not treating their colds, just letting it run it's course. They'll be fine. No one is acting sick and they certainly haven't gone off their feed. They'd have to be dead to do that. LOL!

    applylady, I know the feeling...

Even though I don't have my own, I've worked at several barns just to be around horses.  This one barn raised Rockies and I saddled up their stud one day.  ha ha... I'd ridden him before so didn't think anything of it.  Well, the guy holding the bridle was pulling down on his reins and he didn't like that too much, so up he went after I had just touched the saddle with my butt.  Off I went off the back....  oops.  I got back on of course.  ;)  One other time before that I'd taken him down to the field (all fenced in) to gait around the track and he has an AWESOME gait and very fast.  Well the gait turned into a gallop and we ended up back in the barn after a few circuits of the fields with me just hanging on!   Ok so yeah, I've learned my lesson.  ;)

On another ride I looked back at a fellow rider and saw her flying up and over the front of her horse and landing on the ground in a sitting position!  I couldn't believe what I saw, and she still had the reins!  This was a little girl, 13 maybe, on a 16 hand quarter horse!  Apparently he had bucked at just the right moment to send her up and forward.
