    Standardbred

Anyone here have a Standardbred?  One of the rescues I massage is a Standardbred gelding and he makes some of the goofiest faces and does hilarious things with this tongue..flipping it around all over the place.  A woman recently told me that her mare did the same thing.  Is this in their breed?  lol [:D

Hi TAO! I don't have a Standardbred, but we need to see pics of those funny faces. [8D]

I have a Standardbred, actually we have two. Mine is a 10 year old Standardbred mare named Treasure, she's dark bay and is 16.2 hands. We got both  of them from the American Standardbred Adoption Program, in Wisconsin. My mom's horse Nick is a STB gelding, and he sometimes does funny faces like that and sticks his tongue out. Treasure never does, so I'm not sure if it's a breed thing or not [;)]

I will try and get one (of course there's never a camera around when I need one [:D]).  For a quick visual though, think "Donkey" from Shrek.  His name is Lucky and he is just too much!

Thanks, LoveMyDogCassidy!  Very cool to hear that you adopted them. [:)]

I've got a Standardbred that will let his tongue hang out the side of his mouth.  Don't know if I can get pictures.  They are all silly horses!  A.S.A.P. is a wonderful program!

Hahahaha....Lucky does the same thing!  Flips and flops that tongue around...lets it hang...too funny.  ASAP? ...is that a Standardbred rescue?

Yes, if you can get some photos, please add them!  Would love to see! [:)]

I've owned several Standards. My father was involved in cart horse racing in California. I hated the industry and would rescue some of the horses that were headed for the "factory". I had 17 acres in northern California so would have a couple around always. Standards are CHARACTERS! They have a ton of personality - they've always been my favorites. I love Arabs too, but the Standards are so majestic and are very playful and fun. The faces are just part of them. I think they try to talk. My favorite was a 15.3 black bay mare named Kiwi. She loved my dogs and I even handled my Setters in field trials off of her. They are a nicely gaited breed and a real pleasure to ride. And it's a blast to get them up and running.

Hi debbie...thanks for sharing!  I love to hear personal stories and experiences with Standardbreds.

I've been working with Lucky for a little over a year.  He's got severe L-sided DSD (due to over use with racing & pulling carts for the Amish) and it has taken me many months to earn his trust and respect.

I didn't see his personality until a few months after working with him...was too busy dodging bites, etc.  Now, however, we have built a very strong bond and his goofy personality just shines SO brightly.  He is also the sighted-companion for his blind stablemate (retired and not up for adoption).  I am in love with all my animal clients but I especially adore Lucky.  He has inspired me to learn more about Standarbreds in general.

I am drawn to Drafts but there may be a Standarbred rescue in my future! [:)]

Yes, ASAP is an adoption program, they have people foster and adopt Standardbreds, some are retired off the track, some are young, and they rescue some too. It's a neat program. That's where we adopted both of our horses.

That's a funny picture! He's so pretty...and very shiny [:)] My mom's horse does that sometimes, and sticks out his tongue, he's such a goofy boy.

That's a good thing you were able to rescue some of the horses, Debbie. I agree, Standardbreds are great horses, but lots of people don't really recognize them except for being harness racing horses, and they are great to ride. I love to gallop my STB, and I do cantering more than trotting because her trot is so fast and bouncy! She doesn't have a slow trot! [:D] She does have an injury that we think was related to the track, since she raced previously. Most of the time she's really good, I just have to make sure not to overdo it with her, like I can't ride her every day of the week or she gets sore. Otherwise, I can do pretty much anything with her.

Carmy'sMom, are in you involved with ASAP? Like I said, we adopted horses from them, but we've never actually been up to the farm. We did meet Susan and some of the others at the Midwest Horse Fair though, and have represented them at the Northern IL Horse Fest. Do you have any horses? [:)]
